「MSG: TAPE ONE STUDIOS CASSETTE TAPE」のボーナストラックとして収録されたマイケル・シェンカー・グループのデモ３曲が収録されていたマクセルUD XL1テープ「MSG/The 81 Selection」。当時、コージーはMSGのデモテイクを録音したカセットの余白が勿体ないと思ったのか、自身のお好みテープを造って聞いたいたようです。題して「THE ’81 SELECTION」（と、コージーの直筆でカセットインデックスに手書きされています。）ミュージシャンのベストセレクション・テープを聴ける機会というのは滅多にないと思いますが、ある意味、本盤は1981年、コージーの音楽的趣味・嗜好は勿論、当時興味を持っていたバンドや音楽がリアルに判るファン必携盤と言えるでしょう。当時のファンがそうだったように、コージーもレコードから好みの曲をセレクトしてテープに落として聴いていたようです（曲頭に針パチが聴こえるのが多い）。このテープをかけながら、コージーは自身の愛車でドライヴを楽しんだりしていたのでしょうか？メロディックでビートの効いた力強いナンバーが好きなコージーらしく、当然のことながら、彼の趣味が色濃く出た一枚と言えるでしょう。アラン・パーソンズ・プロジェクトやサッド・カフェ、更には意外にもテクノポップのNew Musik等が入ってたりして嬉しくなったりしますが、注目は何と言っても自身が今後加入することになるホワイトスネイクやゲイリー・ムーア（結構先ですが・・・）。仲間のグラハム・ボネットやジャック・ブルース、更には脱退後のレインボーのI Surrenderが入っているのは驚きです。他にも80年の「MONSTERS OF ROCK」から好きになったのかな？と思わせるタッチや、英国人らしくクリフ・リチャードの当時のヒット曲も入ってたり、多彩な内容の選曲が楽しめます。一曲目が既に低迷期に入りつつあったユーライア・ヒープですが聴けば、これに代表されるような、フェノメナっぽいと言うか、こういうのが好きそうだな～と思わせる湿ったメロディ満載の曲が続きます。しかし冒頭にも書いた通り、MSGのデモテープの余白で、自身のお好みテープを作ってしまうとは…こういったエピソードからも、コージーの愛すべき人柄が伝わってくるような一枚です。コージー自身がチョイスした、1980年～1981年のあの雰囲気に浸れる一枚を是非お楽しみ下さい。
