今回のリリースに当たっても、元のオーディエンス録音はLP「SPANISH BOOT」と同じ音源を使用しました。もちろん今回はマスターからのコピーという鮮度抜群な状態の音源を使用し、先のLPをも凌ぐ最高音質を実現してしまったのです。LPの時から別格な音質が世界中のマニアに高い評価を受けていた音源ではありますが、今回のリリースにおいては、いよいよ完全無欠なクリアネスを実現。先祖CDとも言える「FROM THE COAST OF BARCELONA」など比較にもならないのです。ここまで音質が良いと、下手なサウンドボード録音を軽く凌駕しているレベル。
それを実証しようとしたわけでもありませんが、ボーナスにはこの日のサウンドボード録音も数曲収録しています。これは地元スペインのテレビ局で放送された映像のモノラル音声が元になっています。「Like A Rolling Stone」の映像などは妙なエフェクトが施された編集を記憶しているマニアもおられることでしょう。よってサウンドボード録音ではありますが、マルチトラック録音のようなクリアネスは望むべくもありません。ディラン弾き語りになると十分に楽しめるクオリティですが、バンド演奏になると今回のオーディエンス録音の鮮やかな臨場感や肉欲的にすら映る演奏のリアルな質感には及びません。つまり、ここぞとばかりに「下手なサウンドボード録音」をボーナス収録してみせた訳です（笑）

とにかく1984年ツアー最高の名演と呼ばれただけあって、この日の演奏は本当に素晴らしい！先にも触れたように、バンドのコンディションが一番いい時期だったというのが大きな要因だったと思われますが、文字通り熱狂的なバルセロナのオーディエンスのレスポンスがまた素晴らしく、それがディランの心を動かしたのは間違いありません。その証拠がこの日を締めくくった「Blowin’ In The Wind」の大合唱と、それに大喜びして何度もオーディエンスに歌わせようとしたディランの姿でしょう。そこで今回もリリースに際し「THE BEST SHOW」のタイトルを冠したのです。
もちろんバンド全体も最高のコンディションにあった時期ですので、ミック・テイラーも「I And I」を皮切りとして、ホットなフレーズを思う存分弾いてくれています。ベーシストのグレッグ・サットンがディランの休憩タイムに歌う「I’ve Got To Use My Imagination」でも凄まじい弾きっぷりで、ディランと関係ない演奏だからと飛ばす訳にはゆきません。むしろテイラーのリードに注目するつもりで聴き込んでみれば、彼の圧倒的なプレイに打ちのめされてしまうはず。
