早い時期からビートルズの正史を残す企画があるという噂は囁かれていたし、「THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD」とドキュメンタリーのタイトルまで予定されていながら、結局お蔵入りとなったりもした。未発表曲や未発表バージョンを集めた「SESSIONS」はリリース直前まで進んだが、やはりお蔵入りとなっていた。事がビートルズなだけに安易な企画は許されず、メンバーを含め慎重にプロジェクトが進行していく過程において、このように幾度となく企画が上がっては消えを繰り返してきた。しかし、それらはけして無駄な作業ではなかったのである。未発表曲、スタジオ・アウトテイク、正史となるドキュメンタリー、それまで泡沫（うたかた）の様に生まれては消えしていた企画が全てを集約したプロジェクトとして実現した、それが90年代半ばに実現した「アンソロジー」だったのである。

けして良好な関係で解散したわけではないビートルズであったが、なぜ90年代のこの時期に一気に話が進んだのであろうか。ポールは1990年と1993年のワールド・ツアーを経たばかりであった。リンゴはオールスター・バンドが始まって数年が経過していた。ジョージは1987年にカムバック的なヒットを出し、1991年には日本のみながらツアーを行なっている。長らく離れていたステージにそれぞれが戻って来た時期というのは偶然ではないだろう。ミュージシャンとしては少なからず上下関係にあったメンバー関係が、ソロ活動の成功を自信として真の意味で対等になったという点がまず挙げられる。また各メンバーが50歳を過ぎて人生のまとめに入りたい心境になったのかもしれない。恐らく生きていたら真っ先に反対したであろうジョンが鬼籍に入っていた事も大きい。そして最終的には最も困難だったポールとジョージの関係が修復された事で、それまで微動だにしなかった大きい岩が動いたといっても過言ではない。この点に関しては、「WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU」のインストをCDに収録するなど、ポールが大幅に譲歩した形跡が見られる（もっともバーターで「ELEANOR RIGBY」のインストを収録する意地を見せているが）。

【FREE AS A BIRD】

便宜上FIRST VERSIONとされているバージョンがディスク1のトラック3からトラック11に相当する。トラック4はこのジョンのシンプルなデモにベーシック・トラックのみを重ねたもので、元のピアノは消去され、さらにジョンのヴォーカルに加工が施されているのがわかる。ジョンのデモの段階では未完成だったミドル・パートは新たに加えられ、ポールとジョージがそれぞれヴォーカルをわけあっている。おそらく仮入れなのかポールとジョージのヴォーカルは生声そのままで収録されており、録音された時点でのジョンと他のメンバーとの年齢差を感じさせるものである。コーラスは入っておらず、最後のコーダ部分も加えられていない事から、これが極初期のバージョンである事が伺える。トラック7はギターとコーラスが加えられているが、ミドル・パートでは歌が入っておらず、ギター・リフも最終的に不採用となったもので、リリース・バージョンでは聴くことが出来ないものである。曲の終わりのウクレレによるコーダ部分は別録音されたものを後から編集で繋げたものだが、ここではその部分のみを3バージョン収録している。話声からウクレレはジョージの手によるものだという事がわかる。

続いてトラック12から19までがSECOND VERSIONである。当然ながら基本となるジョンのデモ部分は共通しているが、ポールとジョージのヴォーカルは別テイクとなっている。特にトラック17と18はジョージのヴォーカルが全く異なる別テイクであるのは歌いまわしの違いからも明らかで非常に興味深い。このSECOND VERSIONは最終的にはリリースされなかったが、きちんと完成形として最終ミックスまで行なわれている。それがトラック19である。

【REAL LOVE】
25年ぶりの新曲の第2弾としてリリースされたのが「REAL LOVE」である。レコーディングは「FREE AS A BIRD」と同じようにジョンのデモを加工し、他のメンバーを重ねる事により完成に至っている。この曲自体はリリース前からジョンの未発表曲としてはかなり有名なもので、1989年の映画「イマジン」のサウンドトラックに既にデモ・バージョンが収録されていた。この曲が新曲の第2弾に選ばれた時点で、マニアには他にもうマテリアルがないのだなと思わせるに充分な選曲であった。しかし実際に聴いてみると、元のデモをあのような最終形まで作り上げたジェフの手腕は見事としか言いようがない。また「FREE AS A BIRD」と異なる点は、ジョンのみがメイン・ヴォーカルであり、ポールとジョージはコーラスに徹している点であろう。

「FREE AS A BIRD」は2テイクしかデモ音源が残っていないが、「REAL LOVE」はジョン自身が思い入れがあったのだろう、かなり多くのデモ・テイクが残されている。当初歌詞から「GIRLS AND BOYS」というタイトルで呼ばれていたが、ディスク1のトラック23から26では「REAL LIFE」というタイトルになっている。「REAL LIFE」は死後に発表された「I’M STEPPING OUT」と「REAL LOVE」とを混ぜ合わせたような曲で、後にここから ”「REAL LOVE」的な部分” だけを分離させて流用したのがわかる音源である。ディスク2のトラック1から4までは同じデモ音源でありながら、曲は完全に「REAL LOVE」として完成している。ここまで完成されていては、ポールとジョージも手の加えようがなく、ピアノのフレーズを含め、このままメロディを活かしたのは頷ける。

トラック5からジョンひとりのデモではなく、メンバー全員による1994年のスタジオ・セッションに移行する。個人的には、キーを上げたせいでジョンの声が不自然に高くなっているのが気になっているが、これもビートルズの選択なのだから尊重すべきであろう。トラック5から10までは便宜上FIRST VERSIONとクレジットされている別バージョンである。トラック5はチェンバロを主体としたベーシック・トラック。トラック6はイントロのチェンバロが全く別物であり、ギターも最終的に採用されなかったものである。リリース・バージョンを聴き慣れた耳に違いは鮮明で、かなり異なる印象を受けるテイクである。どのような意図で録音されたのか不明だが、トラック10はゴドレイ&クレームのケヴィン・ゴドレイが歌っているヴァージョンである。ケヴィン・ゴドレイは「REAL LOVE」のプロモーション・フィルムの監督なので、映像制作の仮当てに自分で録音したものなのだろう。

トラック11から14はSECOND VERSIONである。同じジョンのデモ音源から作られているので基本的には同じなのだが、インストルメンタルの部分で大きな違いがあり、これもまた興味深いものである。トラック11はジョンのデモにベーシック・トラックを重ねたもので、本来ギター・ソロが重ねられる部分はまだ入っておらず、チェンバロ・ソロといった趣になっている。トラック12ではギターが重ねられており、完成形と遜色ない出来にまで仕上がっている。注目すべきはそのギターで、今まで聴いた事のないボツになったものである。確かに唐突にフレーズを合いの手的に入れる音色は蛇足で、最終的にカットされたのは正しい選択であろう。

【NOW AND THEN と GROW OLD WITH ME】
アンソロジーのCDはVol.1からVol3まで時代を三つにわけてリリースされたが、Vol.1とVol.2にそれぞれ目玉として新曲が収録されたのに対し、Vol.3にはついぞ新曲は収録されなかった。ビートルズの25年ぶりの新曲は「FREE AS A BIRD」と「REAL LOVE」の2曲のみということになる。もちろん第三の新曲も検討されてはいた。その候補に挙がっていたのが「NOW AND THEN」と「GROW OLD WITH ME」の2曲である。「NOW AND THEN」は終始入っているジ～というノイズを理由として採用を見送られたと伝えられている。「GROW OLD WITH ME」がなぜ見送られたかは不明だが、既に『MILK AND HONEY』に収録されているものが世間に定着していた事が大きな理由ではないだろうか。

【THREETLES SESSION】
映像版のアンソロジーを初めて見て感慨深かったのはポールとジョージとリンゴが同じフレームで一同に会していたショットではないだろうか。特にポールとジョージが同じ場所で一緒に映っているシーンには、それまでの経緯を考慮すると感涙ものであった。本作のディスク2の最後には、アンソロジー用の絵を撮るためであろう、1994年6月23日にジョージの自宅フライア・パークに3人が集まり、邸内のスタジオにて3人でセッションをした時の音源を収録している。ジョージがビートルズに加入するきっかけとなった「RAUNCHY」から始まり、想い出深い古い曲を次々と演奏している。「BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY」はポールがメイン・ヴォーカルで、コーラスをジョージがつけている、何とも胸が熱くなる貴重なテイクである。続いて場所をスタジオから庭園に移し、ウクレレのみを手に3人で演奏をしている様子が収録されている。

【THE EVOLUTION OF “FREE AS A BIRD” and “REAL LOVE”】
本作は、1995年に発表されたビートルズの25年ぶりの新曲、「FREE AS A BIRD」と「REAL LOVE」の2曲の焦点を当て、そのメイキングをデモから順に起こしていく音源を収録している。また第三の新曲候補であった2曲に関しても収録し、その後ドキュメンタリー用に3人が集って行なったセッション音源も収録している。安易に再結成するには存在が大き過ぎるビートルズであったが、アンソロジー・プロジェクトは、この時このタイミングでしか成し得なかったジョンを交えての意味のある「再結成」であったと言えるのではないか。特にこの新曲2曲は、我々の知るかつてのビートルズではなかったが、新しいビートルズの姿ではあった。既に発表から20年以上経過し、これもまたビートルズの歴史の一部となってしまっている。きっと将来60年代と同様にビートルズの正史として語り継がれるであろう1995年に一度だけ結実した4人によるビートルズの新曲。メンバーが半分になり高齢化した現在、もはや2度と実現しないであろうビートルズ最後の新曲を、本作で堪能して頂きたいと思う。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
