In 1983, at “THE BEATLES AT ABBEY ROAD” held to commemorate the renovation of Abbey Road Studios, the Beatles outtakes and sessions were released for the first time, and the LP that recorded the event from the audience was treated as a masterpiece. It was as much as it was done. John Barrett, a staff member of Abbey Road Studios, was in charge of researching the sound source to make this event a reality. Also, the event was commissioned by a British DJ named Roger Scott, who did the work.
Barrett, who was a staff member of the studio, said that there was no problem, and Scott had a unique opportunity to look into the Beatles’ treasure, so he worked with bad guys from the beginning. First of all, it was said that he had stolen the work itself of having Barrett listen to the Beatles session tape. Sure enough, the recording here will be leaked as a “monitor mix” later. Also, during this work, a cassette copy of the sound source that Barrett compiled for in-house viewing surprised enthusiasts around the world in 1999.

As a result, the “THE BEATLES AT ABBEY ROAD” event was a great success, and Scott, who gained the trust of this event, now wrote the radio special “SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND –A HISTORY OF THE BEATLES YEARS 1962”. -1970 ”is planned. It is permissible to touch the session tape again in the name of using conversations during the Beatles recording in the program (Barrett, who was already lying on the bed, was not involved in this work). In “THE COMPLETE ROGER SCOTT TAPES DEFINITIVE EDITION” released this time, there was a part that extracted only the conversation before actually starting “Run For Your Life”, and there must have been a cause. However, Scott, who had been wicked from the beginning, couldn’t do it alone, and he was confused by the annoyance and copied the session scenery itself.
However, he wasn’t stupid enough to leak the sound source he had obtained immediately, and a year after his radio special was broadcast, it was leaked that he sold the sound source to a wealthy Beatles collector for a considerable amount of money. It was the opportunity. Then, starting with the session scenery of “Strawberry Fields Forever”, the sound source leaked by Scott will gradually see the light of day.

For us, the biggest benefit we received from Scott’s sound source would be that revolutionary CD “ULTRA RARE TRAX”. Recording with the highest sound quality suitable for the media of CD, which was emerging at that time, fundamentally overturned the concept of bootleg. The president of the German label TSP, which released it, bought the sound source from the collector for an amount of more than 1 million yen, but since the previous title recorded big sales, the source of the sound source fee should have been affordable. ..
After that, the Beatles session that Scott leaked as the collector “sold” the sound source to various vendors will be released in various forms. Of course, the sound source also passed to the United States, Ken of TMOQ released Condor and John Wizard released the “BACK TRACK” series one after another, but these American items are worried about the slow pitch. At that time, it was still in the era of cassette copying, so by the time the sound source reached the United States, the phenomenon of branching deterioration had occurred.
After that, a European label calling itself Yellow Dog started a series that recorded Scott’s sound source in session units with “UNSURPASSED MASTERS”, which is also popular as “Ansapa” and shakes the world. At this time, which was a golden age for many enthusiasts, everyone was overwhelmed without knowing that one DJ had leaked those sound sources. Ironically, however, Scott, who was the person himself, died at the same time as Ansapa’s appearance, at the age of 46.

It was “ULTRA RARE TRAX” that first made his sound source appear in this way, but it is probably Yellow Dog’s “Ansapa” that spread it in a form that is more faithful to the sound source. However, it is regrettable that it was originally a cassette copy, and that it was firmly equalized to eliminate hiss noise, reflecting the historical background of the time. Yellow Dog himself was aware of this, and later re-released a long version without equalization in the “ULTIMATE COLLECTION” series, which has been regarded as the best since then.
Furthermore, unlike John Barrett’s sound source, which had been organized since its appearance, Scott’s sound source, which had a branched copy, took time to reveal the whole picture. Thanks to that, although it was a very famous sound source, the culmination of them did not appear. Master Jedi confronted this huge sound source. It is the origin of this release that he can be called the goal of releasing the compilation and overhaul of high quality sound sources by then, and the compilation of Scott sound sources that enthusiasts all over the world have been waiting for “GREAT SCOTT! IT’S. .. THE BEATLES “.
Master Jedi’s outstanding skill is really wonderful here. By giving top priority to recording in the most natural version, the old “Ansapa” is of course not selected. Of course, Condor and the “BACK TRACK” series are out of the question. On the other hand, “ULTRA RARE TRAX” fits his glasses, and “How Do You Do It”, which decorates the beginning of a huge set, is adopted from there. It reminds us of the greatness of our ancestors.
However, the version of “ULTIMATE COLLECTION” mentioned earlier occupies most of the parts. Based on this, the pieces that were cut there are patched with thorough research from other items. It’s been a lot of work so far, but Master Jedi’s commitment is even more thorough. The best example is Take 9 of “I Feel Fine”. When it was officially released later, there was a noise just before the feedback started, but Scott started copying after this, so that was missing. However, Master Jedi purposely patched that part from the UK version file of “Akaban” to make up for these few seconds. As a bonus, there is no sense of discomfort in the connection.

In this way, it was a natural and longest version, and in addition, it was a finish that finely adjusted the dropout that occurred at the stage of cassette copying, so as soon as Master Jedi released in 2015, the press CD item was released. It became the definitive edition of. For a while, he had a solid reputation as a compilation of Scott’s sound sources, but he still had some regrets. So in 2019, he released a patch file that summarizes the parts he modified. This enabled the 2015 version of the updater. The latest definitive edition including this one will be released on the press CD this time.
Even if he wasn’t him, the fact that the sound source copy had ended after the interlude at the end of the “A Hard Day’s Night” session was a major barrier to restoration. If you connect the completed version to the session sound source, you will feel uncomfortable. However, by processing and connecting a new mix made with the Blu-ray version of the movie of the same name, the finish that can be heard without discomfort is finally realized. At the end, it is literally complete by connecting the longest ending recording mix made for “THE MAKING OF’A HARD DAY’S NIGHT”.
“All You Need Is Love” is a level that is even more surprising or boring. The LP version of “ULTRA RARE TRACKS VOL.3” was adopted for this moment in order to capture the last curl sound that was always cut in the CD item. And although there is no difference in editing of Disc-5, the whole equalization has been redone. This seems to have corrected 2015, when I was sometimes worried about the grainy feel of hiss noise rather than natural. It’s not a big difference, but it does reduce the graininess.

The session scenery of this ultimate set, the first two discs, is “PLEASE PLEASE ME SESSIONS IN SPECTRAL STEREO”, “FROM ME TO YOU SESSION IN SPECTRAL STEREO” and “WITH THE BEATLES SESSIONS IN SPECIAL STEREO” that have been released so far. However, they are a mix that Lord Reith modified around the vocal position. Therefore, the difference from the original recording state here is big, and it is rather fun to hear and compare as a mix difference.
And now it is difficult to obtain the file of “GREAT SCOTT! IT’S … THE BEATLES” as well as the file of the patch for 2019 because the site where it was released has collapsed. Incorporating the updated version, the final version of the culmination of Master Jedi’s soul is finally released on a limited press CD! ..

★ Upgrade points

MasterJedi’s remastering is limited to dropout correction, pitch correction, channel offset correction, EQ processing to clarify treble, excessive sound pressure level increase and hiss noise removal (noise reduction processing). Because it is mastered with a policy that does not do anything at all, it puts together in the best condition that makes the best use of the original sound source.
Moreover, because we are thoroughly researching the best sources, especially in this Scott sound source, 28 kinds of sources are combined to create the best source.

★ There is no doubt that these two titles, including John Barrett, will continue to be permanent preservation versions of the Beatles outtake collection. First of all, it is the definitive 2 titles that are recommended as the first outtake introductory edition.

1983年、アビー・ロード・スタジオの改築記念に行われた「THE BEATLES AT ABBEY ROAD」では初めてビートルズのアウトテイクやセッションの模様が公開されたうえ、イベントを客席からオーディエンス録音したLPが名盤扱いされたほどでした。このイベントを実現させるにあたって音源のリサーチを担当したのがアビー・ロード・スタジオのスタッフであったジョン・バレット。またイベントの進行役を依頼されたのがロジャー・スコットというイギリスのDJであり、彼らによって作業が行われたのです。
スタジオのスタッフだったバレットは問題ないとして、スコットの方はビートルズの秘宝を覗くことができるまたとない機会ということから、当初から悪だくみと共に作業を行っていました。まず、バレットにビートルズのセッションテープを聞かせてもらう作業そのものを盗み録りしていたという。案の定ここでの録音が後に「モニターミックス」として流出することになります。また、この作業の中でバレットが社内観覧用にまとめた音源のカセット・コピーが1999年に世界中のマニアをあっと言わせたのでした。

結果「THE BEATLES AT ABBEY ROAD」イベントは大成功、これによって信頼を得たスコットが今度は自身によるビートルズの歴史をつづったラジオ・スペシャル「SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND – A HISTORY OF THE BEATLES YEARS 1962-1970」を企画。そのプログラムの中でビートルズのレコーディング中の会話などを使う名目で再度セッションテープに触れることが許され(既に病床に伏せていたバレットはこの作業に関与していません)ます。今回リリースされる「THE COMPLETE ROGER SCOTT TAPES DEFINITIVE EDITION」には実際に「Run For Your Life」を始める前の会話だけを抜き出したパートがあり、確かに大義名分はあったのでしょう。しかし当初から邪心を抱いていたスコットがそれだけで済ませるはずもなく、どさくさに紛れてセッション風景そのものをコピーしていたのです。
とはいえ彼も入手していた音源をすぐにリークさせるほど愚かではなく、彼のラジオ・スペシャルが放送された一年後、裕福なビートルズ・コレクターにかなりの金額で音源を売ったのが流出のきっかけでした。それから「Strawberry Fields Forever」のセッション風景を皮切りとして、徐々にスコットがリークさせた音源が日の目を見ることになるのです。

我々にとってスコット音源から受けた最大の恩恵、それはあの革命的なCD「ULTRA RARE TRAX」でしょう。当時台頭してきたCDというメディアに相応しい極上音質での収録はブートレグの概念を根本的に覆すものでした。リリースしたドイツのレーベル、TSPの社長はコレクターから100万円を超す金額で音源を買い取ったのとこのですが、先のタイトルがビッグセールスを記録したことで音源代の元は余裕で取れたはず。
その後もコレクターが様々な業者に音源を「また売り」したことでスコットが流出させたビートルズのセッションが様々な形でリリースされることになります。当然アメリカにも音源が渡り、TMOQのケンはコンドル、ジョン・ウィザードは「BACK TRACK」シリーズを相次いでリリースさせたものの、こうしたアメリカ勢のアイテムはピッチの遅さが気になります。当時はまだカセット・コピーの時代でしたので、アメリカに音源が到達する頃になると枝分かれの劣化現象が生じていたのでした。
その後、今度はイエロードッグを名乗るヨーロッパのレーベルが「UNSURPASSED MASTERS」でスコットの音源をさらにセッション単位で収録したシリーズをスタート、これもまた「アンサパ」として親しまれ、なおかつ世界を震撼させます。多くのマニアにとって黄金時代といえたこの時期、それらの音源を一人のDJが流出させたことなど知る由もなく、誰もが圧倒されていたものです。ところが皮肉なことに、その張本人であるスコットは正にアンサパが登場したのと時を同じくして46歳という短い生涯を閉じたのでした。

このように彼の音源を最初に登場させたのは「ULTRA RARE TRAX」だったのですが、より音源に忠実な形で広めてくれたのはイエロードッグの「アンサパ」でしょう。しかし元がカセット・コピーであったこと、さらに当時の時代背景を反映し、ヒスノイズを消すべくがっつりイコライズされていた点は惜しまれます。そのことはイエロードッグ自身も気付いており、後に「ULTIMATE COLLECTION」シリーズでイコライズを排したロングバージョンを出し直し、以降はそちらがベストとされてきました。
さらに登場時から音源が整理されていたジョン・バレットの音源と違い小出しにされ、なおかつ枝分かれコピーが存在したスコットの音源は全貌が明らかになるまで時間を要しました。おかげで超有名音源でありながら、それらをまとめた集大成というのが登場しなかったのです。この膨大な音源に立ち向かってくれたのがMasterJedi。それまでにも良質な音源の集大成やオーバーホールを公開してくれた彼の到達点と呼べるのが今回のリリースの元であり、世界中のマニアが待ち望んだスコット音源の集大成「GREAT SCOTT! IT’S… THE BEATLES」でしょう。
ここでMasterJediの卓越した手腕は本当に素晴らしい。もっともナチュラルな状態のバージョンでの収録を最優先としたことで、古の「アンサパ」は当然ながら選考外。もちろんコンドルや「BACK TRACK」シリーズは論外。その反面「ULTRA RARE TRAX」は彼のお眼鏡にかなっており、膨大なセットの冒頭を飾る「How Do You Do It」はそこからの採用。先祖の偉大さを再認識させられます。
とはいえ大半のパートを占めるのは先に触れた「ULTIMATE COLLECTION」のバージョン。これをベースとして、そこではカットされていた断片を他のアイテムから徹底的なリサーチと共にパッチ。ここまででも相当な労作なのですが、MasterJediのこだわりはさらに徹底。その最たる例が「I Feel Fine」のテイク9。後にオフィシャルにリリースされた際はフィードバックが始まる直前の物音が入っていたのですが、スコットはこの後からコピーを開始していたのでそこが欠けていた。ところがMasterJediはこの数秒を補うべく、わざわざ「赤盤」のUK盤ファイルからその部分をパッチ。おまけにつなぎの違和感がまったくない。

このようにナチュラルでしかも最長バージョン、おまけにカセット・コピーの段階で生じたドロップアウトまで緻密にアジャストした仕上がりであったことから、2015年にMasterJediが公開するやいなやプレスCDのアイテムがリリースされるほどの決定版となったのです。しばらくはスコット音源の集大成として確固たる定評を築いてきたのですが、それでもまだ彼には悔いが残る個所があった。そこで2019年、彼が手直しを加えた個所をまとめたパッチのファイルを公表。これによって2015年のバージョンのアップデータが実現しました。今回プレスCDにてリリースされるのはこちらを含めた最新決定版ということになります。
彼でなくとも「A Hard Day’s Night」セッションの終盤テイク9が間奏の後で音源コピーが終わってしまっていたことはレストアの大きな関門となっていました。セッション音源に完成バージョンをつなげばどうしても違和感が生じてしまう。ところが同名の映画のブルーレイ版で作られた新たなミックスを加工してつなげることで、遂に違和感なく聞き通せる仕上がりが実現。とどめに「THE MAKING OF ‘A HARD DAY’S NIGHT」用に作られたエンディング最長収録ミックスをつなげて文字通りのコンプリート。
これ以上に驚かされるというか、もはや飽きれるレベルなのが「All You Need Is Love」。CDアイテムでは常にカットされていた最後のキュルル音まで捉えるべく、わざわざ「ULTRA RARE TRACKS VOL.3」のLPバージョンをこの一瞬の為に採用。そしてDisc-5は編集の違いなどないものの、全体のイコライズがやり直されています。これはナチュラルと言うよりヒスノイズのざらついた感触が時として気になった2015年を補正したのだと思われます。大きな違いではないのですが、確かにざらつき感は緩和されています。

この究極のセット、最初の二枚のディスクのセッション風景はこれまでリリースされてきた「PLEASE PLEASE ME SESSIONS IN SPECTRAL STEREO」、「FROM ME TO YOU SESSION IN SPECTRAL STEREO」そして「WITH THE BEATLES SESSIONS IN SPECIAL STEREO」とダブるのですが、それらはLord Reithがボーカルの位置を中心として手を加えたミックス。よってこちらのオリジナルのレコーディング状態との違いは大きく、むしろミックス違いとして聞き比べるのも一興かと。
そして「GREAT SCOTT! IT’S… THE BEATLES」のファイルは元より、2019年の修正パッチのファイルも公開されていたサイトが潰れてしまったことで入手が困難な現在。アップデータされたバージョンを取り込んでMasterJedi入魂の集大成の最終バージョンが遂に限定プレスCDにてリリース!。

★アップグレード・ポイント

MasterJediのリマスターはドロップアウト箇所の修正、ピッチ修正、チャンネルの片寄り修正、高音域を明瞭にするためのEQ処理の範囲に留め、過度の音圧レベル上げやヒスノイズの除去(ノイズリダクション処理)は一切行わないポリシーでマスタリングしているため、元音源を最大限活かしたベストな状態でまとめ上げてくれています。
