“THE BEATLES” is a white album called up to be the masterpiece of the Beatles that is now also called Sargent Pepper and Abbey Road. これは一重に1968年前半のインド滞在時、マハリシの下で修業する以外の時間を使って大量の曲が作られたことの証でした。結果的に二枚組となったホワイト・アルバムですが、このデモを聞くと、当初からビートルズはアルバムを二枚組にすることが念頭にあったように思えてなりません。それどころかアルバムに収録されなかった曲までもがこの時点で録音されているのだから、彼らの創作意欲が頂点に達した時期といっても過言ではないでしょう。それらレコーディングが行われなかった曲はビートルズ解散後に各人のソロアルバムで日の目を見ており、そうした楽曲がビートルズ時代の録音で聞かれるという点でも価値の高いものでした。

キンファウンス・デモからいくつかの曲は現在「ANTHOLOGY 3」に収録されており、CDならず音楽配信などでも簡単に聞くことが出来るようになりました。そこに収録されたバージョンはステレオで収録されており、このデモが4トラック・レコーダーを使った本格的な録音であることが明らかにもなったのです。ジョン・レノンを中心としてメンバー各人が簡易録音にてデモを残した音源はいくつも存在しますが、そのような本格的な機材を使い、なおかつメンバー全員が録音に参加したホーム・デモと言う点においても、キンファウンス音源の価値は非常に高い。しかし、この音源の存在が知られるようになったのは「ANTHOLOGY 3」よりずっと前のこと。
1988年にジョンが遺した音源をラジオにて公開した「THE LOST LENNON TAPES」においてキンファウンス・デモは目玉音源の一つとなり、「Revolution」のデモを皮切りとして番組の中で小出しに放送されていたものです。その音源はジョンがモノラルにコピーして自身が所有していたものが元となっていました。「THE LOST LENNON TAPES」の放送が後半に差しかかった頃、放送に携わっていた人物の一人が元になっていた音源のコピーを流出させ、これが長年に渡ってキンファウンス・デモを収録したアイテムの礎となったのです。

ところでこの音源、元々がジョン所有のコピーだったところへ、さらなるダビングを重ねて流通したことからヒスノイズが持病のような状態となっていました。初めてこの音源の全長版をリリースしたイエロー・ドッグの「UNSURPASSED DEMOS」などはそのヒスをねじ伏せるかのようなイコライズを施していたのですが、それでも内容の素晴らしさから名盤扱いとされたものです。さらには、よりダビングを重ねられたテープを元にした「THE KITANUS DEMO」（原題のまま）や曲順がめちゃくちゃな「KINFAUNS」と言ったアイテムもありました。
その後、初めてジョン所有のモノ・テープを実際の曲順通りに収録したビゴトーンの「FROM KINFAUNS TO CHAOS」が決定盤とされましたが、それでもなおジェネ落ちコピー感が否めず、結局は今から10年近く前にファンが結集して作られたパープル・チックのホワイト・アルバム・デラックス・エディションに収録されたものがベストとなっていました。その後デラックス・エディションを丸ごと取り込んだアイテムが作られたり、さらには昨年も「KINFAUNS DEMOS (2016 Remaster Rev A)」というファンによるリマスター・バージョンがネット上に登場したものの、それもあくまでパープル・チックのバージョンをイコライズしたに過ぎません。今年の上半期に登場した「ULTIMATE HOME DEMOS COLLECTION VOL.5」に収録されたキンファウンス・パートしても同様でした。
ところが今回は遂にパープル・チック（以下PCと称します）よりもロウ・ジェネレーションな状態のコピーを入手。これはイコライズがどうのこうのと言うレベルではなく、一聴して解るほどのアッパー版として世界中のマニアの注目を集めることでしょう。
PC版と比べてさらに一皮むけたクリアネス、それでいてあくまでナチュラルな味わいはイコライズから生み出せるものではありません。しかもこのデモはほとんどがアコースティック・ギターを使って演奏されていることから、音質が向上したことによって、よりナチュラルな音色が際立っている。それどころかPC版ですら少なからずイコライズが施されていたことが今回のバージョンを聞くと痛感させられることでしょう。

アルバムの開始前のデモということで、アレンジや歌詞の違いが随所に見られるのがこの音源の大きな魅力の一つ。中でもジョンの「Revolution」は後のシングル・バージョンやホワイト・アルバム収録の「Revolution 1」とも違う軽快な演奏はアコースティックなデモ録音ならではのもの。さらにジョンの「Jealous Guy」の原曲である「Child Of Nature」、ジョージがここでの録音から14年後にソロ・アルバム「GONE TROPPO」でリリースした「Circles」といった貴重な演奏のオンパレード。そして極めつけはジョージがアップルと契約したアーティスト、ジャッキー・ロマックスに送った「Sour Milk Sea」のビートルズによる演奏が聞けるということ。それに何よりも、これらの貴重な演奏は未だにジョン所有のモノラル音源でしか聞かれないものなのです。
先にも触れた音質の向上によって、演奏が始まる前の呟きはもちろん、演奏の最中にまで入るメンバーの会話がよりはっきりと聞こえてしまうのもアッパー版ならではというものでしょう。それほどすっきりとクリアーでナチュラルな状態が素晴らしい。キンファウンス・デモのモノラル・バージョンのベストが限定のプレスCDにてリリースされます。ホワイト・アルバムのアコースティック・バージョンとしてもじっくり楽しめます！
