この後もスプリングスティーンは何度かソロ・ツアーやギグを行いましたが、それらの方が親しみやすい内容だったことから、なおさら「TOM JOAD」ツアーは弾き語りで行ったツアーのありがたみが薄れてしまいました。これは一重に淡々とした曲調の演奏の多いステージだったことが原因だったように思えてなりません。特にツアーが開始された1995年から96年のステージはその傾向が強く、過去の名曲の弾き語りが聴けるのかと思いきや、アルバム「GHOST OF TOM JOAD」からの収録曲と、過去の曲もそれに合わせたかのような淡々としたアレンジで演奏されていたことがなおさら一本調子なように聴こえてしまったようなもの。

その点、96年11月にスプリングスティーンが故郷のニュージャージーでライブを行った際に「The River」を演奏した辺りから、ようやく過去のレパートリーが増え始めます。さらに「Two Hearts」や「Bobby Jean」といった過去の曲も投入されていたことから、97年の来日公演は「TOM JOAD」ツアーにおいてもっともバランスの良い選曲で行われた時期となりました。

今回リリースされるのはタイトルが示す通り最終公演である1月31日。この日はクリスタル・キャットの名盤「TOKYO NIGHT」がリリースされている日。もちろんそれとはまったく別のオーディエンス録音であるばかりか、また違った魅力を放つ極上音源なのです。録音してくれたのは当店のストーンズにクラプトン、ジェフ・ベックなどのタイトルでおなじみのテーパーによるものであり、もちろんトレーダー間にも一切流通していなかった貴重音源。
彼が録音してくれた最終日ステージのクオリティの高さ、それこそ「クリアネス」と呼ぶに相応しいもの。「TOKYO NIGHT」はそれこそサウンドボードのような音圧が素晴らしい録音でしたが、今回の音源もまたサウンドボード・レベルの驚愕クオリティでありながら、より繊細な音質がアコースティックの弾き語りの繊細さを余すところなく伝えてくれます。さらに「TOKYO NIGHT」よりも周囲の観客の声が静かであり、場所によっては針を落としても聴こえそうなほどのサイレントぶりには驚かされるばかり。アコースティックなライブを聴き込むのに、これほど理想的な録音状態はないでしょう。

97年の来日公演においてはストーリーテラー・ステージということから、いくつかの曲間においてスプリングスティーンが頑張って日本語を話してくれているのも聴きどころ。英語が通じない国でのステージでもオーディエンスに少しでも理解してもらおうとした彼の誠意が感動を呼びます。同じように感動を呼び起こすのが、それぞれの曲の繊細な演奏。もちろん「Atlantic City」や「The River」といった名曲群にも惹かれるのですが、ライブが中盤から後半に向かう「Sinaloa Cowboys」から「Across The Border」辺りまでの癒しサウンド・パートは今回のリリースによって再評価していただきたいポイントであり、むしろ日本人に響くのでは?と思える優しい演奏が魅力。そして何よりも、そんな繊細なサウンドをイコライズもなしに捉え切った新たな音源の素晴らしさを、限定のプレスCDにてじっくりと味わってください。「TOM JOAD」ツアーを聴いたことがないファンにも自信を持っておすすめします。
