Boz Scaggs in 1988 came to Japan to perform at the big event “DRY GIGS” with Billy Joel and Art Garfunkel. Introducing a valuable original recording that conveys the scene.

It is the excellent audience recording. “DRY GIGS” is a festival-style event sponsored by a beverage maker, which also serves as a promotion for the best compilation album of Western music. However, Boz did not come to Japan just for this one night, but also served as a Japan tour accompanying “OTHER ROADS” (“OTHER ROADS” was released worldwide on August 30th, but in Japan. However, the core that penetrates the center is unusually strong, and the outline is clearly sharp. And above all, the density of the sound. Even the snare, which tends to give a sense of distance, is captured with plenty of response, and it feels very close. The scale of the dome oozes in the sound that spreads behind the head (the applause that gently spreads like May rain between songs is a big spectacle), but the performance sound and singing voice that is struck in front of you is a name that is not like a dome. It’s a recording.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは、もちろん「1988年７月24日：東京ドーム公演」。その絶品オーディエンス録音です。“DRY GIGS”は飲料メーカーがスポンサーに付いたフェス形式のイベントで、洋楽ベスト盤の宣伝を兼ねたもの。ただし、ボズはこの一夜だけのために来日したわけではなく、『OTHER ROADS』に伴うジャパン・ツアーも兼ねていました（『OTHER ROADS』の世界発売は８月30日でしたが、日本では５月21日先行発売されていました）。まずは、そんな当時の状況が透ける来日スケジュールから始めましょう。

以上、全10公演。今週は『MIDDLE MAN』時代の新発掘ライヴアルバム『BUDOKAN 1980 FINAL NIGHT: DEFINITIVE MASTER（Zion-194）』も登場しますが、10回に及ぶ公演数も日本武道館３回というのも1980年以来のこと。この時はさらに加えての東京ドームなのですから、いかに当時の日本人気が凄まじかったがよく分かります。
さて、そんな記念碑的なフェス現場で記録された本作ですが、これがドーム離れした素晴らしさ。もうピンと来ている方もいらっしゃるでしょうが、実は同じフェスに出演したビリー・ジョエル編『Uxbridge 1431』やIMPELLITTERI篇『Shades 1303』がリリース済みでして、本作も同じ録音家によるもの。この２作を体験された方ならご存知と思いますが、そのサウンドは東京ドームというのが信じられない。
もちろん、サウンドボードと間違えるタイプではありませんし、ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませるまでもなくぶ厚い鳴りも吸い込んでいる。しかし、そのド真ん中を貫く芯が異様に力強く、輪郭もクッキリと切り立っている。そして何より、音の密度。距離感が出やすいスネアでさえ手応えたっぷりに捉えられており、えらく間近に感じられる。アタマの後ろ方向へ広がっていく鳴りにドームのスケール感が滲みつつ（曲間で五月雨のように優しく広がる拍手は大スペクタクルです）も、目の前に突きつけられる演奏音や歌声はドームらしからぬ名録音なのです。
そんなダイレクト・サウンドで描かれるのは『OTHER ROADS』ナンバーもたっぷりと楽しめる1988年ならではのステージ。その内容も整理しておきましょう。
