The “G. Mann” collection, which has the greatest impact on HR / HM collectors around the world in 2021. The early BON JOVI version is here.
It was “August 17, 1985 MONSTERS OF ROCK performance” that was imbued with such a work. Speaking of “MOR’s BON JOVI”, it is famous as the main act in 1987, but this work is an excellent audience recording when I first visited the sacred place Donington two years ago. At that time, it was the “7800 ° FAHRENHEIT” era, and we Japanese are familiar with the official video “TOKYO ROAD LIVE IN JAPAN ’85”. First, let’s confirm the position of the show from the history of 1985.
<< March 27, “7800 ° FAHRENHEIT” released >>
・ April 20-May 2: Japan (8 performances) ← * TOKYO ROAD
・ May 7-May 18: Europe (9 performances)
・ May 20-25: UK (5 performances)
・ June 1st-August 13th: North America # 1 (37 performances)
・ August 17: MONSTERS OF ROCK appearance ← ★ Coco ★
・ August 20-December 31: North America # 2 (85 performances)
This is the whole picture of “7800 ° FAHRENHEIT Tour”. Starting from the performance in Japan that was left in the official video, the circuit went from Europe to my home country. The Donington performance was also a special concert in which the North American tour was rounded up to the UK and only one performance was attended.
This work recorded at such a show is an on-name recording that seems to be “G.Mann”. Because there are no walls or roofs that reflect sound, the core with zero reverberation component is powerful, and if the outline is vivid, the details are clear. It’s not so close that it’s mistaken for a sound board, but it’s a clear sound that is as transparent as a broadcast sound source. Originally, it was a great recording that could be used as a permanent preservation press, but unfortunately it should not go through the whole story as it is. BON JOVI has about 45 minutes to perform about 7 songs, but the pitch gradually goes out of order from the end of the 4th song “In And Out Of Love”, and by the time it reaches the end, it becomes gnawgnya. It is. This is neither a dubbing failure nor a master deterioration. Perhaps the battery ran out during recording. “G. Mann” himself lamented, “In the end, I couldn’t record any other band,” and it was a painful failure.
Unfortunately, it has a fatal flaw, but I can’t help but introduce this work. It’s a storm of must-listen points. First and foremost, the set. You can listen to plenty of early two masterpieces that you can’t hope for now. As mentioned above, 1985 is based on the official video “TOKYO ROAD”, so let’s organize it while comparing it.
・ Runaway at dawn: Breakout / Runaway / Get Ready
・ 7800 ° Fahren Height: Tokyo Road / Only Lonely / In And Out Of Love
・ Others: I Don’t Want to Go Home (★)
* Note: The “★” mark is a song that cannot be heard even in the official video work “TOKYO ROAD”.
… And it looks like this. I heard the classics “Runaway” and “Tokyo Road” at every end of my career, but not the others. “Breakout” and “In And Out Of Love” were played only in the 1980s, and “Only Lonely” and “Get Ready” are rare songs that have been sealed for over 20 years. And the best thing is the cover “I Don’t Want to Go Home” of SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES. Not only can you not listen to it on “TOKYO ROAD”, but it is a valuable number that was shown only at a limited show even in 1985.
And the performance of spinning such a set is also extremely fresh. Although not as much as in Japan, he has been receiving a lot of attention in the UK right after his debut, and has been touring since 1984 when he first came to the UK. The popularity cultivated there is wonderful, and the tension of witnessing the hospitality of 10,000 units is enormous. If the singing voice is youthful, the beat is lively, and the guitar and keyboard obli are lively. Coupled with the feeling of openness that seems to be outdoors in summer, it is a really refreshing and radiant show.
Is “I Don’t Want to Go Home” the biggest listening point of such a show? Although it has a small piano accompaniment, it is almost a cappella, and the wonderful singing voice in which John and Ritchie are intertwined is exquisite. Then, John’s MC, who is sandwiched between the melody, comes suddenly. “I watched” LIVE AID “on TV the other day, but Wembley was more amazing than JFK!” “The stage of QUEEN was the best experience in my life !!” To grab the eagle. As you know, “LIVE AID” was held on “July 13, 1985”, and MOR was about a month later. Speaking of reports at that time, newspapers were at most weekly media, and the evaluation of each performer was still uncertain. Bon Jovi is enthusiastically talking about QUEEN at such a timing …. The scenery of the summer of 1985 is dazzling.
It was just one year after this work (released on August 18th) that the world was acquired with the big hit of “SLIPPERY WHEN WET”. Young BON JOVI who did not know that such a future would wait and faced the biggest festival in the UK with a straightforward rock fan psychology. This is a document album that allows you to experience such a historical scene with a refreshing clear sound. One piece full of “the real thrill of rock” that cannot be ignored even if it has a decisive defect. Please inhale “UK of 1985” to your heart’s content.
★ Newly excavated audience recording of “August 17, 1985 Donington performance”. It is an on-name recording that seems to be the popular “G.Mann” collection, and the core with zero echo is powerful because it is outdoors, and if the outline is vivid, the details are clear. Although the pitch in the second half went wrong, probably because the battery ran out during recording, it was still a must-listen point storm. You can enjoy plenty of delicious early songs, and also show off the extremely rare “I Don’t Want to Go Home”. There, John enthusiastically talks about “LIVE AID” a month ago, “The stage of QUEEN was the best experience in my life !!” A masterpiece of a document album with a dazzling summer landscape in 1985.
