BLACK SABBATHの「HEADLESS CROSS」リリースに伴う1989年ヨーロッパツアーより、新たな必聴盤が2枚組の完全限定プレスCDで登場です! 本作ではツアー中盤に当たる9月14日,スウェーデン・ストックホルム公演を、地元の名テーパー”Per Erik”録音によるオリジナル・マスターから音盤化。サバスのキャリアにおいて、最もメロディアスだった当時のライヴを、鮮度抜群で優秀なオーディエンス・サウンドで満喫させます!

1969年から2014年に至るまで、実に45年間もの歴史を持つBLACK SABBATH。オジー・オズボーンとの活動を再開した’97年以降こそ、”ヘヴィ・メタルのゴッドファーザー”として揺ぎ無い地位と存在感を放っていますが、’80年代から’90年代にかけてはメンバー・チェンジが続き、不安定な時代がありました。しかしこのメンバーの多さ、シンガーごとに変わるバンドの表情が、新たな支持者を獲得したのもまた事実。特に’80年代終盤から’90年代初め、トニー・マーティンが在籍していた時代は、サバスの長いキャリアでも特にメロディアスなサウンドが実現しました。とりわけコージー・パウエルとニール・マーレイがリズムを支えた「HEADLESS CROSS」ツアーと「TYR」は、今も日本のファンから高い評価が与えられています。
サバスが長い混乱期を抜け、バンド活動が蘇った「HEADLESS CROSS」ツアーは、数多くのライヴ素材が存在しています。サウンドボードやプロショットに限らず、オーディエンス録音もまた豊富で、アメリカツアーの「HEADLESS IN AGORA」(Zodiac)やイギリスツアーでの「DEVIL & DAUGHTER」(Shades)など、決定版級のプレスCDタイトルも多く知られています。中でも’89年9月15日のコペンハーゲン公演を収めた「RUNIC ECHOES」(Shades)は、広がりのある音場が幻想的なサウンドを演出し、マニアから「’89年のベスト録音」と言われているほど。
しかしその前日、9月14日のストックホルム公演でも、それに優るとも劣らない名録音が残されていました。録音者はストックホルムで数多くの名作を手がけた”Per Erik”その人! ゲイリー・ムーアの「THE PRISONERS OF FATE」や、イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンの「1988: A SWEDISH ODYSSEY」など、同時代のライヴを真空パックした手腕が、このサバス・ライヴでも遺憾なく発揮されていたのです!

テーパーの”Per Erik”によれば、この日はステージに向かって右側、PAの直前約4メートルの位置から、マイクをステージに向けて収録したとの事。音の見通しはもちろん極上で、バランスや広がり、ダイレクト感は絶妙です。PAからの出音が強かったのか、ライヴ開演直後から「Headless Cross」にかけては低音の入力がやや強い印象(リマスターで最大限の改善を施しています)。しかし「Neon Knights」序盤で音が落ち着くと、サウンドはさらに向上。本録音の長所である高音の抜けと楽音のバランスが調和し、ほとんどサウンドボードのような質感でライヴを聴き込めます! クリアなサウンドが聴き手を魅了する「Children Of The Sea」、しなやかで舞うような楽音が堪らない「Die Young」(イントロおよび曲中で炸裂するアイオミのギターソロは必聴!)は、マーティン・サバスの魅力を余す所なく描き切る。コージーが叩き出すドラミングはもちろん大迫力! 聴き手を打ち抜くようなダイレクト・サウンドは、どの曲でも聴き手をノックアウトするでしょう!
メロディアスなロックが主流だった’80年代後半という時流において、サバスもその漆黒の楽音を、威厳と神秘性に転化していました。それを最も良く反映したのが「HEADLESS CROSS」からの「When Death Calls」と、前作「THE ETERNAL IDOL」の「The Shining」でしょう。艶とパワーを併せ持ったマーティンの歌唱は「この時だけ」の素晴らしさに満ちています!
ライヴの後半「The Mob Rules」・「Black Sabbath」・「Devil & Daughter」と、各時代の代表曲が続く場面も聴き逃せない。ロニーにオジーそしてマーティンと、サバスを代表するシンガーの名曲を網羅したセットは、まさにライヴで聴く”ベスト・オブ・サバス”! アンコールで演奏される「Heaven And Hell」と「Paranoid」のメドレーも、まさに大団円といった趣きで、90分を越える録音を大満足のうちに締めくくります!

本作は後日のライヴを収めた「RUNIC ECHOES」とともに、メロディアス・サバスの精華を後世に伝える一大叙事詩! その格式にふさわしい完全限定プレスCD2枚組で、ここに堂々のリリース決定です!
