On June 15, 2002, at the Sony Studio in New York, live recording for television broadcasting in the fans was done. 2001年はニューヨークの同時多発テロがあった年として記憶される。あれ以前と以後で世界が変わってしまい、戦争が国家間のものからテロ組織にまで概念が拡大された歴史的な事件であった。終わりなき日常はある日を境に一変する。その事を改めて知らしめたショッキングな出来事として人々の記憶に刻まれていることだろう。我々日本人は同じ体験を東日本大震災でも経験している。天災と人為的なテロとの違いはあるが、いずれも明日の見えない時代を生きていると人類は覚醒させられた出来事であった。ボウイのアルバム『HEATHEN』は、このような未来不透明な時代をテーマに作られた作品である。タイトルは『異教徒』を意味する。過去を現代の解釈で提示する意図を持って取り組んだ『TOY』の制作が頓挫し、過去にも未来にも閉塞した意識がボウイの中に充満していた。そのような状況下でアルバム『HEATHEN』は制作されたのである。

ボウイはこの『HEATHEN』に強い思い入れがあったのであろう、プロモーションにかなり力を入れており、数多くのイベントやテレビ出演などを積極的に行なった。リリース直後には、アルバム『LOW』と『HEATHEN』を対比すべく、それぞれのアルバムの全曲演奏するライブまで行なっている（heldenレーベル『LIVE LOW』）。本作もそのようなプロモーションの一環で行なわれたライブのひとつである。

2002年6月15日ニューヨークのソニースタジオで、ファンを入れた中でのテレビ放送のためのライブ収録が行なわれた。新作のプロモーションのためでありながら、番組のタイトル通り、セットリストはファンからのリクエストに応えて、その曲を演奏するという企画で、新曲を交えつつ、過去のボウイ・ベストという選曲になっているのが面白いところである。

ライブは「FAME」で開幕する。これだけはリクエストではなく当初からの予定されていた曲だったようだ。バックに「BOWIE」と電飾が施されたステージで、ベルベットのジャケットを着用したボウイが、ヘッドフォン型のイヤーモニターをつけて登場する。奇抜なファッションなり髪型、メイクなど、その時々でイメージを作るボウイでありながら、この時は実にナチュラルな姿でステージに立っており、スマートな姿がもうたまらなくカッコいい。笑顔を浮かべ、時に客席にウインクを投げかけ、バンドメンバーに手振りで指示を出し、素晴らしいパフォーマンスを見せてくれている。何よりボウイの気分が非常に良く、ステージを楽しんでいるのが如実に伝わってくる。盛り上がる客席に対し、終始笑顔を絶やさず、あの独特のニヤケ顔を見る事ができる。身振り手振りの一挙手一投足がボウイを感じさせてくれる。

ステージは、全米のファンとステージ上のボウイが電話で会話をしながら、リクエストを伝え、ボウイがそれに応えるという趣向で進行する。それぞれのリクエストの前に、ボウイ本人と会話するという事で興奮気味に自分とボウイとの想い出を語っているのが微笑ましいではないか。事前の打ち合わせなく選曲は即興で決められているらしく、会話を終えた後に楽譜をパラパラとめくりながら準備をしているのがわかる。「Changes」をリクエストしたミネアポリス在住のマイケルさん。自分の人生を音楽を通して潤してくれたボウイにありがとうと言いたい、このように伝えられるとボウイは満面の笑みを浮かべている。マサチューセッツ州在住のベティさん。20年来のファンというベティさんのリクエストは「China Girl」。その他、数十年前にジギースターダストのツアーを見たというファン、小さな息子を電話口に出す親子二代に渡る熱心なファンなど、ステージ、客席、そして電話の向こう側と、様々なファンと一体となったステージは実に素晴らしい。

本作は、この2002年6月15日ニューヨークで行なわれた「LIVE BY REQUEST」をプロショットとサウンドボードで完全収録している。のみならず放送ではカットされた2曲「I’ve Been Waiting For You」「Cactus」もプロショットとサウンドボードで収録したまさに完全版である。この2年後にボウイは活動を停止してしまうが、その予兆など一切感じさせないエネルギッシュで圧倒的なパフォーマンスである。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。
