BBCでのライヴということからも想像できるように、このライヴはオフィシャルでも録音され、BBC録音をまとめたオフィシャル盤『BOWIE AT THE BEEB』にも使用されました。ただし、その公式盤はショウの不完全版をCD１枚に収録。中盤の「The London Boys」「I Dig Everything」、さらには終盤の「Ziggy Stardust」「Jean Genie」「All The Young Dudes」「Starman」「Heroes」が大胆にカットされていたのです。本作は、そういった名曲群も網羅し、ショウの完全形が聴けるオーディエンス・アルバムなのです。
オーディエンス録音とは言え、そこは英国の巨匠。そんじょそこらの客席録音とはサウンドが違います。もちろん、距離感ゼロのライン・サウンドというわけにはいきませんが、楽音は実にクリアで“BBCラジオ・シアター”の密室感もたっぷり。広大な残響にボケる心配もなく、生々しい観客の反応の上に堂々とボウイの歌声が君臨するサウンドなのです。
ただし、好事魔多し。そのボウイの歌声が絶好調とは言えない。ハッキリと不調の伝わるクリア・サウンドがいっそ恨めしくもなるのですが、音質うんぬんのレベルを超えてしまうのがショウ終盤。当然、盛り上がるべき「Ziggy Stardust」「All The Young Dudes」では声が出ないために途中で止めてやり直したり、「Jean Genie」ではそもそも歌わずに終えてしまったり。こうしたパートは公式盤ではカットされているのですが、それも致し方なかったと分かってしまうのです。『GLASTONSTONBURY FESTIVAL 2000』からわずか２日後だと言うのに、まったく別人のようです。

英国の巨匠が腕によりをかけて録音した逸品ながら、苦しむボウイの姿をクリア・サウンドで露わにしてしまうライヴ・アルバム。現場の観客は、苦闘するボウイを励まし、彼の熱意に打たれたような暖かい喝采を贈っていますが、その気持ちと同化してしまうドキュメント・アルバムでもあります。辛いからこそ踏ん張るボウイがいて、それを母国の暖かいファンが囲む一夜。決して名演・名盤とは言えませんが、だからこそじんわりと胸が熱くなるのです。ギリギリでも決してあきらめないボウイに逢える１本。どうぞ、心からの声援を彼に贈ってください。
