The last coupling tour of the century “FACE TO FACE 2009/2010” for the first time in 6 years. Introducing a masterpiece live album that conveys the scene.
It is “July 30, 2009 Philadelphia performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is an excellent audience recording that vacuum-packed the whole story. There are four major ultimate tours where British and American pianomen line up: “1994/1995 (North America)” “1998 (overseas)” “2001-2003 (North America)” “2009/2010 (North America)” However, it ended when Billy said “I will not do it anymore” in 2012. The “2009/2010 (North America)” edition is the last, though it has been a revival for a long time. First, let’s look back on the schedule and confirm the position of the show.

This is the whole picture of “FACE TO FACE 2009/2010”. Initially scheduled to end in 2009, Elton postponed due to an E. coli infection. Some dates have been carried over to 2010. The Philadelphia performance of this work is just before the 2009 tour is interrupted. It was the 6th performance of “North America # 3”.
This work recorded at such a show is an exquisite audience that is lustrous and fresh. Since it was recorded from the back stand seat, it doesn’t feel like a “sound board”, but it doesn’t feel far away. The secret is probably the venue. The site, “Citizens Bank Park,” is an outdoor stadium that is also the home of the MLB Philadelphia Phillies. Therefore, unlike the dome, there is no ceiling or wall that reflects the sound, and the sound does not wrap around. And if it becomes a stadium, PAs will be set up in various places in the venue so that it can be heard clearly even in distant seats. It’s a guess from here, but maybe this work was recorded towards a remote PA. Only the playing sound and singing voice are strangely clear and vivid without being bothered by the hustle and bustle of the surroundings like the front seats. Still, the balance that gives a bird’s-eye view of the enthusiasm of the venue … The sound of such a distant seat environment comes to mind.
The glorious masterpieces left by both males are drawn with such a neat and easy-to-listen sound. The show composition is “Co-starring # 1 (4 songs)-> Elton (11 songs)-> Billy (11 songs)-> Co-starring # 2 (7 songs)”. prize.

… And it looks like this. Although there are some spicy songs such as Elton’s “Madman Across The Water” and Billy’s “Highway To Hell (AC / DC cover)”, it is exactly the exchange of hit songs that both men do not give up. You can’t hear from the other person at the coupling show. Billy said that the reason for stopping “FACE TO FACE” was “the set is restricted”, but it is a fierce rush full of deadly songs so rich.
It may not be possible to expect the freedom of a solo performance, but it is a live album where you can enjoy a treasure trove of rich masterpieces with energetic performances because both males stand side by side. Tokuno’s 3-disc set is a full set of both and the co-starring part is also vacuum packed. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

６年ぶりにして最後となった世紀のカップリング・ツアー“FACE TO FACE 2009/2010”。その現場を伝える大傑作ライヴアルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2009年７月30日フィラデルフィア公演」。その一部始終を真空パックした絶品オーディエンス録音です。英米のピアノマンが並び立つ究極ツアーは大きく４つ「1994/1995年（北米）」「1998年（海外）」「2001-2003年（北米）」「2009/2010年（北米）」が行われたわけですが、2012年にビリーが「もうやらない」と発言したことで終了。「2009/2010年（北米）」篇は久々の復活でありながら最後となりました。まずはそのスケジュールを振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが“FACE TO FACE 2009/2010”の全体像。当初は2009年内に終わる予定でしたが、エルトンが大腸菌の感染症を患って延期。一部日程が2010年に持ち越されました。本作のフィラデルフィア公演は、そんな2009年のツアーが中断する直前。「北米#3」の６公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、艶やかで瑞々しい絶品オーディエンス。後方スタンド席から録音されているだけに「まるでサウンドボード」と喧伝するようなド密着感ではないのですが、かと言って遠くも感じない。その秘訣は、恐らく会場。現場となった“シチズンズ・バンク・パーク”は、MLBフィラデルフィア・フィリーズのホームでもある屋外球場。そのため音を反射する天井も壁もなく、ドームと違って音が回り込まないのです。そしてスタジアムともなれば、会場各所にＰＡが設置され、遠くの席でもクリアに聴けるように設定される。ここからは推測ですが、恐らく本作は遠隔ＰＡに向かって録音されたのではないでしょうか。最前席のような周囲の喧騒に煩わされることなく、演奏音と歌声だけが妙にクッキリと鮮やか。それでいて会場の熱狂を俯瞰するようなバランス……そんな遠方席の環境が目に浮かぶサウンドなのです。
そんな端正で聴きやすいサウンドで描かれるのは、両雄が残してきた栄光の名曲群。ショウ構成は「共演#1（４曲）→エルトン（11曲）→ビリー（11曲）→共演#2（７曲）」となっていますが、ここでは両者の持ち歌で整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。エルトンの「Madman Across The Water」やビリーの「Highway To Hell（AC/DCカバー）」など、スパイス的な曲も少々交えてはいるものの、まさに両雄が一歩も譲らぬヒット曲の応酬。カップリング・ショウで相手より聞きお取りするわけには行かないのでしょう。ビリーは“FACE TO FACE”を止める理由として「セットが制約される」と語っていましたが、それほどまでに濃厚な必殺曲だらけの猛ラッシュなのです。
ソロ公演のような自由は望めないかも知れませんが、両雄並び立つからこそ気合いの入った演奏で濃厚な名曲の宝庫を楽しめるライヴアルバムです。両者のフルセットと共演パートも丸ごと真空パックした特濃の３枚組。どうぞ、心ゆくまで存分にご堪能ください。
