こうした音源が残された背景には、キャンドルスティック・パークが最後のライブとなることを憂慮して、ポールがスタッフにライブの一部始終を録音することを命じたことが挙げられます。とはいっても当時はミキサーからのPAアウト録音など一般的でなく、放送目的でもない限りは録音が準備されることはありません。これが60年代後半であればサウンドボード録音で記録…となったのでしょうが、この時はそこまでの手配が実現しなかったのです。
代わりに録音はビートルズの広報を務め、ツアーに同行していたトニー・バーロウ（奇しくも今年亡くなられました、追悼）が当時まだ高価だったポータブルのカセット・テープ・レコーダーとマイクを使って録音を敢行しています。いわば「公認オーディエンス録音」と言うべき音源なのですが、これが驚くほど聴きやすい録音状態で残されることになりました。
ビートルズのスタジアム・ライブではアリーナ席が設けられず、安全上の問題からもスタジアムのグラウンドは警備とスタッフだけが往来する場となっていました。さらにキャンドルスティック・パークにおいてはステージの周りが金網で覆われるという、今では考えられないようなセッティング。そんなエリアを闊歩できるバーロウによって録音されたことで、あれほど聴きやすいバランスでビートルズ最後のライブが記録されたのです。

66年当時、ビートルズのライブをファンの絶叫に包まれる客席からクリアーな録音を残すことは至難の業。今でこそトロントやメンフィスといった、聴くに耐えうるクオリティでラスト・ツアーのオーディエンス録音が登場していますが、それらですら絶叫からは逃れられませんでした。その点キャンドルスティック・パークは客席よりもステージ上のアンプから発せられる出音に俄然近い場所から録音された、いわば公式のフロント・ロウ・レコーディングという別格の録音状況が成せる業だった。このオンな音像のバランス、今聴いても十分に素晴らしい。それでいて歓声のレベルが低く、ぱっと聴きだと当時のラジオ音源かと錯覚しそうになるほど。
ただし残念なことに、片面の収録時間が30分というカセットならではの弊害によって、この日の最終曲であり、ビートルズが公式における最後のライブ演奏曲となった「Long Tall Sally」が始まってすぐに録音が終わってしまいました。それ以降の演奏部分は地球上に存在しません。その為でしょうか、最初にキャンドルスティック・パーク音源を収録したLP（赤い枠のジャケのアレです…今でも中古でよく見かけますね）で「Long Tall～」はオミットされていました。その後ピンク色のピラミッド盤CDで「Long Tall～」まで収録され、以降はそれがスタンダードとなってゆきます。

とはいえバーロウによって残された音源は1966年の録音です。それをCD化するに当たってはDSP風なリバーブを加えて臨場感を演出するイコライズを施したもの、さらには「Long Tall～」の失われたエンディング部分を演出したものなどもありました。当店リリース「CANDLESTICK PARK 1966」に関しても、ポータブル・マイクで録音されたレンジの狭い音像を解消するようなイコライズ、さらに「Baby’s In Black」や「Long Tall～」で生じた細かい音切れを目立たなくする処理などが施されていたものです。
しかし今回リリースするに当たり、当店が新たに入手したバージョン、それを一言で表すのならば「ナチュラル」。マニアの間では最もナチュラルだと評価されていたピンクのピラミッド盤ですら、今回のバージョンの前では不自然に聴こえてしまう。ヒスノイズも含みつつ非常に柔らかな聴き心地は、これこそが1966年という時代ならではの荒々しくもビンテージな味わい。音を整えた優等生的な過去のキャンドルスティック・パーク・タイトルとは全く異質であり、正に骨董品という言葉が相応しい。

そしてメンバー全員が最後のライブとなることを踏まえ、ビートルズが一曲一曲を噛みしめるように演奏する様子までもつぶさに捉えられています。一般的に66年のビートルズ・ライブは演奏の意欲を失っているというのが定説であり、実際にこの日を最後としてライブ演奏を止めてしまう訳ですが、現在では65年までとはガラリと変わったスローなグルーブ感で演奏しているように受け止められています。つまり、単にやる気をなくしたというのではなく、前年までのようなポップな勢いではなく、ロックらしいルーズさをたたえ始めていたということ。そのライブサウンドの指向がドイツから武道館、そしてキャンドルスティック・パークへと進化していったのです。
後のルーフトップ・コンサートは別として、ビートルズ最後のライブ・ショーを驚きの生々しさで捉えた音源という歴史的価値はもちろん、今も昔も色褪せないラスト・ツアーのベスト・レコーディングを改めてナチュラルかつビンテージな質感で収録したのが今回のリリース。50年前の伝説のステージの空気感まで伝えてくれる鮮度とナチュラルさを限定のプレスCDの中に真空パックしました。ロックの歴史の中において重要な一日だと言っても過言ではない、ビートルズのラスト・ライブ・ショー。そのあまりに貴重なドキュメントを1966年らしいビンテージさと共に、心ゆくまでお楽しみください！
