ジギー時代にサンタモニカのシビック・オーディトリアムを始めとしてアメリカでシアター・クラスの会場を回っていたボウイですが、その地道なツアー活動だけでなく、テレビで「THE 1980 FLOOR SHOW」が放送された際のインパクトも手伝ってアメリカでの人気が急上昇。そこへアルバムのヒットも重なり、1974年の「DIAMOND DOGS」ツアーで一気にアメリカのアリーナを使った公演が増えたのです。6月から始まったツアーはさっそくデトロイトのコボ・アリーナやメンフィスのミッドサウス・コロシアムなどで行われ、ボウイがアメリカでも一流アーティストの仲間入りを果たしたことを証明する形となりました。
しかし7月に入ると一旦シアター・クラスの会場に戻り、会場が小さくなった代わりに公演数が増えます。このスケジュールの最中に収録されたのがオフィシャルのライブアルバム「DAVID LIVE」。
ここまでのツアーの道のりは順調とは程遠く、中でもライブアルバム収録の前にはバックバンドがボウイやマネージメントに対してギャラの昇給を求める、何よりボウイ以下、関係者がことごとくコカインに浸るに日々の中で進んでいきました。そして当時としては非常に画期的だった「DIAMOND DOGS」セットにはトラブルが頻発、挙句の果てに7月2日のタンパではセットを輸送する運転手が蜂に刺されて会場に到着できず、何と「DIAMOND DOGS」セットなしで決行された（この模様はUXBRIDGEの「TAMPA 1974」で聞けます）日まであったという。

こうして波乱万丈を絵に描いたようなツアーのファースト・レグだった訳ですが、それでも上昇し続けるアメリカでの人気を証明するように千秋楽はマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンの二夜連続公演で締めくくられることになります。MSGのような大会場ともなれば音源が豊富に存在していそうなものですが、意外にもボウイ初のMSG公演は二日目の7月20日しかオーディエンス録音が発掘されていません。おまけにこの音源の音質が非常に悪い。まず音質そのものがモコモコにこもっていた上、アール・スリックのギターの音がバカでかいという状態。「DIAMOND DOGS」ツアーにおいても特に重要な一日となった日がよりによって音の悪い音源しか残されていなかっただなんて。
ところがこの5月、突如としてMSG二日目の別音源がネット上に現れたのです。この貴重な発掘を公開してくれたのは、音源マニア界でおなじみKrw_co。彼が公開してくれたというだけでも一定のクオリティが保証されたようなものですが、今回登場した新音源はモノラルの正にビンテージ・オーディエンスならではの聞きやすさを兼ね備えている。
不自然に音が近かった既発音源と比べて今回は距離感のある音像なのですが、それでもボウイの歌声を始めとした演奏全体を非常に聞きやすい状態で捉えてくれている。またMSGのようなアリーナでの録音ながら、周囲で騒ぐ観客がいないのはポイントが高い。そして既存音源とは比べ物にならないほどに聞きやすく、テープの鮮度も素晴らしい。今回の限定プレスCDリリースに当たっては低いレベルながらジリジリと入るノイズを緩和、さらに高いピッチをアジャストして貴重な新発掘をより聞きやすくさせています。

この日が結果的にファースト・レグのバンドにとっても最終日となりました。このレグはトニー・ニューマンとハービー・フラワーズというブリティッシュ・ロックの職人コンビがリズム隊だったことで「DIAMOND DOGS」ツアーの中ではもっともロック色の強いサウンドだった時期。9月以降はソウル色がどんどん強まっていくだけに、なおさらロック寄りのサウンドがこの時期だけの魅力というもの。
そもそも「DIAMOND DOGS」セットはアリーナでの展開を想定して作られたセットですし、それがMSGで映えたことは容易に想像できるというもの。それ故に話題を呼んだツアーでもあり、この日は多くのセレブも駆け付け、当時ボウイの妻だったアンジーは接待に努めたと言われています。
こうして波乱万丈のファースト・レグが何とか成功裏に終えられるということもあり、ボウイはMSGという舞台に相応しい、自信に満ち溢れた熱唱の連続。遂にMSGにまで（しかも二日連続）上り詰めた…という達成感がそうさせるのでしょう。「DAVID LIVE」で聞かれたように、この時期のボウイは独特の枯れた声がむしろ魅力となっているのですが、いつも以上に伸びやかな歌っぷり、なおかついつも以上に観客に語り掛けているところからも彼の喜びが伝わってくるかのよう。
もちろんバンドもファースト・レグの最終日ということから「DAVID LIVE」以上に自由な演奏を聞かせていて、特にデビッド・サンボーンは奔放なブロウを随所で響かせている。そして「Time」ではマイク・ガーソンがいつもとまったく違うピアノのインプロビゼーションを盛り込んでいるのがまた最終日らしいところ。このように「DIAMOND DOGS」ツアーファースト・レグの中でも重要な一日であったにもかかわらず、今まで音の悪い音源しか存在せず、それ故にアイテムのリリースが見込めなかった74年のMSG。ようやくマニアも納得の高音質オーディエンス録音が発掘されました。伝説の「DIAMOND DOGS」ツアーファースト・レグを締めくくるに相応しい名演です！
