“オジー・オズボーンの引退公演”で実現した、夢の豪華饗宴。HR/HM界の一大事件だっただけに、ライヴ当時か長年にわたり、さまざまなタイトルを生まれてきました。パッと思いつくだけでも「OZZY OSBOURNE FINAL CONCERT」「OZZY MEETS THE PRIEST」「THE LEGEND IN HELL」「HEAVEN AND GOD」「LIVE & GOD」等々など………お手元にも１枚くらいはあるのではないでしょうか。こうした既発のほとんどはビデオ落としマスターで、接触不良音源や一体どれくらいのダビングやイコライジングを経てきたのかも分からないものが大半を占めていました。それなりにジェネレーションの若い高音質のマスターが話題になったこともあったものの、やはり「これ以上はない」とは言えませないものでした。
ところが！　今回、登場したのはビデオ落としとは別録音の“DAT Master Clone”。歴史的な共演を目の当たりにした観客の熱狂はビデオバージョンと似ていますが、それよりも明らかにサウンドの芯が太く、ダイレクト感も段違い。しかも、DATクローンなので限りなく劣化ゼロに近く、幾多の既発すべてを凌駕するぴっちぴちの鮮度。実際、本作から聞こえてくるサウンドは極めてナチュラルで、劣化ノイズも音飛びもない。さすがにマスターそのものだと音圧が低すぎるので調整しましたが、鮮度が落ちるようなことは一切しておりません。
ビデオマスターよりも収録時間も長く、ビデオ落としでは音飛びが激しかったり、カットされがちな「11月15日」の「E5150」「Mob Rules」も安定した美麗サウンド聴けますし、さらにはオリジナル再結成も長い前説から完全収録。既発タイトルは２枚組でしたが、今回のマスターは収まりきれず３枚組となりました。メタル界を震撼させた、夢の饗宴。今度こそ、今度こそ「これ以上はない」。ついに到達した究極サウンドを永久に残すプレス保存盤の誕生です!!!

いきなり豪華だ、夢だといきなりまくし立ててしまいましたが、なにせ23年前の出来事ですので、ロブ＆SABBATH共演が実現した背景も簡単にご説明しましょう。ロブ・ハルフォードは、常日頃から同郷の先輩BLACK SABBATHへの敬愛を欠かさない人ですが、彼がそのBLACK SABBATHのフロントマンとしてステージに立ったのは以下の３日だけです。

このうち、本作に収められているのは、“1992年コスタメサ公演”の２日間。そもそも、このコンサートは“オジー・オズボーン引退記念ライヴ”として行われました。当時、オジーは引退を宣言しており（３年後に撤回）、その最終公演として選ばれたのがカリフォルニアのコスタメサでした。当時のオジーは本気で“人生最後のライヴ”にするつもりであり、そのサポートにBLACK SABBATHが招かれたのです。竹馬の友たるトニー・アイオミ＆ギーザー・バトラーは、このオファーを二つ返事で快諾しましたが、当時のBLACK SABBATHで歌っていたロニー・ジェイムズ・ディオは「道化のサポートはしない」と出演を固辞。そのロニーの代役として、ロブ・ハルフォードに白羽の矢が立ったわけです。
ちなみに、ロニーの名誉のために付け加えておきますと、彼はふて腐れてSABBATHを飛び出したのではありません。このときの復帰プロジェクトは、初めから「アルバム１枚＋１ツアー」の契約。ロブの代役が決定した後もツアー最終日（コスタメサ公演の前日“11月13日”）までキチンとショウをこなし、キャンセルもなし。つまり「追加日程を断った」だけで、当初の予定通りに責任の果たして脱退したのです。

さておき、こうして実現した“ロブ＆SABBATH”。そのパフォーマンスは、豪華なネームバリューを超えた極上のメタル・ワールドが繰り広げられる。ロブ＆SABBATHと言うと、“2004年カムデン公演”のプロショットも有名ですが、あちらは“オジーの代役”だったのに対し、この時のロブは、あくまで“ロニーの代役”。「Children Of The Sea」「Die Young」「Heaven And Hell」など、ロニー時代のレパートリーも歌っていまして、そのメロディック＆ドラマティックな曲想はJUDA PRIESTに通じ、違和感どころか、ヒロイック・ヴォイスが高揚感をハネ上げてくれるのです。
パフォーマンス自体も、“2004年カムデン公演”より（圧倒的に！）優れている。なにしろ、2004年のときは、気管支炎でオジーの欠場が決まったのが本番当日。ロブはツアーバスの中でDVDを１回観ただけでしたから、歌詞を映すプロンプターをにらめっこしながらカラオケ状態でした。それに比べ、この“1992年コスタメサ公演”では、数日前から準備ができ、２日間のリハーサルもできたのです（それでも短いですが）。“11月15日”の「Children Of The Grave」では入りを間違えたりもしますが、基本的に曲をしっかりと把握し、自慢のハイトーンをどう活かすかまで準備されているのがよく分かる。イアン・ギランやグレン・ヒューズでさえ、苦心していたロニー時代の難曲を軽々とこなし、バージョンアップまでする歌いっぷりは本当に見事です。
また、セットリストもポイント。実は、リハーサルでロブのSABBATHファン気質が爆発したのか、「Symptom Of The Universe」「Into The Void」など、長らく演奏していなかった曲も取り上げられることになりました。“元祖スラッシュ・メタル”とも言われる「Symptom Of The Universe」が鋼鉄神の声で聴けるのも最高！ですが、こうした曲は“CROSS PURPOSES TOUR 1994”でも演奏されるようにもなった。この共演は、単なるスポットというだけではなく、後のSABBATH本体にも影響していく重要なショウなのです。また、本番では実現しませんでしたが、ロブは「トニー・マーティンの曲もやろう」と提案したそう。いやはや、この人は一体どこまで熱心なSABBATHファンなのでしょうか。
最後のディスク３には、「11月15日」に実現した“オジー最後のパフォーマンス（にはなりませんでしたが）”として、オリジナルBLACK SABBATHの再結成ステージを収録しています。こちらも、今までのマスターよりも遙かに長く、約５分に及ぶ前説からオジーが３人を紹介するシーンも収録。これがまた、“ついに伝説の復活！”のムード満点で、観客も「凄いものを見ているんだ……」という大熱狂。その中で始まる重厚極まる「Black Sabbath」……その後のオリジナルSABBATHの活躍も知っている今聴いても、圧倒的な空気感・重量感です。口笛も絶叫も乱れ飛んでいながら、オジーの歌い出しと共にピタッと止んで大合唱に変わる。オフィシャル映像にもなっているシーンですが、客席録音ならではの別次元スペクタクルなのです。

ファストソングを激メタルに、様式美をヒロイックに、ドゥームサウンドを人間離れした妖しさで歌うロブ。かの鋼鉄神は、その後もFIGHTやトリビュート盤、そして“2004年カムデン公演”でSABBATHナンバーを歌っていますが、ベスト・パフォーマンスは間違いなく“1992年コスタメサ公演”です。BLACK SABBATHが解散ツアーを表明し、ロブの喉にも陰りが見える現在では、このベストを更新することはもうないでしょう。
