Boz Scaggs in 1980 was in full swing with the three consecutive platinum hits of “SILK DEGREES,” “DOWN TWO THEN LEFT,” and “MIDDLE MAN,” which welcomed TOTO members. An original recording that allows you to experience the performance in Japan on-site is a new excavation.
The performance of “October 20, 1980: Nippon Budokan” was imbued with this work. It is the super-best audience recording. I’m sure some of you may have come to the title “DEFINITIVE MASTER”, but this is the first master to jump out of the much-talked-about collection. It is a master’s treasured work that shocked with THE POLICE’s “BUDOKAN 1981 (Wardour-465)” and Jeff Beck’s “YOKOHAMA 1980 (Wardour-467)”.
The quality is shocking, but first of all, the position of the show. Boz has been visiting Japan repeatedly until now, but 1980 is the time when it will be its first peak. Let’s look back on that schedule.

In particular, I played three times at Nippon Budokan only twice in 1980 and 1988. This work was recorded at one of those performances at Nippon Budokan, and it was the last day of the climax Japan Tour, which was a big bird.
This work, which was vacuum-packed at such a site, is a famous recording that depicts the “best” in a picture. Anyway, it is on and the core is thick, so there is no sense of distance. Although it also absorbs the natural sound of the hall, it gives the core an exquisite luster while not hiding any details. Although it is arranged like an FM broadcast mixed later, the natural feel is extremely elegant because it is a one-shot recording. Yes, the greatest taste of this work can be said to be “dignity”. It’s not just about a simple sound board, it’s natural, on-site, and real. Even though the snare drum, which tends to be squishy, ​​is plentiful and “audience-like” cannot be found, only “beauty unique to the audience” is firmly engraved.
When I looked at the ticket, I was wondering what kind of position I recorded with such a sound, “?”. The image is also posted, but it says “Basement F row 14th”. “Basement”, not “1st floor” or “2nd floor”. From the meaning of the word, it means “underground floor”, but if you look up the dictionary, it is also “translation of ground floor (= 1st floor)”, so it seems to mean this. However, even so, it is a seat notation that I do not remember.
Quiet talk break. What is drawn with such a beautiful sound is a full show of Boz who received the heyday of the wind all over. The set is a little different from the best song selection that summarizes the career. Let’s organize it here so that you can realize its meaning.

以上、全10公演。その公演数もキャリア屈指ですが、中身を見ても各地の名会場がズラリ。特に日本武道館で３回も演奏したのは1980年と1988年の二度だけでした。本作が記録されたのはそんな日本武道館公演の１つであり、絶頂ジャパン・ツアーでも大トリとなる最終日でした。
そんな現場を真空パックした本作は「極上」を画に描いたような名録音。とにかくオンで芯が太く、距離感がない。ナチュラルなホール鳴りも吸い込んでいるものの、それが芯に絶妙な艶を与えつつ、ディテールを一切隠さない。後からミックスされたFM放送のように整っていながら、一発録りだからこその自然な感触が極めて上品でもある。そう、本作最大の旨みは「気品」と言ってもいい。単純なサウンドボード感だけを求めるのではなく、あくまでも自然で、現場的で、リアル。スカスカになりがちなスネアに至るまでたっぷりとしていて「オーディエンスっぽさ」が見つからないのに、「オーディエンスにしかない美しさ」だけはしっかりと刻まれているのです。
これほどのサウンド、一体どんなポジションで録音したのか……と思ってチケットを見てみると「？」。画像も掲載していますが、「地階Ｆ列14番」とあるのです。「１階」でも「２階」でもなく「地階」。言葉の意味からすると「地下の階」の事なのですが、武道館の地下階!?!?　辞書を引くと「ground floor（＝１階）の訳語」ともあるのでこっちの意味だと思われますが、それにしてもちょっと記憶にない座席表記です。
閑話休題。そんな美音で描かれるのは、全盛の風を全身に受けたボズのフルショウ。そのセットはキャリアを総括するベスト選曲……とは、ちょっと違う。その意味を実感していただくためにも、ここで整理してみましょう。
