その証拠に本アルバムが1987年に初めてCD化された際、ジョージ・マーティンは新たなステレオ・ミックスを作り、現在のリマスターCDにもこちらのミックスが採用されました。しかし87年版ステレオ・ミックスに関してもオリジナルほどではないにせよ、相変わらずメイン・ボーカル・トラックが右寄りに仕上げられており、その違和感や古臭さを指摘するマニアが後を絶えません。「The Word」などは87年のミックスで演奏やバックコーラスの分離が格段に良くなったのに、ジョンのメイン・ボーカルは相変わらず右に追いやられていました。

パソコンでの音楽編集が容易となった21世紀に入ると、ファンの間でこの状態を解消させようとした独自のリミックス作業がこぞって行われるようになりました。例えば今週ギフトアイテムで「WITH THE BEATLES」のボーカル・センターミックス・バージョンがリリースされるDr.Ebbettsも既に2000年代前半の段階で「RUBBER SOUL」のセンターミックス・バージョンを試していましたが、その仕上がりはまだまだのレベル。
特にNorwegian Wood」のような曲に顕著だったのですが、ボーカルの定位を真ん中に寄せようとすれば左右の演奏も釣られてしまい、結果としてモノラルっぽい状態へと堕ちてしまったのです。つまりDr.Ebbettsのセンターミックスは歌が始まると演奏がモノラル化してしまうというジレンマが随所にありました。それは当時の音源ソフトの限界であったとも言えるでしょう。

それから十年以上の歳月が経過して音源ソフトの性能も飛躍的に向上。さらには「BEATLES: ROCKBAND」のようなマニアにとってリミックス向けと呼べる音源まで登場。そうした状況を受けて近年、新たな「RUBBER SOUL」のセンターミックス・バージョンが作られています。手がけたのは今回の「COMPLETE RECORDING SESSIONS VOL.4」の大本になった音源のベスト・バージョンや「LAST LACQUERS」の作者としておなじみMasterJedi。ここに挙げたようなビートルズ各音源の集大成を作る達人の印象が強く、彼がひっそりと「RUBBER SOUL」のセンターミックスを作っていたことを見過ごしていた人も多いのではないでしょうか。
その仕上がりは予想以上の素晴らしさ。使用機材や時代も違って比較にならないのですが、先に挙げたDr.Ebbetts版センターミックスよりもはるかに自然なセンターミックス感を演出しているのです。特にヘッドフォンで聞いてみれば効果は抜群。「Nowhere Man」のように「YELLOW SUMARINE SONGTRACK」のミックスにイコライズを加えたような曲もありますが、全体的には驚くほどのセンターミックスへと仕上がりました。現在のリマスターCDと聞き比べればその差や音像の違いは歴然。もちろん厳格な意味でのリミックスではなく、あくまでのファンが作り上げたもの。そこで今回はリーズナブルな価格でありながら、それでいて限定のプレスCDでのリリースとなります。これほどの仕上がりであれば、むしろプレスCDが相応しい！
