Frost, who is famous for interviews with politicians and celebrities in various fields, is famous for our Beatles fan, it is remembered as a moderator of the program which performed “Hey Jude”. Frost interviewed the Beatles for the first time in 1964 as part of the interview with the rising new British music phenomenon, “A HARD DAY’S NIGHT” while shooting. Four years later, the Beatles appeared on the crown program hosted by Frost and put audiences in the studio and played.

Recording was performed on September 4, 1968, at the Twickenham shooting studio which was also used in get back sessions later. The studio set was said to have been set over three days. And it is finally recording on September 4, 1968, at Twickenham Studios. As I wrote earlier, “Hey Jude” has been found to have recorded at least 3 takes. 【1968年7月29日EMIスタジオ】
まず最初に収録されているのは1968年7月29日EMIスタジオにおける「Hey Jude」のテイク1から3である。 テイク1は非常にシンプルなテイクで、後半のコーラス部分はポールがアドリブ・ヴォーカルで通している。 連打するピアノにポールの迫力あるヴォーカルがたまらない。エンディングはフェイド・アウトではなく、アコースティック・ギターをガチャガチャかき鳴らしておわるという面白いもの。 最後にジョンの声が聞こえるので、これはジョンの手によるものだろう。 テイク2はいくぶん最終テイクを意識したもので、ポールは落ち着いて抑制した歌い方をしている。後半のコーラスはまだ入らず、ポールがひとりでここでもアドリブ・ヴォーカルを加えているが、 テイク1に比べるとおとなしめの感じである。 テイク3は短い収録ながら、今回の初登場音源である。しかも非常に興味深いテイクであり、ビートルズ・ファンにはたまらないものとなっている。 まずカウントを入れているのがジョンなのである「トゥ～スリ～・・・」。そしておもむろにポールが「ヘイ・ジュ～」と歌い出す。ところがすぐにジョンが「オ～、ポール」といって演奏を中断させてしまう。 そしてジョンとポールがジョークを言い合って笑い出している。そこへドラムセットに座ったリンゴが割り込んできて「Do I love you～」と調子っぱずれで歌い出し、ジョンにとめられている「リンゴ、やめてくれよ」。 そこへ冷静なジョージが「さ、もう一回やろうよ」。ポール「ああ、わかった」・・・笑いあり、ジョークあり、この短いトラックにビートルズの人間関係、和やかな雰囲気が凝縮されている、そんな初登場音源である。

【1968年9月4日トゥイッケンナム・スタジオ】
そして、いよいよ1968年9月4日、トゥイッケンナム・スタジオにおける収録である。 先に書いたように「Hey Jude」は少なくとも3テイク収録されたことが判明している。本作ではその未編集の3テイクを全て収録している。 すべて異なるヴォーカルであるが、似て聞こえるのは、何も同じ曲だからという理由からだけでなく、曲が完成しており、これ以外ないという歌いまわし、そしてポールがいかにプロであったかの表れであろう。

続いて収録されているのは、番組のテーマ「By George! It’s The David Frost Theme」である。前述の通りジョージ・マーティンが作曲した番組のオリジナル・テーマである。 こちらも実際に放送されたもの以外にいくつかテイクが存在する。まずウォーミング・アップは収録前の軽い演奏である。そしてテイク1はギターに合わせてジョンが歌っている。ジョージはギターを練習しているようだ。 フロストが紹介を述べている間もジョージがギターを練習している音が入っている。テイク2はジョンのカウントで始まり、テイク1よりはテンポを落とした演奏となっている。 ところが途中でジョンが悪ふざけをしだすところが面白い。最後には「It’s Now Or Never」のメロディを叫び出す。テイク3はジョンのカウントで初めてすぐに中断。フロストがポールの立ち位置を指示している。 テイク4はポールがカウントをとる。ピアノとギターが絡み、最も完成度が高い。フロストがビートルズを紹介した後、ジョンはふざけて今度は「You’re My Sunshine」を歌っている。

続いて「Revolution」の収録である。テイク1は「Revolution テイク１」という声がかかるものの、ジョンが歌い出すのは、ここでも「It’s Now Or Never」であり、厳密には「Revolution」は歌っていない。そしてテイク2がお馴染みの「Revolution」である。

【1968/1969】
最後は1968年にレコーディングされた「Lady Madonna」と1969年にレコーディングされた「Because」のアウトテイクを収録している。トラック17のAlternate Mixはオフライン・モニターミックスで、今回の初登場音源である。トラック18はリード・ギターを重ねる前のバージョン。トラック19の「Because」はジョンがひとりでアムステルダムのホテルで録音したデモ音源。トラック20はテイク不明で、ジョンのカウントで始まるが、すぐに中断、スタジオでリンゴが何やらしゃべっていたり、口笛が聞こえたりと、楽しそうなビートルズのレコーディング風景の一コマである。

Mクローデルの最新作は、初登場音源を含む、1968年デヴィッド・フロスト・ショウのセッション音源を現存する全てを収録したものをメインに、「Hey Jude」のセッションを収録したものになる。名曲の唯一のライヴ・バージョンとして貴重な出演となったフロスト・ショウの放送以外のアウトテイクも網羅したタイトルである。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。
