今回の「RUBBER SOUL」センターミックスの紹介文で触れたように、2000年代に活躍したファン・レーベルの雄Dr.EbbettsはLPの丁寧なCD化（CD-R）に留まらず、独自のステレオ・ミックスもいくつか発表しています。その一つが例の「RUBBER SOUL」だったのですが、この他にビートルズのファースト・アルバム「PLEASE PLEASE ME」のセンターミックスも試みていて、それは過去にギフトとしてリリース済でした。そして今週のギフトとして登場するのがセカンド・アルバム「WITH THE BEATLES」のセンターミックス。これら初期二枚のアルバムは2トラックのステレオ・レコーダーで録音されたことから、ボーカルをセンターに配置したミックスを作るのは実質的に不可能。それを21世紀初頭に何とかして作り上げていたのがDr.Ebbettsバージョンでした。
先のギフトにて聞かれた方も多いかと思われますが、「PLEASE PLEASE～」のセンターミックスは元の録音状態と当時の音源ソフトの限界が相まって、随所で不自然な仕上がりが見受けられました。ボーカル・パートをセンターに寄せようとすると音像全体がモノラル化しそうになってしまうのです。そのせいで演奏パートになると急にステレオ感が広がるという現象もまた不自然極まりない。
Dr.Ebbettsはこの仕上がりを反省したのでしょう。「WITH THE BEATLES」においてはモノラル化を極力緩和させようとした涙ぐましい仕上がりとなっています。特に「Roll Over Beethove」や「Hold Me Tight」といった右チャンネルで手拍子が鳴り続ける曲を聞くと、それもボーカルと一緒に真ん中へ吸い寄せられてしまうのではなく、まだ右側で鳴り続けているのがこれまた涙ぐましい。
もっとも曲によってはモノラル化してしまいそうな危うさも否めず、それが2トラック・ステレオの定位を変える限界なのは事実。それでも全体の仕上がりは確実に「PLEASE PLEASE ME」のセンターミックス以上であり、2000年代前半の音楽ソフトを使ってここまでのセンター感を演出できたことに驚かされるのではないでしょうか。これもまたヘッドフォンで聞くとその効果がたっぷりと楽しめるユニークなファン制作のリミックス・バージョンです。
