先週末の音楽界の話題をかっさらってしまった感のあるビートルズの「ABBEY ROAD」。今回のリリースで新たなミックスのバージョンがリリースされた一方で、1969年オリジナルのステレオ・ミックスに関しては今年で十周年を迎えた、所謂09年リマスターが決定版とされてきました。実際に十年前のリマスターは待望という言葉がぴったりであり、リリース当初の盛り上がりをリアルに覚えておられる方も多いのでは。

こうして十年が経過した今、リマスターの出来にはアルバムによって若干のばらつきがあったように思えます。何と言ってもリリース当初から悪名高かったのが「A HARD DAY’S NIGHT」のタイトル曲。イントロが始まってから数秒間ほど音がこもるというマスタリング・ミスがそのままリリースされてしまい、十年が経過した今でも訂正されることなくリリースされ続けているというオフィシャルにあるまじき放置プレイ。もちろん全体的には見事な完成度の09年リマスターだったのですが、そうした粗がみられたのも事実かと。

アルバム「ABBEY ROAD」に関しては、元々がビートルズのアルバムの中でも飛び抜けて落ち着いた、まろやかな音質で録音された洗練された名作です。それ故に日本だけで独自にビートルズのCD第一号がリリースされたものの、あえなく回収となってしまったのは有名な話。一方09年リマスターではこのアルバム特有のまろやかさを尊重した仕上がりとなっていて、先週末リリースのオフィシャルにおいてポールとジョージの役割分担が確定したベースの存在感が特に際立つ仕上がりとなっていました。

それは裏を返せば低音が目立つあまりモコモコとした仕上がりだというきらいもあり、私自身は09年の丸びを帯びた仕上がりも好きですが、確かにオリジナルのUK盤LPや日本独自のプロユース盤、そして高音質LP入門編とも言うべきモービル盤それぞれで感じられた、あのアルバムの繊細な音の響きが09年から感じられなかったように思われます。それらのLPに近い繊細さをCDバージョンさで感じさせてくれたのは、意外にも先の回収国内盤だったかもしれません。

こうした状況の中で今週衝撃の限定プレスCDリリースが実現する新たな「ABBEY ROAD」、それは当時の日本においてオープンリールでリリースされていたバージョン。本アルバムに限らず、1960年代から70年代にかけて様々なロックのアルバムがオープンリール・テープというフォーマットでリリースされていたものです。個人的な話になりますが、私の親戚もレコードやカセットでなくオープンリールで様々なアルバムを所有しており、それを再生するデッキまでもちろん装備していました。つまり70年代にはオープンリールで再生するという行為がさして珍しいものではなかったということ。

そして驚くべきはその音質。先に挙げたLPなどと同様に「ABBEY ROAD」本来の繊細な音の響きを見事に捉えており、今回はこのCDのためにRevoxのオープンリールデッキを使用しミント・コンディションのリールから丁寧にデジタル化したものを元にプレスCDへと封じ込めました。もちろん余計なイコライズなど一切加えていないことを約束しますし、それは聞いていただければ一目瞭然。

そうなれば是非とも聞き比べていただきたいのですが、もう音の質感は09年リマスターとまるで違う。端的に言って09年より高音質。これを聞いてしまうと、09年リマスターがどうにもモコモコとした音質に聞こえてしまうのでは。今回のオープンリール・バージョンはそうした違和感が一切なく、それこそ一皮むけたような鮮度とクリアネスに驚かされることでしょう。例えばポールの「Maxwell’s Silver Hammer」などを例に挙げると、ジョージが弾くベースが09年リマスターですと迫力がある一方でブリブリと響きすぎたのに対し、こちらはずっと自然なバランスとクリアーな状態で聞けるというのが魅力的。更にはこのアルバム一番の聞き所である「Golden Slumbers」以降のメドレーも、LPでは内周にカッティングされてしまったことで当時の技術的にもどうしても歪みを避けるために低音域と音量を下げざるを得なかった問題がありましたが、オープンリールではそんなことはお構いなしに大迫力で聞かせてくれるのです。これは本当に是非オープンリール音源で体験いただきたい。

もちろん09年リマスターもアナログ感が生かされた仕上がりではありましたが、それを軽く上回る自然なアナログ感、さらにアルバムから本来感じられた音の繊細さと広がりも見事に封じ込められた新体験「ABBEY ROAD」。先週末のニュー・ミックスからオリジナルへと戻りたくなった時、CDで本来のアナログ感やクリアネスがたっぷり味わえる衝撃のオープンリール・バージョンを是非お試しください！
