「PLEASE PLEASE ME」のスペクトラル・シリーズの時と同様に、今回も「WITH THE BEATLES」のアルバム版センターミックス・バージョンも一緒にリリースいたします。「WITH THE BEATLES SESSIONS: IN SPECTRAL STEREO」も当然ながらレコーディング・セッションの再現をコンセプトとしたアルバム。特に「Hold Me Tight」においてマスターテイクの誕生からボーカルの重ね撮りまでドキュメントされている場面など、マニアからすると一番美味しいところである一方、初心者には「同じ曲が何度も繰り返される」という状態ゆえにハードに感じられてしまうのも当然かと。そこでアルバム単位で完成バージョンのセンターミックスをまとめあげたのがこちら。
あくまでセッションをドキュメントするのが目的であったことから今回の「WITH THE BEATLES SESSIONS: IN SPECTRAL STEREO」はLord Reith作「YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD BE GLAD!」の内容を見直し、そこに収録されていたアルバムバージョンのセンターミックスをいくつか省いています。「It Won’t Be Long」と「Don’t Bother Me」がそれに該当するのですが、こちらは通常のアルバムの内容を再現するというコンセプトに沿ってそれらを採用。これによってセッション中心の「WITH THE BEATLES SESSIONS: IN SPECTRAL STEREO」に対し、こちらはあくまでアルバム本体のセンターミックス・バージョンという極めて解りやすい内容でまとめられました。上記2曲のセンターミックスバージョンに関しては本CDでのみ聴けるというわけです。

「PLEASE PLEASE ME」の時と同様、今回もLord Reithが最新のテクノロジーを駆使して作り上げたセンターミックスの仕上がりは驚異的なレベル。ボーカルと演奏が左右にくっきり分かれたステレオは以前からマニアが改善を試みており、懐かしのDr. Ebbettsのバージョンなどが有名でしょう。ところがDr. Ebbetts版は21世紀初頭におけるテクノロジーの限界が露呈されており、ボーカルをセンターに振った弊害で演奏の分離感が薄まり、むしろモノラルっぽくなってしまう。そのせいで歌のない箇所において元の定位に戻る際の違和感が凄まじく、単に「音が揺れてしまう」致命的な不自然さがあったのです。

しかし今回のバージョンではボーカルがセンターに移りつつも、それでいて演奏が左右に分離しているという見事な仕上がりに聞き惚れてしまう。ロバート・フリーマン撮影（この8日に亡くなられました、合掌）による四人の顔のジャケットで有名なこのアルバムが遂に、しかも自然な仕上がりのセンターミックスで聞けるようになったインパクトは相当なもの。

特にアルバムB面の「You Really Got A Hold On Me」や「Devil in Her Heart」といった曲における見事な分離と完成度の高さがマニアを唸らせるのでは。唯一、アルバムを締めくくった「Money (That’s What I Want)」だけはアルバム制作時にステレオの左右でそれぞれに完成された二種類のモノ・ミックスを振り分けた結果、ボーカルが真ん中でありながら演奏は分離しているという、いわばセンターミックスの先駆けと呼べるような手の込んだ作業で作られていましたので、今回も同曲だけは通常バージョンからの流用となっています。とにかく驚異的な仕上がりが圧巻なセンターミックス。今まで聞き慣れてきた名盤が新鮮に聞こえること間違いなし。今回もヘッドフォンでじっくりとお楽しみください！
