ご存じの通り、THE BLACK CROWESはオフィシャル・サイトでライヴ音源をダウンロード販売しておりますが、そのラインナップは「1996年」「1997年」の次が「2001年」になっており、本作の“1998年”は扱っていない。“ジミー・ペイジとの合体前”というミッシングリンクを繋ぐ１本なのです。
流出サウンドボードと言ってもクオリティはピンキリなのですが、本作は思いっきり“ピン”の方。ネットにもないオリジナル・マスターを独自入手したのですが、そこから流れ出たサウンドは極端なまでに極上。もちろん、リリース用録音ではないのでミックスは荒々しいのですが、それは欠点ではなく美点。思いっきり生々しい演奏が、現場そのもののバランスで脳ミソにねじ込まれる。通常、卓直結サウンドボードは“臨場感”に欠けるものですが、本作はそうではない……いえ、むしろ“臨場感”さえも超えた“存在感”まで感じるのです。まるで頭がマイクロフォンになったようにクリス・ロビンソンの息づかいが感じられ、脳ミソの中にバンドがいるかのようにリッチ・ロビンソンのギターが鳴る。まるでTHE BLACK CROWESと同じ部屋に立ち、周囲を囲まれて演奏されているような埋没感なのです。
しかも、その部屋にいるのは自分だけではない。卓直結サウンドボードにも関わらず、オーディエンスの熱い熱狂がしっかりと聞こえる。普通のライヴアルバムのようにミックスされているわけではなく、バンド側のマイクに届いた声援のようなのですが、それがあまりに熱く、近いためにえらく自然なのです。そうですね、自分を中心にTHE BLACK CROWESが周りを囲み、そのすぐ外縁をさらにファンが囲んでいる。実際の現場がどういう配置だったかは分かりませんが、本作から聞こえる音世界は、そういうものなのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるショウがまた、猛烈に熱い。それまでの作品をひとまとめにしたボックス『SHO’ NUFF』に伴うツアーだったわけですが、当時の最新作は『THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM』からはゼロですし、『AMORICA』からも３曲止まり。その一方で、２大名作『SHAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER』『THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION』からは５曲ずつがたっぷりと演奏され、さらに制作を控えた新作『BY YOUR SIDE』からの名曲「Kickin’ My Heart Around」を早くも演奏している。まさに“原点回帰”に向かわんとするバンドの姿勢がストレートに滲むライヴアルバムなのです。

残念ながら「Wiser Time」エンディングと「Jealous Again」前半にカットがあるためにショウの完全体でこそありませんが、それ以外は当日ショウの全曲の一部始終を捉えきった１枚です。ジミー・ペイジもノックアウトされ、パートナーに選んだTHE BLACK CROWES。その本質を脳ミソ直撃サウンドで描く激烈ステレオサウンドボード・アルバムの大傑作。今週末、あなたのお手元にお届けいたします。
