From the initial tour of BLUE OYSTER CULT, a new live album that fans must listen to is now available. On December 31, 1973, prior to the announcement of “SECRET TREATIES”, the performance of “Academy of Music” in New York was recorded for about 43 minutes from the sound board master. From the very early “basement” sound, you can enjoy the transitional live where the band’s individuality is established in the 3rd album with the best lineup without abandoned songs!
In addition to the continuous announcement of official live works, the production of a new studio album for the first time in about 20 years and the surroundings of BLUE OYSTER CULT (hereinafter B.O.C.) have been booming for the first time in a while. This time, the Uxbridge label also released two must-listen soundboard live shows in 1973 that will make B.O.C. enthusiasts even more happy. This is the New York edition on December 31st.
Since the live in February, which was included in the simultaneous release “DETROIT 1973”, B.O.C. has toured the United States almost without rest. It was a hard schedule to digest 92 performances until the end of the year. In the meantime, they are also working on the songs that will be included in the 3rd album “SECRET TREATIES”. The “New Year Gig” sound source from New Year’s Eve 1973 to New Year’s Day 1974 was known among enthusiasts (actually, KISS was the opening act of the day). However, it was only in recent years that a master in excellent condition was discovered. This work is a vinyl record made from materials in particularly good condition provided by overseas enthusiasts. The sound is an air check master with outstanding stability and ease of listening. The taste of the performance is further elaborated than “DETROIT 1973”. However, the decisive difference is the number of song selections. The “SECRET TREATIES” number, which was just born during the tour, is unfolded in the initial version (additionally, this live is the first live source where you can see the 3rd song together). If you organize the songs that you can listen to in this work, it is exactly the best song selection of the early B.O.C.!

Although a new direction was emerging in the music, it seems that the performance was literally a cult “basement” sound at this time of year! “Dominance And Submission”, which was a relatively bright song on the album, made me feel dust and moisture (although there is a sound image of this recording), and I can not stand the rough and rough performance. The arrangement of the following “Astronomy” is different from the introduction part. This song is a representative song of a band that has been remade multiple times. Its earliest version will give you the surprise of a new discovery that “seems to know but doesn’t know”. In contrast, “Me 262” is closer to what we know of live arrangements. Playing for about 10 minutes including the band’s jam part is the most thrilling! The energetic and groovy play of “Born To Be Wild” and “Buck’s Boogie” that color the climax of the live is not just heavy, but the performance group B.O.C. It’s a pity that it’s not a complete recording of the live, but it’s 43 minutes that you can listen to all at once without slackening.
BLUE OYSTER CULT went to the ground with “SECRET TREATIES” which expressed the original individuality after the underground era from debut to “TYRANNY AND MUTATION”, and “AGENTS OF FORTUNE”, that is, “(Don’t Fear)” With the birth of “The Reaper”, we will leap forward to “a place in the sun”. At that time, just before the release of their 3rd album, they were, so to speak, “semi-underground residents.” It’s a core era that can’t be seen anywhere else in a long band history.

’73年大晦日～’74年元日の“ニューイヤー・ギグ”音源は、マニア間で存在自体は知られていました（実はKISSがこの日のオープニング・アクト）。しかし優れた状態のマスターが発掘されたのは近年になってから。本作は海外マニアから提供された、特に状態の良い素材から音盤化したものです。そのサウンドは安定感・聴き易さとも抜群のエアチェック・マスター。演奏の旨みは『DETROIT 1973』よりさらに練られています。しかし決定的に違うのは選曲の数々。ツアー中に生まれたばかりの『SECRET TREATIES』ナンバーが初期バージョンで繰り広げられています（付け加えると、本ライヴは3rdの曲がまとまって確認できる、最初のライヴ・ソースです）。これら本作で聴ける楽曲を整理すると、まさに初期B.O.C.のベスト選曲ではありませんか！

楽曲に新たな方向性が芽生えつつあっても、演奏は文字通りカルトな“地下室”サウンドなのが、実にこの時期らしい！ アルバムでは割合ブライトな曲想だった「Dominance And Submission」は（本録音の音像もありますが）埃と湿気を感じさせ、ラフで粗削りな演奏も堪らない。続く「Astronomy」も導入部分からアレンジが異なる。この曲は複数回リメイクされているバンドの代表曲。その最初期バージョンは「知っているようで知らない」新発見の驚きを得られるでしょう。それとは対照的に「Me 262」はライヴ・アレンジが我々の知るそれに近い。バンドのジャムパートを含む約10分のプレイは最高にスリリング！ ライヴのクライマックスを彩る「Born To Be Wild」と「Buck’s Boogie」のエネルギッシュかつグルーヴィなプレイは、単にヘヴィなだけでない、演奏集団B.O.C.の面目躍如です。ライヴの完全収録では無いのが実に残念ですが、中だるみせず、一気に聴き通せる43分間です。
BLUE OYSTER CULTは、デビューから『TYRANNY AND MUTATION』までのアングラ時代を経て、オリジナルの個性を表明した『SECRET TREATIES』で地上へと顔を見せ、『AGENTS OF FORTUNE』すなわち「 (Don’t Fear) The Reaper」の誕生で“日の当たる場所”へ飛躍していきます。3rdアルバム発表直前であるこの当時、彼らは言わば“半地下の住人”だった。長いバンド史でも他に観られないコアな時代なのです。
