An isolated guitarist, Barney Tome, who died of pneumonia on March 17, 2019. The best live album to meet in the last year is coming up.
It is “November 25, 2018 Edinburgh performance” that is included in such this work. It is the act of “THE FINAL FLING UK TOUR” which was Bernie’s last tour. Last year there was also a release of the posthumous work “SHADOWLAND”, so first let’s check the last course of Bernie on the schedule.

This is Bernie’s 2018. It was also news that I reunited with Ozzie for the first time in 36 years in “Sweden ROCK Festival” in June, but the activity is still my pace. We released “SHADOWLAND” in November, and immediately after that we performed “THE FINAL FLING UK TOUR” for all eight performances. Edinburgh performance of this work is its fourth performance. It was the fifth concert from Barney’s last show.
This work that contained such a show is an outstanding audience recording recorded on the masterpiece “Schoeps mk4”. Anyway, the overwhelming thing is the guitar sound. There is no sense of distance if the core is on, and the details are also delicate. You can feel the nuances of a little guitar and the arming that raises the beat. Of course, the best is not just the guitar. The wave of the buzzing bass is also delicate, and the drums are super real. The vocals are only slightly off, but it’s more like I just picked up the balance of the on-site PA rather than the distance of the recording. The site is a bar with a stage rather than a club, but it is a live album of the end that seems to be reminiscent of its closed room feeling and handmade feeling.
The sound is drawn in a wide range that overlooks Bernie’s career. It begins with “Wild West” of “ELECTRIC GYPSIES”, and snow falls into the new song “Come The Revolution”. Suddenly, if I thought that I connected the new and old, GILLAN’s “No Easy Way” jumped out, and to the solo debut “Turn Out The Lights” …. As we move back and forth in the times, we will send out repertoires of various times from solo to GILLAN and GUY MCCOY TORME.
Such a show gets hot at a dash in the second half. From the area that emits two consecutive “Trouble” and “New Orleans” of the GILLAN era. So far, although a hot cheer was sent to each song and song, from here the audience (this is the mood that looks better than calling the audience) also sings out aloud, and “Aiyaiyaya …” The bar is heating up more and more. The show ends once here, but encore is great again. Ozzy Osbourne’s “Mr. Crowley”, BLACK SAB BATH’s “Paranoid” two rounds. Barney’s record can not be affirmed because there are not many records, but it may have been a good time to reunite with Ozzy mentioned above. Crazy crying with distinctive arming while keyboardless “Mr. Crowley” is abolished. Even though the guitar is so terrific, the place where it sings while blowing out involuntarily seems to be the end of the day and the best. And special guests from “Paranoid” also participate. Play “No Easy Way” again. In fact, the posthumous work “SHADOWLAND” is produced using the cloud founding “PLEDGE MUSIC”, and it seems that fans and Bernie have co-starred as their investment benefits. These two songs are not the result of the performance, but even such a service suits the mood full of intimacy.

Anyway, the mood is so great that I want to call out to Barney, who is lively, “What’s up to you?” After this, after completing five stages, he became pneumonia when the dawn of 2019, and became a man who never returned. This work is a super best live album that can be felt close to even Barney Tome of such the last year. There is no more than this to record a detached guitarist in the all-carrier masterpiece group. Please, please bite it carefully.

2019年３月17日に肺炎で世を去った孤高のギタリスト、バーニー・トーメ。その最晩年に立ち会う極上ライヴアルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に収められているのは「2018年11月25日エディンバラ公演」。バーニーにとって最後のツアーだった“THE FINAL FLING UK TOUR”の一幕です。昨年は遺作『SHADOWLAND』のリリースもありましたので、まずはバーニー最後の歩みを日程で確かめてみましょう。

これがバーニーの2018年。６月の“SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL”ではオジーと36年ぶりに再会したことがニュースにもなりましたが、その後も活動はマイペース。11月に『SHADOWLAND』をリリースし、その直後に全８公演の“THE FINAL FLING UK TOUR”を行いました。本作のエディンバラ公演は、その４公演目。バーニーの最終公演から５番目となるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを封じ込めた本作は、名機「Schoeps mk4」で録音された傑出オーディエンス録音。とにかく圧倒的なのがギター・サウンド。芯もオンなら距離感もなく、ディテールも繊細。ちょっとしたギターのニュアンスも、唸りを上げるアーミングも耳元に感じられるのです。もちろん、極上なのはギターだけではない。ブンブンうねるベースのヴァイヴも波形が目に浮かぶ繊細さですし、ドラムも超リアル。ヴォーカルのみややオフ気味なのですが、それも録音の距離感というよりは現場ＰＡのバランスをそのまま拾った感じ。現場はクラブと言うよりは、ステージ付きのバーなのですが、その密室感、手作り感にむせ返るような場末のライヴアルバムなのです。
そのサウンドで描かれるのは、バーニーのキャリアを一望する幅広さ。『ELECTRIC GYPSIES』の「Wild West」で始まり、新曲「Come The Revolution」へ雪崩れ込む。いきなり新旧を繋いだと思ったらGILLANの「No Easy Way」が飛び出し、ソロ・デビュー作の「Turn Out The Lights」へ……。時代を大きく行き来しつつ、ソロ、GILLAN、GUY MCCOY TORMEまで様々な時代のレパートリーを繰り出していくのです。
そんなショウが一気に熱くなるのが後半。GILLAN時代の「Trouble」「New Orleans」を２連発する辺りから。それまでも１曲１曲に熱い声援が送られていたものの、ここからはお客さん（観客と呼ぶよりこの方が似合うムードなのです）も口々に歌い出し、「アイヤイヤイヤ……」と掛け合ってはどんどんバーが加熱していく。ここでショウは一度終わりますが、アンコールがまた凄い。オジー・オズボーンの「Mr. Crowley」に、BLACK SABBATHの「Paranoid」の２連発。バーニーの記録は決して多くはないので断言はできませんが、先述したオジーとの再会もキッカケだったのかも知れません。キーボード・レスながら独特のアーミングで狂い泣く「Mr. Crowley」は凄絶。それだけギターが凄まじいのに、思わず吹き出しながら歌ってしまうところがまた場末らしくて最高です。そして、「Paranoid」からは特別ゲストも参加。再度「No Easy Way」も演奏します。実は、遺作『SHADOWLAND』はクラウド・ファウンディング“PLEDGE MUSIC”を活用して製作されており、その出資特典としてファンとバーニーが共演したようです。この２曲は演奏の出来云々ではないのですが、そんなサービスまでもが親密感溢れるムードに似合っているのです。

とにかく生々しく、熱演を披露したバーニーに「一杯どうだい？」と声を掛けたくなるほどのムードが素晴らしすぎる。この後、５回のステージをこなした彼は、2019年が明けると肺炎になり、そのまま帰らぬ人となりました。本作はそんな最晩年のバーニー・トーメに寄り添い、気配さえ間近に感じられる超極上ライヴアルバムなのです。オールキャリアの名曲群で孤高のギタリストを偲ぶのにこれ以上ない１本。どうぞ、じっくりと噛みしめてください。
