After the release of “THE DRUMS ARE BACK” by Cozy Powell, the Heidelberg performance known as a classic from the German tour as “COZY POWELL’S HAMMER” jointly performed with Tony Martin and Neil Murray has been newly excavated. It is the first complete recording release with the master audience recording as the source!
This Heidelberg performance has been released as “STARGAZER” on the Langley label in the past, and an upgraded version appeared as “RAISE THE HAMMER” (Shades) of the two performance coupling last year, and it has been popular as a big classic show for a long time. It was. But this time, the master, brought through a more reliable route than the taper, “I actually saw this show and recorded it on site,” was clearly credited with a date of “November 19th.” .. When collated with various already-pronounced sources, it turned out that the performance recorded in this master was certainly the same as “STARGAZER” although the source was different, and by this, “November 15” from before. The Heidelberg performance, which had both theories of “November 19th” and “November 19th”, was confirmed to be “November 19th, the third performance of the tour”.
The source known as “STARGAZER” mentioned above has the opening and song spacing cut off to fit the show on a single CD, which is a problem when considering the nature of audience recording as “recording facts”. Was the source that remained. On the other hand, this newly discovered sound source does not have such artificial editing between songs, and it captures the appearance of the show as it is, from the opening intro “Mars” to the encore “Since You Been Gone”. (Although “If There Is A Heaven” was also played on that day, it became clear that it had been cut before the master in the previous release). In total, the recording time is 14 minutes longer than the previous one, and the newly found unrecorded song … This work can be said to be a historic discovery that reveals the whole picture and truth of the day!
According to Taper, this Heidelberg performance was held with a capacity of 300 people (!). This sound source also has a sound that reflects that, and the feeling of distance from the stage is very close, and it is recorded with a lively and direct musical sound. Especially the bass is powerfully contained, and the sound that Cozy’s bass drum and Neil’s bass tremble with the air is unbearable! Because of the audience recording at a small venue, it is difficult to make a big difference in the sound and cheers that come in even if the source is different, and the impression that I heard a little is “Isn’t it a full-length version that has already been released, not another source?” As you might think, in addition to the loud shout “Come On Baby!” In the intro of “Back Where I Belong”, there are also cheers that can not be heard with each sound source, and if you compare it, it is definitely a different kind of sound source. You can judge.
From the opening intros “Mars” and “Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues”, the unique mood that the stage and the audience are closely connected creates a wonderful atmosphere. Not only famous songs such as RAINBOW’s “Stargazer” and BLACK SABBATH’s “Anno Mundi”, which are the features of this tour, but also the unfamiliar solo songs of each person, there is a big reaction from the audience. Cozy’s solo song “Shout” (“I Wanna Hear You Shout”) in “THE DRUMS ARE BACK” is addictive as if Martin had sung from the beginning, as well as Martin’s solo song “Back Where I Belong”. And “If It Ain’t Worth Fighting For”, you can enjoy a great combination of playing Cozy and Neil with Aun’s breathing. Martin’s song is exquisite in “If There Is A Heaven” on this day, which will be the first appearance, and it is a big listening place of this work along with the tasteful guitar of Mario Perga. “Ride To Win”, where Mario’s guitar competes with Cozy’s drums, can be enjoyed more deeply by listening to it in comparison with the take of “BACK TO WIN –TOUR REHEARSALS 1992”. The Japanese-like voice “Angkor!” That was included cannot be confirmed with this sound source. This is probably because the recording position is different.)
Although it was a show of a band led by Cozy, this is not a famous band like RAINBOW. I was surprised that even one sound source remained, but since such another sound source was excavated in a live performance of only about 300 people, it is just a miraculous word! For a total of about 90 minutes from the opening to the closing, the value of this work, which is a series of scenes that you do not know even though it is a show that you should know, is immeasurable for fans.
By listening to “THE DRUMS ARE BACK ROUGH MIX” released at the same time, “BACK TO WIN –TOUR REHEARSALS 1992” mentioned above, and this work in chronological order, the understanding of the activities that Cozy carved in 1992 jumped. Will increase. If you’re a fan of heavy metal hard rock, you definitely have to listen to this 2-disc set!
