Rolling Stones / Wembley Stadium 1999 Day 2 / 2CD / Non Label-3800 Live at Wembley Stadium, London, UK 12th June 1999 Play sample : Click Image To Enlarge 早いものでローリング・ストーンズ「WEMBLEY 1999 2ND NIGHT」がリリースされて10年近い歳月が経過しようとしています。1999年に行われた仕切り直しバビロン・ツアーのハイライトであったウェンブリー・スタジアム二日目の模様を素晴らしい音質で捉えた名作オーディエンス・アルバム。最初に述べたように、これが入手困難になって久しくなりますが、マニアの間で高い評価を受けた理由はそれまでトレーダー間にも流通したことのない独自入手オーディエンス録音でなおかつ音質が非常に優れていたからでしょう。野外スタジアムという大会場での録音でありながら、ミックのボーカルを始めとして演奏を非常にオンな音像で捉えていたことが人気の秘訣。それ故に当時入手できなかった、あるいは後になって本タイトルの存在の存在を知ったマニアから再発のリクエストが絶えなかったアイテムでもある。 そんな名録音が遂に再登場を果たすのですが、もちろん単なる再発な訳がない。何しろ2011年のリリース時から今日までの間にマスタリング・テクノロジーは大幅に進歩。その恩恵を受けたアッパー版に生まれ変わったからこそ、今回の再発が実現するのです。とにかく聞きやすさでは当初から定評のあった音源ではありますが、それと同時に厚みを欠いた、スカスカな音質であったというのも事実。ダリル・ジョーンズのベースラインに至っては聞き取るのが至難の業と言ってレベル。またウェンブリー・スタジアムとは思えないほど音像の近さも大きな魅力ではあったものの、その反面、音の広がりに欠けているという状態も惜しまれる点でしょう。 そこで今回のリリースに当たっては、2011年当時には不可能であった最新技術によるイコライズを施すことで音質の劇的な向上を実現させました。繊細なレストアを求められるアナログ録音と違い、デジタル録音のイコライズは現代のテクノロジーとの相性が抜群。不自然さを招くことなく、音質がいい方向に変化してくれるのです。まずスカスカだった音域が一気に生まれ変わり、ダリルのベースもしっかり聞こえるようになりました。低音を上げるイコライズは一歩間違えると浮かび上がってきても、肝心の低域がモコモコ、モヤモヤしてしまうこともあります。しかし最新技術によるイコライズはそうした不自然さや違和感を覚えることなく、それでいてベースラインをしっかり浮き立たせてみせました。 もう一つの欠点であったレンジの狭さ。これがまた一気に改善され、既発では感じられなかったライブならではの広がりや臨場感までも向上。実際に2011年の既発盤をお持ちの方には是非とも聞き比べていただきたいのですが、かなり劇的な音質の向上を遂げたことに驚かれるはず。これぞ「アッパー版」と呼ぶに相応しい。 こうして音質が劇的な向上を遂げてくれたからこそ、前回以上に生々しく伝わってくるのがストーンズの好調ぶり。ミックを始めとして、いつもロンドンに来るときはおなじみ「大都市スイッチ」の入ったトップ・コンディションな彼らですが、本当にこの日のストーンズは調子がいい。前日はキースがイントロをまるで弾けずにやり直した「Gimme Shelter」のハプニングがよく知られるところですが、そうした危うさが一掃されているのが二日目らしいところ。それ以上に「Bitch」を演奏するとキースを始めとしたバンドのスイッチの入りが早い、という現象もこの頃からのように思えます。またハプニングといえばこちらではBステージのオープニング「Route 66」のイントロにミキサーの操作が間に合わず、摩訶不思議なライブ・フェイドイン・バージョン（笑）が有名ですが、音質が向上した分かすかに鳴っていたイントロの輪郭もはっきりしています。 そして2011年のリリースでは原音の迫力不足が一番目立ってしまった「Saint Of Me」でもようやく本来のグルーヴィーな勢いが伝わってくるようになりました。おまけにここで見せた会場の盛り上がりが後ろから押し寄せてくるような独特の臨場感も今回のイコライズによって一段と引き立っています。何より今から20年前（もうそんなに！）のストーンズです、タイトで熱のこもったロンドンらしい名演を心ゆくまでお楽しみください。これは初心者からマニアまで幅広く聞きこめるであろう相当なアッパー版です。もちろん今回はジャケ写もしっかり1999バビロン・モード！ ★最初の80枚のみ、ナンバリング入りステッカー付でのリリースとなります。 Disc 1 (69:34) 1.
