When Bowie died, the German government officially commented. “Goodbye, David Bowie. You are our hero. Thank you for helping the wall collapse.” This comment refers to David Bowie’s concert on June 6, 1987, in the square in front of the Berlin Wall. The concert in Berlin as part of the Glass Spider Tour dared to set up a stage in a square near the Berlin Wall instead of the existing venue, with speakers directed to the East Berlin side beyond the wall. A symbolic place of the Cold War, people on both the east and west were united through Bowie.
“Heroes”, one of Bowie’s representative songs, is a masterpiece inspired by the appearance of lovers who meet across the Berlin Wall. This concert seemed to project the people of East and West to their lovers and appeal for East-West reconciliation.
In East Germany at that time, it was forbidden to hold meetings without prior permission, and while the eyes of Stasi (East Germany’s Ministry of National Security) were shining, 5,000 people gathered on the east side of the Berlin Wall and many arrests were made. rice field. 当時の東ドイツでは事前の許可なく集会を行なう事は禁止されており、シュタージ（東ドイツ国家保安省）の監視の目が光る中、ベルリンの壁の東側では5000人の聴衆が集まり多くの逮捕者が出た。それでも東ベルリンの若者たちは漏れ聞こえるボウイのコンサートに熱狂したのである。西側の芸術が禁止されていた冷戦下の社会主義陣営において、「それはまるで禁断の果実を味わっているかのようだった。このコンサートは僕たちの状況を変えるために起きているのだと、みんな直感的にわかっていた」。
本作はベルリンの壁崩壊のひとつのきっかけとなった、1987年6月6日西ベルリン公演をサウンドボードで完全収録している。ボーナストラックとして当日のサウンドチェック、そして当日のニュースレポート音源も収録されている。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。
