まず昨年末に話題となったのは1964年ロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールでのライブを収めた音源でしょう。ディランの初イギリス・ライブ・パフォーマンスとなったこの公演は以前から録音の存在が確認されており、遂に昨年末に登場した時はファンの間や専門誌などでも大いに話題を呼びました。それまでかろうじて数曲がアンダーグラウンドに流通していたロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールのステレオ・サウンドボード録音が遂に全貌を現したからです。おお、これぞリアル・ライブ・レコーディングと呼びたくなる完璧なステレオ・サウンドはこのまま「BOOTLEG SERIES」でリリースされたとしても何ら遜色のないパーフェクトなクオリティ！
しかもアルバムに例えれば「THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’」のリリースから数か月が経過し、それでいて既に次のアルバム「ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN」の曲が演奏されているという、ファンであれば誰もが感嘆の声を上げるであろう、魅力的な過度期のライブということになります。

「FREEWHEELIN’ BOB DYLAN」はリアル・フォーク時代のディランが作り上げた最高傑作だったのですが、続く「THE TIMES～」は彼の長いキャリアからすると「最初の過度期の始まり」と言えるものです。例のリアル・フォーク時代はこのアルバムで終わりを告げただけでなく、それでいて「FREEWHEELIN’」のような力強いメッセンジャーたる姿も後退していたのです。
それが1964年になるとさらに加速し、ディランは以前のようなメッセンジャー的なフォーク・シンガーの役割を完全に終えてしまいます。それまでのメッセージ的な歌から一転して私小説と言っても過言ではない作風が文字通りの「ANOTHER SIDE～」となる訳ですが、ここロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールに集まった観客のほとんどは「FREEWHEELIN’」ディランのイメージを期待して集まっていたことでしょう。

それでいて「Walls Of Red Wing」や「Eternal Circle」といったリアル・フォーク時代のレア・ナンバーを演奏しているがこの日のライブの本当に独特な魅力です。やはり過度期の始まりですので、まだまだフォーク時代の曲もふんだんに取り上げている一方で、その演奏から感じられる雰囲気は前年とまったく違うものでしょう。

そんなファン狂喜のレア・ライブではありますが、ピンク・フロイド近年のスタジオ・レア音源などと同じように、アナログLPを介して音源が出回ったのは何とも厄介なことですよね。しかしご安心ください！今回の収録に当たってはLPから発せられるスクラッチノイズをピンポイントで削除するのは当たり前。さらには「Chimes Of～」や「A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall」で頻発する、発声時の息がマイクにポンポン当たるノイズ、さらには後者で見られたマスターの経年によるわずかな音切れなども緩和させ、ストレスなく聴ける状態へと仕上げました。恐らく1964年当時にはこれに対する術がなくお蔵入りしていたのかもしれません。
昨年末にファンが狂喜したメガ・レア・ライブが遂に限定のプレスCDにしてリリースされます！これにて入手困難なLPを探さずとも、あるいは何度もレコードの面を変えずに楽ちん再生のご機嫌なライブ・アルバムへと昇格しました。ボーナスにはフェスティバル・ホール出演前の放送用音源（これも昨年リリースに含まれていたものです）を収録。これらのCD化を待ち望んでいたディラン・ファンは多いはず。最高のレア・ライブを最高の音質と安定のプレスCDで何度も聴き返してください！
