1989年は名盤『OH MERCY』がリリースされた年ではありましたが、その割にこの時期のライブを収録したアイテムは多くありません。さらには同アルバムがリリースされた後のもっともアッパーな演奏を披露していた時期に至っては極端にアイテムが少ないほどです。現在でも名盤と呼ばれる『OH MERCY』リリース直後ということを考えると意外ですが、そんな状況に一石を投じるライブ音源が登場します！同アルバムリリース後のツアーは10月から始まりましたが、今回は10月20日のPoughkeepsie（ポキプシーと読みます）でのライブを収録。一聴して分かる抜群のクリアネス、さらにオンな音像には言葉を失ってしまいます。オープニングで演奏された「Times They Are A-Changin’」からしてその破格のクオリティを実感していただけるでしょう。
元の録音ではこの曲の序盤の録音レベルが極端に低く、今回のリリースに当たってはその部分にボリューム調整を施すことを検討したものの、音量の小ささを引き上げるとそれはもうヒスノイズが豪雨のような様相を呈してしまします。幸いにもこの日のライブでは別音源が存在しますので、冒頭部分にはそれをつないだことで安定した鑑賞を実現させました。
それ以外は音質だけでなく演奏も非の打ち所がない素晴らしさ。一曲目がディランのアコースティックな演奏から始まるという新鮮なオープニングから一転してGE・スミスのハードなサウンドが唸りをあげます。アッパーなテンポでぐいぐい迫る前半の「Absolutely Sweet Marie」や一転してスローなニューアルバムからの「What Good Am I?」など、あっという間に通り抜けるような前半から名曲が立て続けに演奏されるアコースティック・パート、そこまででも充実の演奏内容を保証しますが、このツアーではこの日からディランがピアノを弾く新機軸が導入されています。
しかもこの日に関しては「When You Gonna Wake Up」と「Ring Them Bells」という二曲でディランがピアノを弾きましたが、これら二曲が演奏されたのはこの日だけで、しかも「Ring Them～」はこの日がライブ初演というウルトラ・レアな場面です。演奏と音質の良さに加えてレアな演奏という、マニアには本当に魅力的な音源ですが、さらに今回ボーナス・トラックも追加しました。こちらは初登場の音源ばかりという贅沢なボーナスで、特にディランのピアノ用レパートリーが「Disease Of Conceit」となったことをシカゴの演奏で確かめてもらえると思います。さらには「Visions Of Johanna」のアコースティック・バージョンやロジャー・マッギンが飛び入りした「Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door」といったレア音源のオンパレード。ハードなサウンドが魅力の89年ツアーから久々の極上音源が限定のプレスCDにてリリース決定しました、ボーナスも含めてじっくりとお楽しみください！
