Before making a break on the album “THE STRANGER”, Billy Joel was actively broadcasting his live on the radio. Not only him, but American artists who made their debut in the 70’s generally liked to broadcast live on the radio and saw it as part of their promotion. Regarding Billy, the stage from 1976 to 1977 was actively broadcast on the radio, for example, the bottom line in 1976 and the Nassau Coliseum broadcast that was realized after the release of “THE STRANGER” were both of this era. In the same 1977, the stage at an important time just before the recording of the previous album started was also broadcast on the radio, and the live at the university auditorium in Brookville, Long Island, Billy’s hometown, got on the radio wave. Of course, because it was a stereo sound board recording, it had been released as a CD-R “GREEN VALE 1977” from the TRIAL label in the past, and because it is a radio sound source with ambiguous rights, “GREEN VALE NEW YORK (MAY 6TH 1977)” The current situation is that even a gray zone CD called “CW POST UNIVERSITY)” has been released.
This time, a limited press CD promotion release from the ZION label was realized based on “GREEN VALE 1977” which was the best master that surpassed the gray zone title. Regarding the place name, Brookville became the correct answer by this research.

Regarding the tour that was done before Billy started recording “THE STRANGER”, Carnegie Hall in June was released in the legacy edition of the same album officially, but there are several to fit on one CD. It was a special day for the orchestra to participate because the song was cut and it was a stage at the historic venue called Carnegie Hall.
In that respect, Brookville was not only broadcasting all the songs of the day, but also because he was capturing the normal stage only for Billy’s band, which was extremely morale ahead of the release of the historical masterpiece, with the best sound quality. Moreover, like Carnegie Hall, two new songs before recording have already been performed, but first of all, “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” was a live premiere as Billy mentioned. 同じ77年でも先のアルバムのレコーディングが始まる直前という重要な時期のステージもまたラジオから放送されており、ビリーの地元であるロング・アイランドのブルックビルにある大学の講堂でのライブが電波に乗りました。もちろんステレオ・サウンドボード録音ということから過去にもTRIALレーベルからCD-R「GREENVALE 1977」としてリリースされたことがありましたし、権利関係のあいまいなラジオ音源ということから「GREENVALE NEW YORK (MAY 6TH 1977 CW POST UNIVERSITY)」というグレーゾーンCDまでリリースされているのが現状。
今回はそのグレーゾーン・タイトルを凌ぐベストマスターであった「GREENVALE 1977」を元にZIONレーベルからの限定プレスCD昇格リリースが実現。地名に関しては今回のリサーチによってブルックビルが正解となりました。

ビリーが「THE STRANGER」のレコーディングに入る前に行われたツアーに関してはオフィシャルでも同アルバムのレガシーエディションの中で6月のカーネギー・ホールがリリースされましたが、そちらはCD一枚に収めるべくいくつかの曲がカットされており、なおかつカーネギー・ホールという由緒ある会場でのステージだったことからオーケストラを参加させた特殊な一日でもありました。
その点ブルックビルは当日の全曲が放送されたというのはもちろん、歴史的名盤のリリースを控えてこの上なく士気の高まったビリーのバンドだけの通常ステージを最高の音質で捉えていたことから、今も価値がまったく色褪せていない。むしろプレスCDでのリリースが渇望されていたと言っていいかもしれません。

オフィシャルのカーネギー・ホールは21世紀を迎えて最新技術でリミックスとリマスターが施された優等生的な音質でありましたが、同じステレオ・サウンドボードでもリアタイで放送され、何よりラジオならではの生々しい質感に溢れた音質が魅力的。当時ノリにノッていたビリーとバンドの勢い溢れたサウンドを余すところなく捉えてくれているという点では、オフィシャルのカーネギー・ホールすら凌駕するレベル。放送時にアナウンスが入ってしまったと推測される「Travelin’ Prayer」の間奏におけるフェイドイン・アウトは今回も変わりませんが、それが微塵なことに思えてくるほど魅力的な音質と演奏。
しかもカーネギー・ホールと同様、既にレコーディング前の新曲二曲が演奏されている訳ですが、まず「Scenes from an Italian Restaurant」はビリーが触れたように何とライブ初演。既に目まぐるしく曲調の変わる展開が完成しています。さらにクラシック「素顔のままで」に関してはカーネギー・ホールと同様に「THE STRANGER」のバージョンとはリズムが違うアレンジ完成前の状態で演奏されており、なおかつカーネギー・ホールと違ってオーケストラのないバンドだけのシンプルな演奏が新鮮。
これら二曲がリリースどころか録音される前という状況ながらも電波に乗せられた点が非常に貴重ですし、それでいて素晴らしいステレオ・サウンドボードで楽しめる。
この時期のビリーのライブのさらなる魅力は、何と言っても「THE STRANGER」以前の彼の曲を畳みかけるように演奏してみせるライブ後半。ビリー・バンドの立役者であったドラマーのリバティー・デヴィートを中心としたキレのいい演奏がこれまた最高の音質で堪能できる。中でも「Worse Comes to Worst」は音源として残されている数少ないライブ演奏であり、その出来がまた素晴らしい。この曲や「Weekend Song」といった初期のビリーらしいワイルドなロックが冴えわたる曲の雪崩れ込むよう展開と、一方で洗練された「THE STRANGER」の足音が聞こえる、ブレイク直前ならでは…というこの時期しかありえない最高の内容。永遠の名曲「素顔のままで」の素顔がステレオ・サウンドボードで記された名音源！
