Shea Stadium is a historical video that captures the moment of the Beatles’ glory, but has not yet been released as a live video. In the live history movie “EIGHT DAYS A WEEK”, which was made small in “ANTHOLOGY” and John’s “IMAGINE”, a newly edited version of only the live scene was released after the main story, but unlike the movie. The release as software did not come true, and even the recording as a bonus video did not come true.
Under these circumstances, it was HMC’s “SHEA!” That reduced enthusiasts’ drinking. It is a masterpiece that unearthed a remastered version of video and audio for “ANTHOLOGY” in 1991, and has excellent image quality and sound quality, and has reigned as the definitive version of shared video to this day.

However, it was clear that there was still room for improvement, and after all, the video had stretched vertically. In the Beatles live video, if such a distortion of the screen ratio occurs, the circle of the apple drumhead will not be a perfect circle, so it is easy to understand. Therefore, the screen ratio has been corrected for this release. Of course, if you look at the scene of “Act Naturally” where the whole apple drum kit is featured on the screen, you can see that his drumhead is reflected firmly and perfectly.
Of course, that alone is not a trick. For this release, the audio of the live scene will be replaced with the original sound board recording without overdubbing or re-recording the performance. The mysterious part of the share is that while the story of shooting was organized from the beginning, recording in cooperation with the record company was not proposed for audio, and it was done with the PA out sound board.
If you’re a maniac, you’re probably familiar with the nature of this kind of sound source, but that decision has left a lot of work on the share audio. In addition, there were a number of problems in the recording, and among them, “I Feel Fine”, apple “Act ~” and “Help!” had problems in the recording state itself, and it was in a state where it could not be used as it was. .. Because of this, not only overdubbing but also the performance was re-recorded from scratch.
However, it was ironic that the modification resulted in a sudden increase in the realistic documentability of the original sound board. What was remarkable other than the Beatles scene was that the cheers of the audience were overdubbed until the opening performance. As expected, it shouldn’t have been so exciting before the Beatles appeared (laughs). The sound board sound is more suitable here. Besides, I think it can be called the strongest if the 1991 version of the video is combined with the sound board where you can listen to the realistic performance of the day, including Apple’s “Act Naturally”.

However, this time, with more care, the original TV sound is also recorded as a sub sound. This is based on the audio from the 1979 BBC broadcast version, which became familiar to enthusiasts. The DVD “AT SHEA STADIUM 1979 BBC BROADCAST VERSION”, in which the sound can be selected as the sound board in the 1979 version, has been released, but this time the sound is the sound board and the original while the image is the 1991 version. The point is broadcasting. The 1979 version of the audio is not just recorded, but the audio is remastered. As a result, the sound quality with a “vintage feeling”, which was good or bad in the broadcast version, was alleviated, and it became possible to enjoy it much more clearly.
Also, for the parts other than the performance scene being replaced with the sound board, the sound of the 1991 version is naturally utilized. However, perhaps reflecting the historical background of the time, an equalization with a strong bass was added as a whole, and this point was also corrected. By adding such processing, the main audio has been put together so that it can be viewed in a more natural state not only on the sound board but also on the part.
This release aims to edit each version of the shared video as if it were a good match. Not to mention the best version that allows you to enjoy shared performances as they are on the day without any overdubbing or replacement of performances, the drawbacks of the 1991 version, which boasts excellent image quality, are also firmly adjusted. On top of that, the convenience of being able to enjoy the original TV audio as well. It’s easy to hear and compare how the performance of the day was modified. A new definitive edition of the Beatles’ historic live footage called Shea Stadium is born!

ビートルズ栄光の瞬間を捉えた歴史的映像でありながら、未だにライブビデオとしてのリリースが実現しないシェア・スタジアム。「ANTHOLOGY」やジョンの「IMAGINE」で小出しにされ、数年前のライブヒストリー映画「EIGHT DAYS A WEEK」ではライブシーンだけを新たに編集したバージョンが本編終了後に流されたものの、映画と違ってソフトとしてのリリースは叶わず、特典映像としての収録すら叶いませんでした。
こうした状況の中でマニアの留飲を下げてくれたのがHMCの「SHEA!」ではないでしょうか。「ANTHOLOGY」用に1991年に映像と音声がリマスターされたバージョンを発掘してくれた名作で画質も音質も素晴らしく、現在に至るまでシェア映像の決定版に君臨しています。

とはいえ、まだ改善の余地があったのは明らかで、何といっても映像がビミョーに縦に伸びてしまっていたのです。ビートルズのライブ映像において、そうした画面比率の歪みが生じるとリンゴのドラムヘッドの円が真円でなくなるから解りやすい。そこで今回のリリースに当たっては画面比率を修正。当然リンゴのドラムキット全体が画面にフィーチャーされる「Act Naturally」の場面を見れば、彼のドラムヘッドはしっかりまんまるに映っていることを解ってもらえるかと。
もちろんそれだけでは芸がありません。今回のリリースに際してはライブシーンの音声をオーバーダビングや演奏録り直しテイクのない、オリジナルのサウンドボード録音へと差し替え。シェアの不思議なところは、当初から撮影の話がまとまっていた一方で、音声に関してはレコード会社と連携した録音などが提案されず、PAアウトのサウンドボードで済ませてしまったことが挙げられます。
マニアならこの手の音源の性質はよく存じておられるかと思われますが、その決断のせいでシェアの音声は多くの手が加えられることになってしまいました。おまけに録音の中にいくつもの問題を抱え、中でも「I Feel Fine」にリンゴの「Act～」そして「Help!」などは録音状態そのものに問題があり、そのままでは到底使えない状態であったからです。このせいでオーバーダビングはもとより演奏が一から録り直されるという事態にまで発展したのでした。
ところが手が加えられたことによってオリジナルのサウンドボードのリアルなドキュメント性が一気に高まる結果となったのは皮肉でした。おまけにビートルズの場面以外で顕著だったのは、前座の演奏中まで観客の歓声がオーバーダビングされていたこと。さすがにビートルズ登場以前でそこまで盛り上がっているはずもなく（笑）ここはサウンドボード音声の方がしっくりきます。それに何といってもリンゴの「Act Naturally」を始めとして、当日のリアルな演奏が聞けるサウンドボードに91年バージョンの映像が合わされば最強と呼べるのでは。

ところが今回はさらに念を入れ、副音声としてオリジナルのテレビ音声も収録。これはマニア間でおなじみとなった1979年BBC放送版の音声を元にしています。今までにも79年版で音声がサウンドボードに選択できるDVD「AT SHEA STADIUM 1979 BBC BROADCAST VERSION」がリリースされたことがありましたが、今回は映像が91年版でありながら、音声がサウンドボードとオリジナル放送というのがポイント。その79年版音声に関しても単に収録するだけでなく、音声をリマスター。これによって放送版にあった良くも悪くも「ビンテージ感」のある音質が緩和され、ずっとクリアーに楽しめるようになったのです。
また演奏シーンがサウンドボードに差し替えられた以外のパートに関しては、当然91年版の音声を活かしています。ところが当時の時代背景を反映してか、全体的に低音強めなイコライズが加えられており、この点に関しても修正。そうした処理を加えたことにより、メイン音声はサウンドボード以外もパートでもより自然な状態で鑑賞できるべくまとめられました。
このようにシェア映像各バージョンのいいとこどりをしたような編集を目指したのが今回のリリースなのです。各種オーバーダビングや演奏差し替えのない、シェアの演奏を当日ありのままで楽しめるベストバージョンというのは言うまでもなく、あの素晴らしい画質を誇る91年版の欠点もしっかりアジャスト。その上でオリジナルのテレビ用音声も併せて楽しめるという便利さ。これで当日の演奏がどのように手を加えられたのかを聞き比べるのも一目瞭然です。シェア・スタジアムというビートルズの歴史的ライブ映像の新たな決定版が誕生！
