本作最大のポイントは、その幻想サウンド。デジタル録音並みにクリアでありながら、偶然とらえられた豊かなエコーがアルバム「HEADLESS CROSS」「TYR」の世界観を見事に体現しているのです。この’89年ツアーからはサウンドボード音源の大定番「HEADLESS IN VIENNA」やデッドでタイトな音像の「DEVIL & DAUGHTER」（Langley Deluxe）など、数多くの優良音源がリリースされ、そのすべてがファンを驚かせ、また喜ばせてきました。本作は“ダイレクト感”ではこれらのタイトルに一歩譲るかもしれません。しかし、他タイトルではあり得ない絶品の会場エコーがたっぷりと含まれ、いわゆる「トニー・マーティン＆コージー・パウエル期」だけが持つ“神秘的でドラマティック雰囲気”を醸し出している。バンドの出音・会場の音響・テーパーの録音環境、この３つが奇跡的に出会ったオーディエンス・マジックが“「HEADLESS CROSS」世界観のライヴ”を生み出したのです！

すでにお気づきの方もいると思いますが、本作と同じ録音は「HEADLESS EUROPEANS」（Shades）としてリリースされています。発売直後からSABBATH＆コージーファンから大きな反響を呼び、プレスCD化を熱望する声が寄せられた傑作タイトルでしたが、今回はその声を後押しするように海外でオリジナル・マスターが登場！　極秘のルートでもたらされたそのダイレクト・デジタルコピーを元に、満を持してのプレスCD化。“これ以上はあり得ない”大本オリジナル・マスターだからこその永久保存仕様です！

ショウの幕開けを告げる「Ave Satani」から、会場全体の空気を丸ごと収めた臨場感、なおかつどこまでも見渡せるような明度が絶品です。これ以上でもこれ以下でも台無しになってしまうであろう絶妙なエコーを含み、コージーのドラムが威厳たっぷりに轟く「Headless Cross」での幕開け。アルバムの荘厳で劇的なオープニングをそのまま彷彿させ、聴いているだけでアルバムジャケットの荒涼世界から冷たい風が吹いてくるようです。
ライヴ中盤の「When Death Calls」も、神秘的なイントロから怒涛のように展開する中盤以降のコントラストが余りにも鮮やか。アイオミのギターはどこまでもスリリングで、時に鋭く、時に官能的な艶やかさを放つ音色には、’70年代のドゥーミーな恐ろしさとは異なるゴッドファーザーの威厳が溢れています。これが最後期の演奏となった「Devil And Daughter」も、スピード感ある演奏と漆黒の闇を連想させるムードの両立が最高です。
このようなサウンドの素晴らしさは「HEADLESS CROSS」ナンバーに留まらず、全時代の楽曲を統一カラーで塗り替えられていきます。オジー時代のヘヴィネスやロニー時代の気高さをも取り込みつつ、「HEADLESS CROSS」のアルバム世界がどんんどん広がっていくかのうよう。「Headless Cross」からスピーディに展開する「Neon Knights」のメリハリは’80年ライヴにも通じる雰囲気を醸し出し、格調高い「Children Of The Sea」に、”ロニー時代に匹敵する仕上がり”と絶賛された「Die Young」への流れは素晴らし過ぎて言葉も出ないほど！　また「When Death Calls」とメドレー化する事で、ギーザー・バトラーと組んだ同時期のオジーとも違う魅力を放つ「War Pigs」など、緻密に計算され完成されたライヴ構成には感嘆させられます。さらにコージーとニール・マーレイを得て最高のバージョンに衣替えした「The Shining」、厳粛さすら漂わせる「Black Sabbath」と、聴き手に休む暇なく名曲と名演を叩きつけてきます。
マーティンのコンディションも良く、ショウ終盤の「Heaven And Hell」・「Paranoid」まで安定感のあるヴォーカルを聴かせてくれます。彼の歌を中央に捉え、前述したアイオミのギターとコージのドラム、さらにニールのベースとジェフ・ニコルズのキーボードまで明瞭なセパレートで封じ込められており、実際のライヴ会場で耳に入るサウンド以上の音世界を追体験させてくれるでしょう。
そして本ライヴ最後にして最高の聴き所がアンコール。本作品では「HEADLESS EUROPEANS」以上の素晴らしい見通しとクリアさで、まるで「ROCK AID ARMENIA」かのように豪華なメンツの「Smoke On The Water」、先輩格のギランがマーティンを圧倒する大活躍を聴かせる「Paranoid」が繰り広げられます。リプライズされる「Heaven And Hell」リフを切り裂くギランのシャウトのカッコイイこと！　この歴史的饗宴、知られざる伝説には聴き手の誰もが興奮せずにはいられないでしょう！

ただでさえ聴き所満載の本作ですが、本編のライヴ終了後にはさらなるサプライズが待ち構えています！　ラストに収められた４曲は「HEADLESS CROSS」ツアー終了後に同一メンバーで製作された「TYR」のデモ・トラックス。伝説のコンピレーション・タイトル「REINCARNATION」にも収められた事がある音源ですが、今回は何とコージー所蔵のテープより新たなトラックも発掘しての追加収録。３曲それぞれミックスが異なる「Jerusalem」と、「The Sabbath Stones」のラフミックスが聴けます。
このうち最初に収められた「Jerusalem #1」（トラック9）が新発掘の世界初登場テイク。完成版以上に醸されたリバーブが幻想的で、曲中には完成版にはなかったコーラスもミックスされているなど、曲を通じて聴き逃せない場面の連続です。コージーらメンバーはこの３種類の「Jerusalem」を聴き比べながら、「どのミックスがもっともSABBATHにふさわしいのだろう？」と話し合ったかもしれません。聴き手の心に色々な想像をかき立てる貴重な４曲です！

驚くべきは、名盤のスタジオデモながら、オーディエンス・ライヴから続けて聴いても特に違和感を感じない事。これこそ、ライヴ本編の幻想サウンドがいかに当時のSABBATHに表現しきっているかの証とも言えるでしょう。コージーが轟き、マーティンが囁き、冷たく荒涼とした空気がたゆたう、“あのSABBATH”が本作には充ち満ちています。「（古代北欧の）神秘的な響き」のタイトルは伊達ではありません。BLACK SABBATHのコレクターズ・アイテム史に長く刻み込まれる、’89年絶対のマスター・ピースが誕生です！
