In addition, Paul Simon’s cover “Still Crazy After All These Years” and the Christmas song “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” have been shown.
Moreover, the performance of spinning such an ultimate set is also intense. Probably because of the triumphant return performance on the last day of the tour, the momentum to not worry about tomorrow is wonderful, and the vocals in excellent condition do not feel tired from the tour. そんな本作に収められているのは「1977年12月11日ユニオンデール公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。このショウは古くからFM放送で知られ、そのエアチェックが数多くの既発を生み出してきた大定番。さらに、その一部が30周年盤『THE STRANGER』のボーナスCDに採用されたこともありました。本作はそんな大定番サウンドボードの最高峰にあたるもの。2004年に発掘されたFM放送や公式盤とは異なる完全盤なのです。その内容に触れる前に、まずはショウのポジション。ブレイクスルーを果たした1977年のスケジュールから振り返ってみましょう。

これが1977年のビリー・ジョエル。１年を通してツアーを行っていますが、アルバム『ストレンジャー』やシングル『Just the Way You Are』がヒットしたのは９月以降。いわゆる“THE STRANGER TOUR”というのは「北米#4」だけでり、本作のユニオンデール公演は、その最終日にあたる地元の凱旋コンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、従来のエアチェック盤よりさらにクリアでステレオ感も増強された極上サウンドボード。先述のように実際に公式盤にも採用されているだけあって、収録もミックスも完璧です。実のところ『THE STRANGER』の30周年盤ではわずか５曲しか収録されていなかったのですが、このまま公式化できる……いえ、今からでもぜひリリースすべき銘品なのです。
そんな準公式サウンドで描かれるのは、大名盤『THE STRANGER』を軸とした究極のフルショウ。実は30周年盤『THE STRANGER』にはユニオンデール公演（５曲入り）のライヴCDだけでなく、カーネギーホール（北米#3）の12曲入りCDも付属しているのですが、両者を合計してもなお本作の方が遙かに長尺。ここで比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『THE STRANGER』から「Everybody Has a Dream」以外の全曲が演奏されているだけでなく、『TURNSTILES』も「All You Wanna Do Is Dance」「James」以外の全部。さらには『PIANO MAN』からも半分……と、ファンが望む名曲はほぼほぼ網羅されている。さらにポール・サイモンのカバー「Still Crazy After All These Years」やクリスマス・ソング「Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas」まで披露されているのです。
しかも、そんな究極セットを紡ぐパフォーマンスも強烈。ツアー最終日の凱旋公演のせいか、明日の心配をしない勢いが素晴らしく、絶好調のヴォーカルにはツアー疲れなどまるで感じられない。いきなり「The Stranger」から始まるのもビリーらしく、ライヴで聴くあの口笛は鳥肌もの。キーボード＆サックスのイントロ付き「Movin’ Out」やサックスの2ndソロがないタイトな「Just The Way You Are」、ドラム・イントロ付きの「Only The Good Die Young」等々、このツアーならではのアレンジもそこかしこで聴ける。さらにジャズ／フュージョン系ギタリストのスティーヴ・カーンも参加したアンコールでのファンキーな演奏も聴きどころです。
2004年の発掘から時間も経っているのでUxbridgeレーベルからのご紹介となりましたが、それこそ『THE STRANGER』そのものと同等以上の超名盤です。まさに文化遺産以外の何物でもない極上サウンドボード・アルバム。どうぞ、この機会に思う存分お楽しみください。
