このツアーと言うのがまた非常に面白い。毎回のように演奏されたのは「I Shall Be Released」と「Like A Rolling Stone」くらいで、後はオープニングからして曲目がガラッと変わる有様。珍しいカバー曲もバンバン飛び出す。挙句の果てにはディランの気分によって演奏の展開まで変わってしまう。だからこそツアー全体を聞く価値があると言っても過言ではないツアーなのです。今回リリースとなるのは千秋楽である6月28日に行われたギリシャの首都アテネでのライブ。
おまけにこのツアーは最高峰レベルのオーディエンス録音がゴロゴロと転がっており、昨年は6月10日ハーグでの名演が「HAGUE 1989」としてリリースされたのも記憶に新しいところ。同タイトルが示していたように、本当にこのツアーのオーディエンス録音は音がいい。今回のアテネの音質がまた凄い。これぞ「まるでサウンドボード」と呼びたくなるようなド迫力の音像ですし、とにかくディラン達の演奏を最前列で聞いているかのごとくオンなバランスに唖然とさせられるほど。「HAGUE 1989」もそうでしたが、今回も初心者からマニアまで、何の問題もなく安心して聞かれる極上音源。これこそ限定プレスCDと言うフォーマットが相応しい。仮にこの日のサウンドボード録音が流出したとしても、ここまでライブの臨場感と演奏の迫力の両方が伝わってくるリアルさは味わえないかもしれないでしょう。
また89年はディランとGEスミスのギター・コンビネーションに変化が訪れた年でもあります。それまではリードギターをGEが専任、ディランはリズムに徹していたのですが、この年から彼もリードやリフのフレーズを本格的に弾くようになったという。この日も最後の「Maggie’s Farm」で演奏が終わりかけたところでディランがリフを弾き始めてブルース・ジャムが始まるのですが、これこそ89年の典型と呼べる場面。しかも音質が良いので、二人それぞれのギターワークも明瞭に聞き分けられるのです。

内容がまた凄い。あまりに音が良いので「Shelter From The Storm」辺りからディランのスイッチが「オン」になる様子もしっかりと伝わり、彼の歌がどんどん熱を帯びてきます。そしてこの日最初の聞きものが「Every Grain Of Sand」。ここでは何とGEと二人だけのアコースティックバージョンとして演奏されたのだから驚き。これが実に素晴らしく、しかも見事にアコギ映えする演奏だったのですが、完全なアコースティック形式で演奏されたのは未だにこの日だけという大変に貴重なライブバージョンでもあったのです。
ライブ中盤ではハンク・ウィリアムスの「House Of Gold」という貴重なカントリー・カバーも演奏されますが、自身の好きな曲を歌っているからでしょう、ディランのやたらと気合の入った歌が素晴らしい出来栄えを示しています。結果としてこの曲がいつもの「I Shall Be Released」から「Like A Rolling Stone」というライブ本編を締めくくるメドレーに割り込む形で演奏されたのも非常に珍しいパターンでした。
アンコールがまた凄い。幕を開けたのは88年ツアーの忘れ形見的なトラディショナル・カバー「Lakes Of Pontchartrain」。前年よりも明るく、さらに力強い雰囲気で演奏されているのが新鮮で、そこから「The Times They Are A-Changin’」を続けざまに演奏する様といったら、もう誰もディランを止められないといった風。
そして極めつけに何とヴァン・モリソンが登場して自身の持ち歌を披露。これが驚くほどディランと息の合った歌を聞かせてくれるのですが、それもそのはず前日にモリソンのドキュメント「ONE IRSH ROVER」がBBCによって撮影された際、ディランも出演を承諾して二人してアテネの丘で同じ二曲を演奏していたからでした。おかげで飛び入り的なラフさよりも見事なコラボ感が際立った、ツアー最終日に相応しいデュエットになったのです。特に「Crazy Love」は絶品。

これだけの内容と音質を誇る名音源だったにもかかわらず、今までライブを完全収録した既発アイテムは10年前にTHIN MANレーベルから「HOUSE OF GOLD」がリリースされたのみ。しかも同レーベルのアイテムはネット上に出回っていた音源をただCD化するだけであり、本音源の欠点であった高いピッチはおざなりなままでした。それだけでも十分にマイナスだったのですが、当時出回っていたCD-Rに焼かれた際のミスで生じたトラック間のギャップまでもそのままだったという何ともお粗末な作り。
しかし今回はそうしたギャップのないベターコピーを元にしているのはもちろん、何よりピッチの狂いを丁寧にアジャストして文句なしの決定盤へと昇格させました。演奏よし、内容よし、そしてヴァン・モリソンまで登場という89年ヨーロッパ・ツアーの中でも屈指の名音源。文句の付けようがありません。

1989年の初夏に行われたヨーロッパ公演から6月15日のマドリード公演を収録したオーディエンスショットDVD-Rです。これは現存する二種類のファン撮影映像をまとめ、しかもそこに同日の音質良好なオーディエンス録音をアフレコさせたことでベストな状態へとまとめ上げたものなのです。中でもライブの前半と終盤に使われた映像はディランの姿を正面から、しかも大きく捉えている点で驚くほど見応えのあるものです。しかしそれほどの至近距離からの撮影ということでリスクも大きかったのでしょう、オープニングの「Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)」や終盤「Like A Rolling Stone」などは静止画によって埋められています。
しかし撮影が始まってすぐにディランとバンドがハンク・ウィリアムスのカントリー・カバー「House Of Gold」を楽しそうに演奏してみせる様子がしっかりと捉えられており、この場面だけでも十分に楽しめるレア映像となっています。そしてアコースティック・パートを中心に映し出されるもう一つの映像も上々なアングルであり、ライブ全体からもディランの好調な様子が伝わってくる、非常に充実した内容だと断言します。そこに音質良好なオーディエンス録音をアフレコさせたものですから、見やすさと内容を兼ね備えた充実のボーナス・アイテムをお楽しみください。
