This is David Bowie from 2003/2004. The tour was organized until July 2004, but before it was completed, I fell ill and never went on tour again. The Denver performance of this work was also in 2004, but in the middle of the tour there are still no signs of illness. It was the 7th performance of “North America # 1b”.
This work recorded at such a show is the finest DAT master discovered in recent years. After all, the sound quality was so good that even among overseas collectors, various theories mixed with wishful thinking such as “Is it really an audience?” “Isn’t it different from the official board or broadcast sound board?” “Is it actually a matrix?” There is. As a matter of fact, the tone of the sound feels like an audience, so I feel like it’s a little too shabby, but I also understand the feeling that the tension rises unintentionally. The crystal clear and clear air is shining, and even if you listen with headphones, you can’t feel the sound of the hall. Of course, the details are as vivid as a laser beam, and all the instruments are beautifully separated up to each note. Even if you listen to it microscopically (other than the tone of the core and the cheers between the songs), you can’t find the audience. Moreover, this work brushes up such an original sound. It is the highest peak update board that pursues the maximum potential as a musical work by balancing ease of listening and vividness while keeping a natural feel.
And it is the show itself that raises the tension of collectors more than the super clear sound. As mentioned above, I have reported “A REALITY Tour” on the press board, but this work has many rare songs, and I listened to it a lot. Is the song that has been revived for the first time in 7 years and is the 5th time on this tour. Similarly, “Blue Jean” for the first time in eight years is also a valuable take for the second tour. And the most rare thing is the new song “She’ll Drive the Big Car” from “REALITY”. Of course, it is a limited song for “A REALITY Tour”, but it is a very rare song that is sung only about 10 times + α in a limited venue. これが2003年／2004年のデヴィッド・ボウイ。ツアーは2004年７月まで組まれていましたが、その完遂を前に病魔に倒れ、二度とツアーに出る事はありませんでした。本作のデンバー公演もそんな2004年ではありますが、まだまだ病の兆候も見えないツアー中盤。「北米#1b」の７公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、近年になって発掘された極上のDATマスター。何しろ、あまりの音の良さに海外コレクター間でも「本当にオーディエンス？」「公式盤や放送サウンドボードと変わらないじゃないか」「実際マトリクスさせてるんじゃ？」と希望的観測の混じった諸説が吹き出しているのです。実のところ、鳴りの音色にオーディエンスらしさが感じられるのでちょっとハシャギすぎな気もするのですが、思わずテンションが上がってしまう気持ちも分かる。クリスタル・クリアに透き通った空気感は輝くほどで、ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませてもホール鳴りを感じ取れないタイト感も絶大。もちろん、ディテールもレーザー光線のようにビビッドで、すべての楽器が１音１音に至るまで綺麗にセパレート。それこそ顕微鏡的に聴き込んでも（芯の音色と曲間の喝采以外に）オーディエンスらしさが見当たらないのです。しかも、本作はそんな原音をブラッシュアップ。ナチュラルな感触をキープしつつ、聴きやすさと鮮やかさの両立を計って音楽作品としての可能性を最大限に追究した最高峰更新盤なのです。
そして、その超クリア・サウンド以上にコレクター達のテンションを上げてしまうのがショウそのもの。前述のようにこれまでもプレス盤で“A REALITY Tour”をレポートしてきましたが、本作はその中でもレア曲が多く、聴き応えたっぷり。ここでは最も有名な公式盤『A REALITY TOUR』を基準にしてセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。最新作と『ジギー・スターダスト』を２本柱としながらキャリアを幅広く網羅するスタイルは“A REALITY Tour”の正道ですが、そこに散りばめられたレア曲がポイント。「Suffragette City」はわりと多く演奏されていたのでそうでもありませんが、「White Light/White Heat」は公式作『A REALITY TOUR』や他国篇のプレス・タイトルでは聴けませんし、「Panic in Detroit」は７年ぶりに復活した曲でこのツアーでも５回目。同じように８年ぶりの「Blue Jean」もツアー２回目という貴重テイクなのです。そして、レア度で極めつけなのが『REALITY』の新曲「She’ll Drive the Big Car」。当然ながら“A REALITY Tour”限定曲なわけですが、限られた会場で10回＋α程度しか歌われていないという激レア曲。ボウイの全キャリアでも屈指の貴重曲をサウンドボード級の超クリア・サウンドで楽しめてしまうのです。
