’70年代のオリジナルBLACK SABBATHにとって最後のスタジオ作品となった「NEVER SAY DIE！」に伴う’78年ツアーからは、公式ビデオ作品の「NEVER SAY DIE！」を筆頭に、放送用素材を用いたサウンドボード音源や、優れたオーディエンス録音など、多くの優良なライヴ・ソースが知られています。しかしこれらの多くがイギリスやアメリカでのツアーに集中しており、’78年ヨーロッパツアーにおけるアイテムは種類が限られていますが、本作「OFFENBACH 1978」は、当時のヨーロッパにおけるSABBATHライヴのムードを良好なサウンドで伝えてくれます。

本作は’78年10月に短期間だけ、主にドイツをサーキットしたヨーロッパツアーより、10月11日のオッフェンバッハ公演を、鮮度に優れたオーディエンス・マスターを元に音盤化したものです。ライヴ前半、特に「Symptom Of The Universe」ではマスターに起因する音のふらつきがみられますが、音のダイレクト感は素晴らしく、各パートの分離感も良好です。リマスター工程ではノイズを除去するとともにピッチも正しく調整しており、聴き手はオリジナル後期のヘヴィでメタリックな演奏を、正しい音像で迫力たっぷりに満喫する事が出来ます。

この’78年はバンドの母体が形成されてからちょうど10年目に当たり、「NEVER SAY DIE！」ツアーは”10th Anniversary World Tour”と銘打たれ、イギリスやアメリカで大規模なツアーを行っています。すでにオジーはバンドから（一時的とはいえ）離脱しているなど、メンバー同士の関係も決して良好とは言えなくなっていましたが、本ライヴで聴けるバンドのパフォーマンス、そしてオーディエンスの熱気は凄まじいものがあり、’70年代初期にも通じるこのムードが本作最大の特徴となっています。開演前の大きな”サバス！”コールを受けてスタートする「Symptom Of The Universe」の狂乱に、「Snowblind」のダウナーなグルーヴ（曲名をコールした際、オジーが”One for the nose”と、コカインを連想させる危ないMCをしている場面も要注意！）、「War Pigs」演奏前の大興奮する観客の盛り上がりなどを聴けば、誰もが「やっぱりどんな時でもオリジナルSABBATHにはマジックがある」と唸らされるでしょう。会場のファンが挙げる熱気に応えるように、この日はオジーやアイオミが終始エネルギッシュなパフォーマンスを聴かせており、当時の新作からチョイスされた「Never Say Die」・「Shock Wave」もエネルギッシュな演奏を聴かせます。オーディエンスの熱気とバンドのパワーが作用しあった「Black Sabbath」は絶品のテイクです！
ディスク2冒頭の「Dirty Women」からは、ドラムソロやギターソロなどジャム演奏パートを経て、「Electric Funeral」や「Iron Man」を含む長大なメドレーが繰り広げられます。’70年代初期の「Wicked World」や、中期の「Sabbra Cadabra」の流れを汲むメドレー構成は全部で35分の大ボリューム。ギターソロから発展したジャムパートでは「Sabbath Bloody Sabbath」のリフ部分もバンド全体で演奏されており、バンド10周年の総決算にふさわしい演奏となっています。ライヴのハイライトを飾る「Children Of The Grave」や「Paranoid」は、湧き上がる会場の手拍子が素晴らしいムードを演出しており、ショウエンドまで最高のテンションでライヴを楽しませてくれます。
ライヴの終了後も注目すべき場面が続きます。ショウエンドではこの当時アウトロS.E.として使用された「TECHNICAL Ecstasy」収録曲の「She’s Gone」がしっかりと確認できるのです。残念ながら1分弱ででフェイドしてしまいますが、この形でのアウトロが明瞭に確認できる音源は現時点でも希少です。

同年アメリカツアーでの放送用サウンドボード音源や優良オーディエンス・ソースを「入門編」とするなら、本録音はさらに一歩踏み込んだ「中級編」。当時のライヴをより深く、マニアックな側面から楽しませてくれるでしょう。1978年のヨーロッパ・ツアーを代表する一枚として、本作はSABBATHマニアにとって欠かせない一本と断言できます。
