昨年末、ネット上にひっそりと現れたのがボブ・ディラン1966年の名盤「BLONDE ON BLONDE」の「3D audio」バージョン。それはマニアが独自のイコライズを施し、文字通り音の「立体感」を強調したミックスとしてネット上に発表したもの。もちろん元のマルチトラックからリミックスされたものではない訳で、演奏の印象まで変わって聞こえるような所謂「リミックス」の類とは違います。
あくまでイコライズによって通常のアルバムよりも立体感やライブ感を強調したのがこの「3D audio」でした。元々「BLONDE ON BLONDE」は66年にリリースされたスタジオ・アルバムの中では楽器の分離などに長けた仕上がりではありましたが、今回マニアが手掛けたミックスによって、それらのパーツが目の前に迫ってくるかのような状態へと進化している。なるほど、これが「3D audio」の目指したところだったのですね。
その違いが分かりやすいのは「I Want You」や「Most Likely You Go Your Way And I’ll Go Mine」どちらも左チャンネルでリードギターの存在感が絶大なミックスに仕上げられていたものですが、それが今回のリミックスによって、それこそ目の前でギターリフが弾かれているかの如く迫力のある音像で迫ってくるのです。
もっとも同じようにギターの目立つ楽曲であった「Obviously 5 Believers」になると思ったほどの効果は感じられず、さらに「Visions Of Johanna」においてもあまり違いは感じられなかったりするのですが…

一方オープニングナンバー「Rainy Day Women #12 & 35」とクロージングナンバー「Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands」はそれぞれに音の広がりやステレオ感の印象が変わっており、特に後者の豊かな音の広がりはアルバムバージョンよりも繊細さを感じさせるもの。確かに曲によって「3D audio」としての仕上がりにばらつきがあるのですが、全体を通して聞けば、通常のアルバムとは違った音場の、それこそ立体感の増したステレオ感が十分に楽しめるでしょう。
