今週のギフトアイテムには、デレク＆ザ・ドミノスのライブ盤「IN CONCERT」と同じく、かつてモービル・フィデリティ・サウンド・ラボから「Ultradisc Ⅱ」のブランド名でリリースされていた24KゴールドCDの名盤シリーズより、ギタリスト‘エリック・クラプトン’の名を一躍世界的に広めた1967年のリリース作品、クリームのセカンド・アルバム「DISRAELI GEARS」をラインナップしました！80年代末期、CDにおける高音質競争の先鞭をつけ、音楽マニア間にブームを巻き起こしたゴールドCDがなぜ高く評価されるに至ったかのテクニカルな所以は、通常CDに使用されているアルミニウム蒸着膜に代わり、経年で腐食し難く、反射率の高さから正確な信号読み取りを実現する24金蒸着膜を使用したことによる高音質だったわけですが、本作はクリーム＝クラプトンの出世作であり、クリームの代表作の一つであるゆえに最高のサウンド実現を目指して製作されたものでした。本CDは、これまでギフトアイテムでご紹介してきた「Layla　And Other Assorted Love Songs」や「461 Ocean Boulevard」に先立ち、1992年にリリースされました。他のゴールドCD同様、当時のポリグラム・レコード（現在のユニバーサル）からアメリカ盤の2トラック・オリジナルマスターテープを借り受けて限定生産されたものですが、サウンド的には、通常CDが高音域・低音域を強調し、中音域が貧弱なため、よく言われる「ドンシャリ」的な印象になっていたのに対し、本ゴールドCDは他のゴールドCD同様、すべての音域がバランス良く調和している印象となっています。特に初めて世に出た「コンパクトディスク」と言うメディアのサウンドは、高音部が尖っていて、耳に刺さるように響いたために、かつては「クリアだ」と誤解されたものです。それに比べ、本ゴールドCDでは楽器一つ一つ、ボーカルの繊細な響きそのもののクリアネスが際立っています。つまりこれが本来のアナログマスターを忠実に再現した結果だったというわけです。このアルバムは、クラプトンファンなら、あるいはブリティッシュロックファン、さらにはこれからクラプトンを聴こうという方なら避けては通れない、文字どおりの代表作に挙げられます。なぜなら当時のブリティッシュロック界の実力派ミュージシャン三人が結集して結成したバンドであったこと、その中でクラプトンはギタープレイでの革新性を示した上に、ボーカル面でも新境地を開拓した作品であったこと、中でもSunshine Of Your Loveでのギターソロとサウンドが世界中のリスナーに衝撃を与えたプレイであったこと、などが挙げられます。本作はギター、ベース、ドラムという、ロックバンドの最少編成によるサウンドだったため、オリジナルアナログマスターのサウンドに忠実に「磨き上げる」甲斐があるアルバムだったと言えます。そのため本作は以降もCD、LPの両方において、クラプトンのカタログにおける高音質化競争の中心を成す作品に位置づけられてきました。名エンジニア、トム・ダウドの録音により捉えられた1967年というサイケデリックな時代の空気感を伝えるのは楽音の生々しさと静寂部分の「無音のクリアさ」な訳ですが、本ゴールドCDではそのあたりのメリハリを十分に味わっていただけると思います。本盤を聴くと、初回盤通常CDはもう聴けないでしょう。しかも98年にクラプトンのカタログが一挙リマスターされた際にこの作品は当時のステレオ・ミックスとモノラル・ミックスの両方が収録されましたが、本盤では既に両ミックス・バージョンを収めていたという先見性も兼ね備えていました。言わば、文句のつけようのない完成度だったわけです。一方、本盤で使用されたマスターも、元々は1967年に米アトコ・レコードが本作を製作した際に使用したオリジナルUS盤のマスターテープだったわけですが、これまでに申しましたとおり、ユニバーサル社で2008年に起こった大火事により、ほとんどのアーティストのアメリカ盤オリジナルマスターテープが焼失してしまい、この「DISRAELI GEARS」のアメリカ盤アナログマスターテープも焼失しましたので、もはや本盤以上の高音質でUSマスターをリマスターすることは不可能な状況になっています。そう考えますと、本盤のサウンドは一度は味わってみられてもいいのではないかと思います。現在の中古市場では高額のプレミア価格で取引されている本作のゴールドCDを、是非この機会に体験してみてください。
