This work contains “February 15, 1973 New York performance”. It is a special audience recording at the iconic super famous venue Radio City Music Hall (hereinafter RCMH).

The biggest point of this work is the excellent quality, but first of all, if you do not know the position of the show, it is hard to get an image. Let’s take a look at Bowie’s first world tour overview.

This is the whole story of the legendary tour. Bowie, who completed the masterpiece “Aladdin Sane” in early 1973, resumed the tour by significantly increasing the number of members from the previous 5-member group to 9-member group. The performance in New York of this work was the second performance of RCMH 2 days at the beginning.

This work containing such a show has a really beautiful and neat sound. Although it is not a direct feeling that is mistaken for a sound board, the performance and singing voice reach straight in the clear atmosphere. The air is so transparent that the details are not hidden and the sound is beautifully colored. Furthermore, the sense of stability is also excellent. Speaking of recordings in the early 70’s, there is no help for the sound that is distorted due to battery conditions and deterioration over time. However, such a disorder is not felt in this work, and it is really fresh and beautiful with the elegant sound of the traditional venue RCMH.

The total feeling is also a beautiful sound, but the strange one is Mick Ronson’s guitar. Only his sound has a very thick core and a strangely direct feeling. It tears through the soft and beautiful world without hesitation and barks vigorously. Another strange thing is that the audience noise is extremely low. The cheers and screams that boil between the songs are vivid, but once the performance starts, it stops and the beautiful melody softly wraps around RCMH. While RCMH as a whole fell in love with Jiggy’s presence itself, Mick’s powerful guitar sound brought it back to reality. It’s a live album with such a mood.

The show drawn with that sound is also wonderful. First of all, it’s long. Speaking of this “North America # 2”, masterpieces such as “DETROIT 1973 1ST NIGHT (Wardour-229)” and “THE ALL AMERICAN BOWIE (Wardour-274)” have gained popularity, but unfortunately both are less than 70 minutes. .. On the other hand, this work is a full-scale live album that exceeds 90 minutes. For that reason, there are many songs recorded, and there are many famous songs that could not be heard in both works. Aladdin Sane’s numbers have already been played in large numbers, especially around “Aladdin Sane”, “Panic In Detroit”, “Time” and “Watch That Man”, which have only been played 2-3 times in public. It is a very early performance.

Of course, not only that, but also the motivation to fill the entire show is hot. As mentioned above, he made his American debut in 1972, but this RCMH performance is a re-debut with nine members. It’s a lively show that shows off a gorgeous ensemble with a horn section and a thick chorus, proving a new, scaled-up appeal.

本作に収められているのは「1973年２月15日ニューヨーク公演」。象徴的な超有名会場ラジオシティ・ミュージックホール（以後、RCMH）での特級オーディエンス録音です。

本作最大のポイントは素晴らしいクオリティにありますが、まずはショウのポジションが分からないとイメージも沸きにくい。ボウイ初のワールドツアー全体像の中で確認してみましょう。

これが伝説ツアーの全容。1973年初頭に名作『アラジン・セイン』を完成させたボウイは、それまでの５人組から９人編成へ大幅に増員させてツアーを再開。本作のニューヨーク公演はその冒頭であるRCMH２日間の２公演目にあたるコンサートでした。

そんなショウを収めた本作は、実に見目麗しい端正サウンド。サウンドボードと間違えるようなダイレクト感ではないものの、クリアな空気感の中を演奏と歌声が真っ直ぐに届く。その空気感があまりにも透き通っているためにディテールが隠されず、鳴りを美しく彩っている。さらに安定感も絶品。70年代初期の録音と言えば、電池事情や経年劣化等でヨレたサウンドでも仕方がない。ところが、本作にはそうした乱れが感じられず、伝統会場RCMHの気品ある音響も相まって実に瑞々しく美しいのです。

トータル感も美しいサウンドではありますが、その中で異様なのはミック・ロンソンのギター。彼のサウンドだけはなぜが極太な芯が鋭く、妙にダイレクト感たっぷり。柔らかく美しい世界を遠慮会釈なく切り裂き、豪快に吠えるのです。もう１つ不思議なのは、オーディエンス・ノイズがやけに少ない事。曲間に沸き上がる喝采や悲鳴のような声援は生々しいものの、一度演奏が始まるとそれがピタッと止まり、美しいメロディが柔らかくRCMHを包み込む。ジギーの存在感そのものにRCMH全体が惚れ惚れとしつつ、ミックの強力なギターサウンドが力づくで現実に引き戻す。そんなムードのライヴアルバムなのです。

そのサウンドで描かれるショウがまた素晴らしい。まず、何と言っても長い。この「北米#2」と言えば『DETROIT 1973 1ST NIGHT（Wardour-229）』や『THE ALL AMERICAN BOWIE（Wardour-274）』といった名作が人気を博してきましたが、残念ながらどちらも70分弱。それに対し、本作は90分を超えるフル・スケールのライヴアルバム。それだけに収録曲も多く、両作では聴けなかった名曲も盛りだくさん。早くも『アラジン・セイン』のナンバーが大量に演奏されており、特に「Aladdin Sane」「Panic In Detroit」「Time」「Watch That Man」辺りは、まだ２-３回しか人前で演奏していないという極初期のパフォーマンスなのです。

もちろん、それだけでなくショウ全体に漲る意欲も熱い。上記したように1972年中にアメリカ・デビューは果たしていたわけですが、このRCMH公演は言わば９人編成による再デビュー。ホーン・セクションやぶ厚いコーラスも従えたゴージャスなアンサンブルを見せつけ、スケールアップした新しい魅力を証明せんとする熱気溢れるショウなのです。

名作『アラジン・セイン』も生み出し、更なる飛躍を目指して再開したツアーのキックオフ。その現場に立って伝説のショウを体験できる２枚組です。よりスペクタクルに、よりドラマティックに進化したジギー・ワールドがたっぷりと広がりつつ、力強いギターにも蹂躙されるライヴアルバムの大傑作。また一歩、明らかになったジギーの歩み。どうぞ、存分にご堪能ください。
