LP “SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR”. It is a masterpiece of the famous board that told David Bowie’s 1978 “Isolar II” American Leg first pattern. The sound source that captured the stage at the LA Forum on April 4th, the third day of the tour, with the highest sound quality is the ultimate high sound quality that makes you want to call this “ Sound Board ”, high quality that will not fade in 2019 It was an audience album. Because of the extraordinary quality and the LA Forum, the speculation of “Mic Millard recordings” flew in the 2000s. However, it was actually a release from a person (= Ken Douglas) who continued to work under the names of labels such as TMOQ and TAKRL, and the sound source was also obtained by him independently. In the first place, the mirrored sound source was released as a bootleg in the 1980s, after that “LISTEN TO THIS EDDIE” was released.
The original tape source is often excavated later for such sound sources related to Ken Douglas, but this “ SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR ” is always found alongside Led Zeppelin’s “ GOING TO CALIFORNIA ” I have arrived without it. So, more than 10 years ago, when I transferred this masterpiece mint condition LP carefully and turned it into a CD, it was very popular that “everybody wants to listen to a CD at last”. I will. Later, a version of the tape source on the net appeared on the net, but nothing happened, it was just equalizing the LP and correcting the pitch. In addition, the poorness of the original sound has dropped due to excessive equalization.

Is the vintage LP “SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR” that will not fade at all in the 21st century indefinitely immortal? As I expected, a shocking excavation in November made mania all over the world say. The audience recording tape of April 4th by genuine Mike Millard appeared on the net. This time, the best version of his masterpiece “LISTEN TO THIS EDDIE” will be released, but strangely his unknown masterpiece recording will be released at the same time!
The “SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR” source (hereinafter referred to as “LP source”) is an on balance that makes the sound image strange, and if it was 1978, it would have been strange to be misunderstood as AM radio broadcasting. On the other hand, there was a part that memorized the sparseness of the realism that can only be recorded by an audience.
However, as expected, mirrored recording. The reality of the presence that sucked in the air of the day that LP source was not enough is outstanding. As a bonus, it was also an audience recording that was done at the LA Forum in less than a year since “Eddie”, and the texture is exactly the same. Even if you can enjoy Bowie’s 78-year forum with that feeling of the eternal masterpiece “Eddie”, it will have a big impact on mania. The LP source that conveys the outline of the performance at a level imitating the sound board was really wonderful sound quality, but it is a surprising new audience.
And what I’m glad to say is that it was the first complete recording on April 4th, completely recorded from the opening “Warszawa” that was not recorded in the LP source! If it’s the “Isolar II” tour recording board, then we need to start. This was the biggest drawback of LP sources. In addition, member introduction that was not recorded in LP, the beginning of “Rebel Rebel” that was slightly lacking was also recorded this time. As expected, good work in Millard and Bowie.

“SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR” was treated as a masterpiece so far, but the official “STAGE” that was originally released was the same as “Isolar II” recorded at the end of the American leg, but far from the actual stage Another point is that LPs were recorded according to the actual stage while being edited and released. Now, “STAGE” has been remixed and a new version has been released along with the actual concert, but the editing arranged in the order of the recorded songs at that time was uncomfortable.
Even more importantly, the board was a great catcher of the free and “offensive” staging of the early “Isolar II” tour. If there is a close sense of reality and closeness of the sound image only by the mirrored sound source, this is already a gold bar to the demon.
Originally, the “Isolar II” tour had a very easy-to-understand composition, with the first half being Berlin music and the second half being Ziggy music, but the first half of the new song, including the instrumental music, was played together. It was a big hit “Fame” that ended it. However, “Fame” moved from the European leg to the front of Lass in the first half, which lowered the hurdle of “continuing a new song” a little.
What is even more noteworthy is that at this point, the cover song “Alabama Song” representing 78 was not yet added to the repertoire, but “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” was being played instead. This song, which was sung as if it disappeared in the nightly finale in 1974, is now sung powerfully by Bowie who escaped from the cocaine vortex. It is also attractive that you can enjoy the enthusiasm of the song here with the highest sound quality that you can only get from Millard. Conversely, at this point, the Ziggy color of the second half of the set became too strong (because it was played to “Star” which was not picked up in real time anyway), and the official “STAGES” recorded live The repertoire of convincing that the set list has dropped since then.
And in the LP source, it is interesting to hear that the Berlin corner in the first half, which was reflected as if the audience was listening to a squirrel, listened to the mirrored sound source with a great sense of reality, and it was even more exciting. But what does this mean if it changes? Naturally LP sources will be distributed as gifts, so both will be very high level audience albums, but you will be able to hear and compare the feel of different sounds. It is also a good idea to compare the start and finish of the American leg with the already-introduced “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1978 FINAL NIGHT”. The limited press CD that contains such a shocking mirrored new excavation audience recording is a Christmas present for Bowie enthusiasts around the world!

LP「SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR」。それはデヴィッド・ボウイの1978年”Isolar II” アメリカン・レグ最初期の模様を伝えてくれた名盤中の名盤。ツアー開始三日めである4月4のLAフォーラムでのステージを極上の音質で捉えた音源は「これぞサウンドボード」と呼びたくなるような究極の高音質、2019年の今なお色褪せないハイクオリティ・オーディエンス・アルバムでした。あまりに別格のクオリティかつLAフォーラムでのゆえ、2000年代に入ると「マイク・ミラードによる録音か？」という推測が飛んだほど。ところが実際にはTMOQやTAKRLといったレーベルの名の下で活動を続けていた人物（＝ケン・ダグラス）からのリリースであり、音源も彼が独自に入手したものだったのです。そもそもミラードの音源がブートレグとしてリリースされるのは1980年代に入って、かの「LISTEN TO THIS EDDIE」がリリースされてからのこと。
そんなケン・ダグラス絡みの音源は後に元のテープが発掘される場合が多いのですが、この「SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR」はレッド・ツェッペリンの「GOING TO CALIFORNIA」と並んで元のテープソースがどうしても見つからないまま今に至ってしまいました。そこで今から10年以上前、この名盤のミント・コンディションLPを丁寧にトランスファーしてCD化してみせたところ、「誰もがCDで聞きたかった名盤が遂に」と大好評を博してしまいます。その後ネット上には本盤のテープソースを騙ったバージョンが現れもしましたが何のことはない、LPをイコライズしてピッチを正したというだけに過ぎなかったのです。おまけにイコライズ過剰のせいで元の音の鮮度が落ちてしまったというお粗末さ。

こうして21世紀に入っても価値がまったく色褪せないビンテージLP「SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR」は永遠に不滅なのか？思っていたところ、この11月に衝撃的な発掘が世界中のマニアをアッと言わせました。何と正真正銘マイク・ミラードによる4月4日のオーディエンス録音テープがネット上に現れたのです。今回は彼の最高傑作「LISTEN TO THIS EDDIE」のベスト・バージョンがリリースされますが、奇しくも彼の知られざる傑作録音が同時にリリースされるだなんて！
「SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR」ソース（以下「LPソース」と称します）は音像が異様な程オンなバランスであり、1978年当時であればAMラジオ放送か何かと誤解されてもおかしくないほどでした。その反面、オーディエンス録音らしかぬ臨場感の希薄さを覚える箇所があったのです。
ところが、さすがはミラード録音。LPソースで足りなかった当日の空気をたっぷりと吸い込んだ臨場感のリアリティは抜群。おまけに「エディー」から一年にも満たない時期で同じくLAフォーラムで敢行してくれたオーディエンス録音ということもあり、質感などもそっくり。永遠の名作「エディー」の、あの感じでボウイの78年フォーラムが楽しめるというだけでもマニアに大きな衝撃を与えることでしょう。演奏の輪郭をサウンドボードまがいなレベルで伝えてくれたLPソースは本当に素晴らしい音質でしたが、それに比肩しうる驚異のニュー・オーディエンス。
そして何と言っても嬉しいのが、LPソースで未収録だったオープニングの「Warszawa」からばっちり収録された、初の4月4日完全収録音源であるということ！”Isolar II”ツアー収録盤であれば、それから始まらないとお話にならない。これこそLPソースにおける最大の欠点でした。さらにLPで未収録だったメンバー紹介、わずかに欠けていた「Rebel Rebel」の出だしも今回はもれなく収録。さすがはミラード、ボウイでもいい仕事してくれます。

「SLAUGHTER IN THE AIR」がこれほどまでに名盤扱いされたのには、当初リリースされたオフィシャル「STAGE」が同じ”Isolar II”アメリカ・レグ終盤での収録ながら、実際のステージとはかけ離れた編集が施されてリリースされてしまったのに対し、LPは実際のステージ通りに収録していたという点も挙げられます。今でこそ「STAGE」はリミックスされた上に実際のコンサートに沿ったニュー・バージョンがリリースされていますが、当時の録音された楽曲順に並ばれた編集は何とも違和感がありました。
それ以上に重要だったのは、同盤が”Isolar II”ツアー序盤の自由かつ“攻め”なステージングを見事に捉えてくれていたということも大きい。そこへミラード音源ならではのきめ細やかな臨場感と音像の近さが加われば、これはもう鬼に金棒。
もともと”Isolar II”ツアーは前半がベルリン楽曲、後半がジギー楽曲という非常に解りやすい構成あった反面、前半でインストも含む当時の新曲がまとめて演奏されるという、これぞ“攻め”構成となっており、それを締めくくるのが大ヒット「Fame」でした。ところが、この後のヨーロピアン・レグから「Fame」が前半のラス前へと移り、これによって「新曲立て続け」というハードルが少し低くなったのでした。
それ以上に特筆すべきは、この時点では78年を代表するカバー曲「Alabama Song」がまだレパートリーに加えられておらず、代わりに「Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide」が演奏されていたのです。1974年には毎晩のフィナーレとして、まるで消え入るかのように歌われていたこの曲が、コカインの渦から抜け出したボウイによって、今度は力強く歌われている。ここでの熱唱ぶりをミラードならではの最高音質で楽しめるというのも魅力的。逆にいうと、この時点でセット後半のジギー色が強くなりすぎてしまったきらいがあり（何しろリアルタイムでは取り上げられなかった「Star」まで演奏されているのだから）、オフィシャル「STAGES」収録ライブの時点でからセットリスト落ちしてしまったのも納得のレパートリーかと。
そしてLPソースでは、まるでオーディエンスが固唾を飲んで聞き入っているかのように映った前半のベルリン・コーナーも臨場感に長けたミラード音源で聞くと、もっと盛り上がっていたことが分かって面白い。ところ変われば品変わる…とはこのことか。LPソースは当然ギフトとして配布いたしますので、どちらも極めてハイレベルなオーディエンス・アルバムでありながら、まるで違う音の感触を聞き比べていただけるでしょう。また、既にご紹介済みの名盤「MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1978 FINAL NIGHT」でアメリカン・レグのスタートとフィニッシュを聞き比べるのもイイ。そんな衝撃のミラード新発掘オーディエンス録音を封じ込めた限定プレスCDは世界中のボウイ・マニアにとってのクリスマス・プレゼント！
