In 1971, a treasured master of California, which had not been known until now, unearthed two species at the same time! Of course, it will be released urgently with a permanent storage press CD !!
The excavated this time were two original cassettes by California recorder Robert Rich. This work is an excellent audience recording of the second of them, “September 25, 1971 Long Beach Performance”. Both of the two works released at the same time this week are “1971”, but the timing is off by about 7 months, and this work is the first act of “MASTER OF REALITY Tour”. Let’s check the position of the show while looking back on the schedule at that time.

The “PARANOID Tour” until April 1971 will be released at the same time as “LA FORUM 1971 (Zodiac 431)”, and here we have summarized the overall picture of the “MASTER OF REALITY Tour”. After this, May 1972 was devoted to the production of “VOL.4”, and the tour resumed from the end of June. “VOL.4” is known as an album with many experiments such as the first self-produced / US recording / keyboard introduction, but it is also a new frontier in the sense of “the first album made in an environment separated from the tour”. That’s why.
Quiet talk break. Speaking of the masterpiece of “MASTER OF REALITY Tour” where there is no sound board, it is the daimyo board “BEGGARS’BANQUET DANCE 1971 (Zodiac 316)”, but the long beach performance of this work is different about two months later. Leg. It was the 6th performance of “North America # 2”. And this is the first time I can hear this show. The simultaneous release of “L.A. FORUM 1971” had already been recorded separately, but this is a completely premiere show that no one has ever heard, with no recordings so far.
The sound that conveys such a show is also exquisite. Like “L.A. FORUM 1971”, this work is also digitized directly from Robert Rich’s Omoto Master, but the sound tendency is quite different. While “L.A. FORUM 1971” was a powerful sound, this work is a beautiful recording with excellent balance and neat sound. It’s not as close as “L.A. FORUM 1971”, but it’s not far away. If the sister work is a sound board-class zero-distance feeling, this work is an FM sound board-class that reproduces the mood of the concert venue. A clear core jumps into your ears while a slight hall sound puts the whole together. It is a masterpiece recording for more people, and it is a new masterpiece that is as good as that masterpiece “BEGGARS’BANQUET DANCE 1971”.
The beautiful sound is a gorgeous full show with the completed “SABBATH sound”. BLACK SABBATH established its individuality with the initial 3 sheets, and went into the experiment from “VOL.4”, but this work is the concentration reduction of the initial 3 sheets. 《５月『VOL.4』制作》

1971年４月までの“PARANOID Tour”は同時リリースとなる『L.A. FORUM 1971（Zodiac 431）』を参照いただくとして、ここでは“MASTER OF REALITY Tour”の全体像をまとめました。この後、1972年５月が『VOL.4』制作に充てられ、６月末からツアー再開。『VOL.4』は初のセルフ・プロデュース／米国録音／鍵盤導入など、実験の多いアルバムとして知られていますが、「ツアーと切り離された環境で作った初のアルバム」という意味でも新境地だったわけです。
閑話休題。サウンドボードが存在しない“MASTER OF REALITY Tour”の代表作と言えば、大名盤『BEGGARS’ BANQUET DANCE 1971（Zodiac 316）』となるわけですが、本作のロングビーチ公演はその約２ヶ月後の別レッグ。「北米#2」の６公演目にあたるコンサートでした。そして、このショウを聴けるのは本作が初。同時リリースの『L.A. FORUM 1971』は別録音の既発が存在しましたが、こちらはこれまで一切の記録がなく、誰も聴いた事のなかった完全初公開なショウなのです。
そんなショウを伝えるサウンドがまた、絶品。本作も『L.A. FORUM 1971』と同様にロバート・リッチの大元マスターからダイレクトにデジタル化されているわけですが、サウンドの傾向はかなり違う。『L.A. FORUM 1971』がド迫力で押しまくるサウンドだったのに対し、本作はバランスに優れ、鳴りも端正な美録音。『L.A. FORUM 1971』ほどド密着なわけではありませんが、決して遠いわけでもない。喩えるなら姉妹作が卓直結サウンドボード級のゼロ距離感だとすれば、本作はコンサート会場のムードを再現したFMサウンドボード級といったところでしょうか。ほんのりとしたホール鳴りが全体をまとめつつ、クッキリした芯が耳元に飛び込んでくる。より万人向けの名録音であり、あの大名盤『BEGGARS’ BANQUET DANCE 1971』に負けずとも劣らない新名盤なのです。
その端麗サウンドで描かれるのは、“SABBATHサウンド”も完成した絢爛のフルショウ。BLACK SABBATHは初期３枚で個性を確立していき、『VOL.4』から実験へと踏みこんでいったわけですが、本作はその初期３枚の濃縮還元なのです。ここでそのセットも整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。初期３枚からは後の再結成時代でも大量に演奏されているわけですが、その大代表曲がズラリ。現在の感覚からすると名刺曲「Black Sabbath」がセット落ちしているのが信じられませんが、これも新曲が次々と生まれていった当時なればこそ（ちなみに次に「Black Sabbath」が復活するのは“SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH Tour”も後半に差し掛かった1974年２月）です。
そして、そのセットを紡ぐ塩素婦野凄まじい事！　デビュー当時から卓越していたBLACK SABBATHではありますが、それでも場数を踏んだからこその成長度は目を見張る。４人の呼吸感はきっかけナシでもビシッとシンクロする域に達し、それが一気にほぐれて触れず我火花を散らすジャムも素晴らしい。そして何より、世界を股にかけるようになったスケールの大きなグルーヴ感もぶっとく強烈。成熟しつつ、慣れが出てこない一番美味しいアンサンブルを極上体験できてしまうライヴアルバムなのです。
