SABBATH’s first performance in Japan in 1980 is now known for the audience recording of the entire schedule. However, before, the radio broadcast on November 18th at Nakano Sunplaza was overwhelming, and its air check source has produced many standard items. Among them, the FM source contained in “DEMONIZATION” (Shades), which is a compilation of the live on the 18th with three different sound sources, has been evaluated as the best material that has appeared so far. The clear, audible sound, and the texture of the different mixes surprised fans as much as the soundboards from the mixing desk.
This time, a new excavation master has appeared in the FM source! This sound source includes the opening and ending that could not be heard with previously known items, achieving the longest recording time ever for an FM source. As a bonus for the press CD “DARK KNIGHT”, there is no better place to go!
The first “Supertzar” that pops out after playing the disc and the opening narration are 30 seconds, which was unknown until now. The calm tone of the narration is very impressive and accurately conveys the details of the live (it can be understood from the content that the live radio broadcast was in 1981). It’s not directly related to the performance, but it will surprise enthusiasts, “Is there such a scene?”
The sound quality of concern is as bright and stable as the “DEMONIZATION” recording take, which is considered by fans to be the “best of the broadcasting master”. Noise has been removed as much as possible by remastering, so listeners can listen to live performances with peace of mind.
The feature of the broadcast source that can be heard in this work is the musical sound that Jeff Nichols’ keyboard is clearly mixed. Jeff’s play, which was not noticeable in the sound board sound source and audience recording, is separated to the left and right channels with Iommi’s guitar, “Neon Knights”, “NIB” and “Children Of The Sea”. Entertain the band ensemble that can only be heard here (I feel a difference in localization compared to the reception status or the take of “DEMONAZATION”). This is the fun of radio broadcasting, and it can be said that it is a great individuality that can not be tasted even in the “DARK KNIGHT” released this time and the masterpiece “EVIL MAN” of audience recording.
Especially interesting are “Sweet Leaf” and “Iron Man” from the Ozzy era. While listening to Iommi’s heavy guitar on the left channel, everyone will instinctively listen to the unusually sounded keyboard that unisons on the right channel. Of course, Geezer’s bass and Vinnie’s drums can be heard with a solid presence, and “Lady Evil” with its impressive powerful rhythm explodes with an attractive sound! The highlights of the live, “Black Sabbath” and “Heaven And Hell”, where Iommi disappears, will be more interesting and enjoyable compared to the sound board sound source of “DARK KNIGHT”.
Although “War Pigs” is an incomplete version that has not been recorded due to broadcasting reasons, the recording time of exactly 60 minutes including narration is the longest ever. If you are a maniac who already has “DEMONIZATION”, this is the one that you should definitely check the difference! Following the highest peak of audience recording “EVIL MAN” and the newly excavated sound board “DARK KNIGHT”, the new master of FM source who tastes SABBATH’s November 18, 1980 from a new angle is a nice bonus. Released with the title!
SABBATHの’80年初来日公演は、現在でこそ全日程のオーディエンス録音が知られています。しかし以前は、ラジオ放送された11月18日・中野サンプラザ公演が圧倒的な存在で、そのエアチェック・ソースが多くの定番アイテムを生み出してきました。中でも18日のライヴを異なる3種類の音源で集大成した「DEMONIZATION」（Shades）に収められたFMソースは、これまで登場してきた素材の中でも最優秀という評価が定着しています。クリアで聴き応えのあるサウンド、そして異なるミックスの質感は、ミキシング・デスク由来のサウンドボード音源にも引けを取らないと、ファンを大いに驚かせました。
今回はそのFMソースに、新たな発掘マスターが登場！ 本音源では従来知られていたアイテムで聴けなかったオープニングとエンディングを含み、FMソースとしては過去最長の収録時間を実現しています。プレスCDの「DARK KNIGHT」のボーナスとして、これ以上ふさわしい存在は無いでしょう！
ディスクを再生して最初に飛び出す「Supertzar」とオープニング・ナレーションは、今まで知られていなかった30秒間。落ち着いた口調のナレーションは非常に印象的で、ライヴのディティールを的確に伝えています（その内容からは、ライヴのラジオ放送が’81年だった事も理解できます）。演奏と直接の関係はありませんが、「こんな場面もあったのか」とマニアを驚かせるでしょう。
気になる音質も、ファンから「放送マスターのベスト」とされる「DEMONIZATION」収録テイクと比較しても遜色ない明度と安定した収録状態。リマスターによってノイズは可能な限り除去されており、聴き手は安心してエンターテイメント性にあふれるライヴを聴き込めます。
本作で聴ける放送ソースの特徴は、ジェフ・ニコルズのキーボードが明瞭にミックスされた楽音。サウンドボード音源やオーディエンス録音ではもうひとつ目立たなかったジェフのプレイが、ここではアイオミのギターとともに左右のチャンネルへきっちりセパレートされており、「Neon Knights」に「N.I.B.」そして「Children Of The Sea」と、ここでしか聴けないバンド・アンサンブルを楽しませます（受信状態の関係か「DEMONAZATION」のテイクと較べて定位に違いを感じます）。これこそラジオ放送ならではの面白さで、今回リリースされる「DARK KNIGHT」や、オーディエンス録音の大傑作「EVIL MAN」でも味わえない、大きな個性と言えるでしょう。
特に興味深いのがオジー時代の「Sweet Leaf」や「Iron Man」。アイオミのヘヴィなギターを左チャンネルに聴きながら、右チャンネルでユニゾンする一風変わった音色のキーボードは、誰もが思わず聴き入ってしまうでしょう。もちろんギーザーのベースやヴィニーのドラムもしっかりとした存在感でプレイを聴き取る事ができ、パワフルなリズムが印象的な「Lady Evil」も魅力的なサウンドで炸裂します！ ライヴのハイライトである「Black Sabbath」や、アイオミが姿を消す「Heaven And Hell」も、「DARK KNIGHT」のサウンドボード音源と比較すると、より興味深く楽しめるでしょう。
放送の都合により「War Pigs」が未収録の不完全版ではあるのですが、ナレーションを含めてぴったり60分の収録時間は過去最長。「DEMONIZATION」をすでに持っているというマニアの方にこそ、ぜひ違いを確かめて頂きたい一本です！ 客席録音の最高峰「EVIL MAN」や、新発掘サウンドボードの「DARK KNIGHT」に続き、新たな角度からSABBATHの’80年11月18日を味わいつくすFMソースのニュー・マスターが、嬉しいボーナス・タイトルでリリースです！
