In recent years, “Mike Millard Tape” has been digitized from the master direct or low generation tape. This tape was recorded by Mike Millard, a taper familiar to fans due to the outstanding technology of audience recording. The label has released several sound sources based on this newly digitized Mike Millard tape, but if you look closely, you can see “Brushed Mike Millard Tape” and “Legendary Mike Millard.” Did you notice that there are two types of tapes? Not all Mike Millard tapes have perfect sound quality, and some have a lot of room for improvement, and the “Brushed” series has been significantly improved. Originally, it is almost perfect and there is not much room for sound quality improvement, and the “Legendary” series is the one that has been kept to a minimum such as light editing between songs.
This time, Chicago is coming from the “Legendary” series. It was also active on the easy pop music line of the 1980s, but this is still 1976. With a powerful horn and brass, you can enjoy groovy and soulful performances. The power of the performance is well captured, but the vocals are a little confused with the echoes. Still, considering the times, it is a master tape of Mike Millard recording with sufficiently high sound quality.

近年マスター直、或いはロウ・ジェネレーションのテープからデジタル化が進んでいる“マイク・ミラード・テープ”。オーディエンス録音の卓越した技術でファンにはお馴染みのテーパー、マイク・ミラード氏により録音されたテープです。同レーベルからもこの新デジタル化のマイク・ミラード・テープをマスターにした音源が複数リリースされておりますが、よく見ると“ブラッシュド・マイク・ミラード・テープ”と“レジェンダリー・マイク・ミラード・テープ”の二種類があることにお気付きでしょうか。マイク・ミラード・テープも全てが完璧な音質なわけではなく、中にはかなり手を加えて改良の余地があるものもあり、大幅に手を加えて改良されたものが“ブラッシュド”シリーズ。元々完璧に近く音質改良の余地があまり無く、曲間等の軽い編集など最低限にとどめてあるものが“レジェンダリー”シリーズとなります。
今回は“レジェンダリー”シリーズよりシカゴ登場です。80年代イージー寄りなポップス路線でも活躍しましたが、これはまだ76年。強力なホーン、ブラスを擁しグルーヴィーでソウルフルな演奏が楽しめます。演奏の迫力は良く捉えられていますが、ヴォーカルがやや反響音にまぎれ気味。それでも時代を考えれば十分高音質なマイク・ミラード録音のマスター・テープです。
