5月末から始まるヨーロッパ・ツアーのリハーサルは5月下旬から行われていましたが、23日にLAのビヴァリー・シアターで行った、ツアー開始直前のリハーサルの模様が昔からマニアの間ではよく知られているもの。今回の限定のプレスCDリリースはその音源の集大成となる内容となっています。

まず一枚目に収録されたのは「DRESS REHEARSAL」や「MAJESTIC BELLS OF BOLTS」といったLPでマニアには知られていたステレオ・サウンドボード録音によるリハーサル音源。その後2008年になってこの音源のアッパー版が登場し、それを収録したのがラトルスネイクの「ANGEL OF RAIN」だったのです。LPの時代から比べるとかなりの音質の向上を遂げていたのは当然なのですが、いかにもリハーサルの流出音源らしくヒスノイズや低周波ノイズが持病であったことから、ラトルスネイクはお得意のイコライズを強烈に施していたのでした。確かにノイズは封じ込めてみせたものの、曲間ではシュワシュワとした音の余韻が漂ってしまう始末。いかにも前時代的なイコライズだったのです。
今回のリリースに際しても2008年のアッパー版音源を使用していますが、音の仕上がりはまったくの別次元。今回もヒスノイズはリスニングのストレスとならないよう抑え込みましたが、それでいて先のタイトルのようなイコライズによるあからさまな違和感は皆無。同タイトルのリリースから十年近い歳月が流れ、イコライズの進化とセンスや技術の違いを最大限に生かした仕上がりは、「ANGEL OF RAIN」を聞いたことがあるマニアであれば、思わず腰を抜かしてしまうレベルであると断言しましょう。さらに音源の間で微妙に変動の起きていたピッチの変動も緻密にアジャストし、いよいよストレスなく聞き通せてしまう仕上がりへと昇格させました！

二枚目のディスクには、懐かしのウォンテッド・マンから「DIRTY LIES」というタイトルがリリースされていたリハーサル音源。アイテムのリリースはそれ以来となる久々な登場であることから、今回のアイテムで初めてこちらのリハを聞かれるというマニアの方も多いのではないでしょうか。こちらの方がヒスノイズは強く、またセパレートも弱めなステレオ・サウンドボード録音であることからLAでのリハではなく、ツアー初日となった28日のコンサートを直前に控えたイタリアでのリハではないかという説もありました。しかし演奏が全体的にルーズであることに加え、一枚目のディスクでディランが試していた未完成曲「Almost Done」を再び演奏していることから23日のリハの続き、あるいはLAの別の日に行われたリハである可能性が高いと思われます。
そして今回のリリースがエッセンシャルと冠された所以、それは二枚目の音源で聴かれたインストゥルメンタル・ジャムをすべてカットし、さらには一枚目においても「Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat」の後にあったインストゥルメンタルの断片をカットするなどし、トータルでは三枚のディスクに及んでいた音源を二枚で収まるようコンパクトにしてみせた点にあります。どのアーティストでもツアー・リハーサルの音源と言えば片手間で演奏したインストゥルメンタルは付き物。
そこでインストゥルメンタルをカットして二枚のディスクにまとめた結果、俄然聞きやすい内容となっているのです。それに他のアーティストのリハーサル音源と違い、ディランの場合はいわゆる「稽古を重ねる」場面においてもバンドを自由に演奏させ、その合間でつい彼自身も「本気で歌ってしまう」ほどテンションが上がってしまった場面が多々見られます。例えば一枚目では「Just Like A Woman」を歌った途端にディランの歌がアツくなってしまい、それが本ツアーでライブの初披露を控えていた「INFIDELS」からの曲になれば、本番と遜色がないほどテンションの高い演奏が聞かれてしまう。
ミック・テイラーのギターに関しても既にディランは好きなように弾かせており、「Shelter From The Storm」でさっそく本領発揮なプレイを弾いており、それが「Man Of Peace」になると、もはや本番そのものといったバンドの一丸となった演奏に激しさに圧倒されてしまうばかり。

二枚目の音源ではディランが未完成の楽曲やウイリー・ネルソンのカバー曲を積極的に試している場面が非常に面白い。中でも「War Time, War Time, War Time」という未完曲など、80年代のディランがいかにも書きそうなハードなロックナンバーであり、バンドの演奏が意外なほど盛り上がってしまいます。反対に静かな「Almost Done」は既に一枚目の音源でアコースティックに試していた曲ですが、ここではバンドも演奏に加わっており、後の「Born In Time」を彷彿とさせるような雰囲気が漂っていました。
87年になってテイラーが初めて来日した際にこのツアーについて質問され、「ディランはその場で曲を作ってしまうことがよくあった」と証言していたのですが、正にそれを証明するような貴重な場面です。
そして一枚目の音源よりもラフな音質の二枚目に関しても、ジェネ落ちカセットにノイズ・リダクションをかましていた「DIRTY LIES」よりは俄然ナチュラルでクリアーな音質となっています。それをお持ちのマニアであれば、今回インストゥルメンタルをすべてカットした編集の意図を理解してもらえるはず。また先の未完成曲「War Time, War Time, War Time」からウイリー・ネルソンの曲を歌った「To Each His Own」まではディランでもテイラーでもないギターの音が随所で聞かれ、それがツアー本編においてアンコールで何度も演奏に加わっていたカルロス・サンタナであることは間違いありません。しかしディラン側からの推測ばかりが飛び交う一方、サンタナ側からの確証がないまま現在に至ってしまっており、今回も敢えてクレジットには記載していません。
こうしてそれぞれのディスクにツアー開始前とは思えないアツい演奏がつまった84年ツアー・リハーサルの集大成（もちろん一枚目の「Ballad Of A Thin Man」などはディランがモロに流して歌ってますが笑）。どちらのディスクに収められた音源も過去最高の音質であり、しかもコンパクトにまとめられたことで圧倒的に楽しめるリハーサル・タイトルに仕上がりました！
