「RUBBER SOUL」はアルバム・タイトルやアートワークが初めて英米で共通した画期的な一枚となったのですが、まだまだ一筋縄ではいきません。アメリカでは前のアルバム「HELP!」が映画に使用された曲だけでまとめられており、イギリス盤のB面に収録されていた曲が1965年夏の時点ではアメリカのアルバムには収録されていません。何と「Yesterday」に至っては先にシングルでリリースしてしまうという強権をキャピトルが発動させていたのです。
こうした状況の煽りを受け、アメリカ盤「RUBBER SOUL」には「HELP!」のB面収録曲が混成された独自の編集盤と化してしまいました。何が凄いって「RUBBER SOUL」なのに一曲目が「Drive My Car」から始まらないのです。代わりにオープニング・ナンバーとして「HELP!」から「I’ve Just Seen A Face」が配置されるという大胆さ。おまけに「HELP!」B面曲の中でも異色の落ち着きを払ったサウンドの曲だったことから「Drive My～」の代わりに配置されても意外と違和感がなく、序盤がアコースティックで落ち着いた雰囲気の曲から始まるという展開をみせていました。
こうした「HELP!」B面曲の挿入によってアルバムの内容が変わってしまったのですが、逆に「RUBBER SOUL」本体からも「Drive My～」だけでなくジョージの「If I Needed Someone」などが次作のキャピトル編集盤「YESTERDAY AND TODAY」用の人質となってしまったことで「全12曲」かつ「前のアルバムの曲を汲み入れた」独自のアルバムへと生まれ変わってしまったのです。もはや「RUBBER SOUL」の皮を被った別のアルバムと呼んでも差し障りないほど。
このアメリカ盤は今から十年前にオフィシャルのCD化が実現していますが、今回は非常にレアなオープンリール・テープでリリースされていたバージョンからの収録。カセット普及以前にアメリカでレコード以外のフォーマットとしてリリースされていたのがオープンリール。この方式でビートルズほとんどのアルバムがリリースされていたのですが、テープの収録時間の関係から、オープンリールでは独自に曲順が変えられていたのです。
「RUBBER SOUL」に関してはLPのB面の5曲目に収録されていた「Wait」がテープのA面に収録されるという配置換えが行われており、ただでさえ内容の異なるアメリカ盤アルバムの内容がさらに変えられたというのだから面白い。音質に関しても現在のリマスターCDとはまったく違った、いかにも「テープ然」としたアナログチックで繊細さを帯びたもの。そして何よりも「RUBBER SOUL」という名の下でほとんど別のアルバムと化してしまったアメリカ盤オープンリール・バージョンのユニークさを体感してください。
