そして本作である。Mクローデルが入手したものは、今だから書けることであるが、そのオークションでリール・テープの現物を落札した人から、さらにそれを高額で譲り受けた人からである。本人の弁によると、当初は世に出すつもりはなく個人の楽しみのつもりで購入したのだが、オークション出品前にこっそりコピーされたものからHMCで世に出たため、もう手放しても良いと思うようになったと述べている。そこでMクローデルにオファーが来たのであった。本作はバックアップなどのコピーからではなく、オークションに出品されたリール・テープそのものから新たに起こしたものなのである。インナーに掲載されている写真のリールが、その現物である。

そして実際に本物のリール・テープを聴いてみると、HMCのものより音質が良いのはもちろんのこと、より長く収録されていることが判明した。何せ40年前のリール・テープなので再生環境によって音質に差が出るのは当然である。その点、簡易的なバックアップからではなく、スタジオで現物のリール・テープから起こしたものの方が音質的に優れているのは理解できる。しかし収録が長いというのはどういうことだろうか。いまだにその原因は不明だが、いずれにせよ本作が最長収録であることは間違いない。そしてこれ以上の収録がないというのも、現物のリール・テープを入手したMクローデルだからこそ断言できる事実である。

ディスク1には当日の前座の様子を収録している。出演歌手それぞれに異なる司会者がついており、これが各々にとって一世一代の晴れ舞台であることが伺える。残念ながら聴衆はほぼ全員ビートルズが目的であったが、この人たちはこのような大観衆の前で演奏する機会など今までも、そしてこの後もなかったであろう。今となっては1965年当時のアメリカのショウビジネスの貴重な記録となっているのが興味深い。

【オーディオ・ディスク2】
そしてディスク2がビートルズのステージを収録している。前半は、先に紹介したように、オークションに出品されたリール・テープの現物そのものから新たに起こしてデジタル化したものが音源となっている。3本に分けて収録されたスコッチのリール・テープからアナログ・トランスファーを敢行。 HMCではその録音状態からカットされたと思われるショーのオープニングのアメリカ国家斉唱前のおよそ5分間のインターミッションのパートも含め、リール・テープの隅々まで余すところなく完全収録している。 素の音を聴いてみると、残念ながら40年前のリール・テープということで、経年変化によるマスターの疲労や、オリジナル収録時の機材の設定に因る録音レベルの昇降、リール毎のピッチの乱れなどが散見された。 それでなくともビートルズ自身によってボツになった音源である。今回そのような欠点を克服すべく、前述のニュー・トランスファーをプロ用スタジオに持ち込みテープの隅々までクリーン・アップ。 元々のマスターは、特にビートルズの出演パートのREEL#3に大きなピッチの狂いがあり、ノーマルな条件下での再生ではMCにおけるポールの声などに顕著にそれが現れていたが、 本作ではそれをプラスマイナスゼロに調整することから始まり、各トラックにおけるドロップ・アウトの補正、全体を覆う極端に強調された高音(音割れしている箇所もあり)と低音(利き過ぎてコモっていた)などのバランスを調整し、高額な費用と時間をかけてリマスタリングを行なった。その効果のほどは、これはもう、けして期待を裏切らないものとなっているので、ぜひ店頭で試聴していただきたい。

セットリストは1965年USツアーの定型で、ジョンの「Twist And Shout」から始まり、ポールの「She’s A Woman」に繋がる前年とは異なるのはもちろん、最新の映画主題歌「Help」などを含み、新旧織り交ぜた新しいものとなっている。当時の稚拙な機材と悪環境の中での録音、さらに大観衆の絶叫を前にしたスタジアムでの演奏と、けしてビートルズ自身ベストの状況下での演奏ではないが、あふれる熱気と熱狂、悪ノリ気味のパフォーマンスは、スタジオ盤や他のコンサート音源では聴くことのできない素晴らしいものである。従来のシェアスタジアム音源は、例えば「TWIST AND SHOUT」はジョンの“カモン、カモン”の箇所がダブルトラックで聴こえるなど、最も修整を意識させる曲で、アンソロジー映像版ではハリウッドボウルの演奏が被せられていた。当然、ここでは本当のオリジナル音声で収録している。「SHE’S A WOMAN」は映像では完全にカットされ、従来聴くことができなかった曲である。ジョージのグレッチのチューニングが甘く、これはカットされるわけだ・・・。 「I FEEL FINE」はジョンのマイクがオフミックスのため、映像版では完全に演奏が差し替えられていたが、ここでは本当のオリジナル音声による収録。「DIZZY MISS LIZZY」は演奏こそオリジナルなものの、ポールがベースをオーバーダブさせたものが使われていたが、もちろんここではベースのミックス前の録音である。 「TICKET TO RIDE」は従来当日の演奏にポールのベースをオーバーダブしたテイクが使用されたとされていたが、 今回オリジナル音声と聞き比べる限り完全に新しく録り直したテイクが使用されていたことが判明した。「EVERYBODY’S TRYING TO BE MY BABY」も映像版ではカットされいたが、『ANTHOLOGY 2』に音声のみ収録された。本作で聴くことの出来る同曲は、そのアンソロジーのミックスともやや異なる印象だが、逆にアンソロジー収録に際してビートルズ側がかなり音処理を施したというのがわかる。「CAN’T BUY ME LOVE」と「BABY’S IN BLACK」も後にポールがベースをオーバー・ダブする前の音である。「BABY’S IN BLACK」は音源研究家ダグ・サルピーの『910ガイド』で66年の再録音源としてリストアップされているが、 今回のオリジナル音源とシンクロして比較すると、ボーカルトラックと基本的なリズムトラックは一致する。つまりオリジナルを基本として、ポールのベーストラックと、会場で弾き損じていたジョージの間奏部分にオーバーダブを加えたものがフィルム音声に採用されたというのがわかる。そして「ACT NATURALLY」は、映像版では完全にスタジオ録音バージョンに歓声を被せただけのものだった。本作でこのオリジナル音声を聴いたときは、意外とリンゴが真面目に歌っていることに驚いたものだ。しかしながらやはりリンゴの歌唱には音程に不安定なところがあったり、ポールのコーラス・パートが完全にオフミックスでフィルムのサウンドトラックとしては不備があったことから、オリジナル音声の採用は見送られたと思われる。 ツアー中にも関わらずリンゴのレパートリーが途中から比較的歌いやすい「I WANNA BE YOUR MAN」に変更になったのもリンゴの音程が原因だろう。「A HARD DAY’S NIGHT」は映像版ではインタビューが被っていたものしか出回っていなかったが、ここではもちろん被っていない純粋な当日の演奏のみである。「HELP」も映像版ではジョージ・マーティンの要請で完全に別テイクに差し替えられたとされていたため、今までオリジナル音声は聴くことができなかった。 オリジナル音声と聴き比べると、２番歌詞の途中でレコーディング自体がオフラインになってしまうため、作品としては使い物にならなかったことが想像される。そして最後は「I’M DOWN」である。映像版では、この元々の音声にポールがベースをダビングし、さらに肝心のオルガンの音まで再録音が行なわれていた。見る者に強い印象を与えるあのジョンのオルガン・プレイは、実は再録音されたものだったというのが驚きである。映像版アンソロジーではオリジナルと修正版とを巧妙にミックスしたものが使用されていたが、もちろんここに収録されているのはオーバーダブ無しのオリジナル音声である。このように、BBCで放送された映像付随の音源と聴き比べると、実に違いが顕著で、もう別物と言ってもよい。これぞ当日の演奏そのまま、未加工の生の音なのである。

そして後半は、そのBBCで放送されたときの音声が収録されてる。本作の音源が出るまで、1965年シェア・スタジアム公演といえば、こちらの音源が収録されていた。そして前述のようにフェイクとまでは言い過ぎかもしれないが、当日の音や演奏とは程遠い様々な人為的な加工が施されている。逆に、こうして並べて聴くことで、どのような処理がなされているのか、その違いを楽しむのも一興であろう。もちろん歓声を被せたスタジオ録音がそのまま流用されていた「Act Naturally」も、SPANK盤などではカットされていたが、ここでは検証のため万全をきして収録している。

【オーディオ・ディスク3】
ディスク3は1965年シェア・スタジアムのステレオ音源を収録している。残念ながらリアル・ステレオは6曲のみしかないが、ディスク2の完全版と比べ、リアル・ステレオではこのように聴くことが出来る貴重な音源である。続いて収録されているのは、疑似ステレオにおける完全収録である。疑似ステレオとは言っても初期のビートルズのアルバムにあるような泣き別れではなく、かつ位相をずらしただけのヴォーカルが奥に引いた疑似ステでもない。音の広がりがあるまさにステレオ音源で、最新スタジオ技術を使ってミックスされたものである。おそらく今後はオリジナル・マスターによるシェア音源と言えば、こちらの疑似ステレオ・バージョンがスタンダードになるのではないか。

そして最後に1966年8月23日のシェア・スタジアム音源が収録されている。ご存知の通りこの年のシェア・スタジアム公演は音源がなく、今まで聴くことが出来なかった。もちろん本作でもわずかな断片でのみしか聴くことは出来ないが、音源と映像の両方でマテリアルに恵まれている1965年シェア・スタジアム公演に対し、あまりスポットの当たっていなかった1966年の同会場のコンサートも、同じくらい大人数の聴衆を集めた巨大規模のコンサートとして記憶されるべきであろう。本作では初登場音源として、コンサートが始まる前の観衆のざわめきから、ビートルズがステージに登場して行なうチューニング、ポールの挨拶、そして一曲目「Rock And Roll Music」の途中までをオーディエンス録音で初登場収録している。オーディエンス録音とはいえ音質はすこぶる素晴らしいもので、仮にこの音質で全編があれば大ニュースになるくらいのものである。短い収録なのは残念でならないが、この1966年シェアスタジアムの「Rock And Roll Music」は久しぶりに聴くことが出来るビートルズの初登場音源である。ジャケットには、その後に、やはり1966年シェア・スタジアム公演から5曲クレジットされているが、こちらはファンのインタビューがコンサート中に行なわれていたため、バックにビートルズの演奏も収録されている音源である。インタビューがメインとはいえ、はっきりビートルズの演奏も収録されており、こちらも貴重な1966年8月23日シェア・スタジアムの音源と言える。

【DVDディスク1】
続いて映像についてである。シェア・スタジアムの様子はエドサリバン側、NEMS側、そしてビートルズ側の3社によって12台のカメラで共同撮影され、48分間のカラーフィルムに編集された。 映画やコレクターズ・アイテムとして流通していたのは、その映像である。ビートルズの演奏はもちろん、会場設営の様子や熱狂するファン、 そして楽屋での様子などが収められたこの映像作品は、貴重なカラー映像で残されているビートルズのコンサートの中でも、日本公演と並んで最も有名なもののひとつである。

この映像に関しては今まで幾種類ものバージョンが流通し、数曲のみの映像を加えると、もう収集がつかない状態となっている。しかし本作に収録してある4バージョン＋RE-BUILTバージョンの、計5バージョンで、ほぼ全てのバージョンが網羅できる。映像を構成する要素として色味、輪郭の精度、画質、様々なものがあり、いずれも捨てがたい特長を持っているため、どれかひとつこれがあれば良いというものではない。それがシェア・スタジアムの映像の混乱に拍車をかけている。どれが良いかは実際にご覧になった貴方が判断すべきかもしれない。そしてその選択肢を提供しているのが本作である。

まずディスク1の前半は、1991年にリマスターされた映像が収録されている。冒頭に「I’m Down」を挟んでドキュメンタリーが収録されており、全10曲の収録となっているのは従来通りである。画質は素晴らしく、色味も自然で、最もスタンダードで優れた最新映像である。空の青さ、証明の鮮やかさ、色とりどりの聴衆の服など、ビデオ時代から知るマニアにとっては信じられないくらい、このまま公式リリースしても耐えうる素晴らしい高画質映像であると言える。

映像はアンソロジーに使用された元の編集マスター・フィルムからのトランスファーで、単一ソースとしてはベストのものである。ただし一旦VHSにリダクションされたものなので、部分的に見ればアンソロジーよりは劣る。後述のLPPバージョンも捨てがたいのはこのためである。なお、アンソロジーでは数カ所映像が差し替えられていたが、本作は「A Hard Day’s Night」でジョージがグレッチを使っているシーンがあるなど、当時の編集のままで収録している。

また音声は元の収録2トラックテープを使用しており、セパレーションは悪いものの疑似ではないステレオ録音。ただし曲によっては、翌年CTSスタジオで再録された演奏と差し替えられていたり、「Act Naturally」に至ってはボーカルのみをレコードのものから被せており、リンゴのボーカルがダブルトラックとなっているなど不自然な部分も多い。オークションに出品された6mmテープとはミックスが異なっており（「Dizzy Miss Lizzy」がジョンのギターが大きめなミックスである、など）、聞き比べてみるのも一興である。

後半はMクローデルから単体でもリリースされているLLPバージョンである。従来見ることの出来た映像は、当時撮影＆編集後、各テレビ局へ配給するために35ｍｍフィルムへブローアップされたもの、または、この35ｍｍフィルムから16ｍｍフィルムへコピーされたものが元となっていた。ところが、フィルムのコピーを重ねるにつれ、元の色合いやディティールが失われており、カラー映像とは言え、かなり退色が進んだものしか今まで流通していなかった。しかしここに収録の「LPPフィルム（ローフェード・ポジティブ・プリント）」は、35ｍｍフィルムのブロー・アップ版プリントを作成する際に土台となった、第2世代のフィルムにあたる。映画用フィルムは、ポジフィルム、特に「LLPフィルム」は高価なため、元々の撮影はより安価なネガフィルムが使われている。撮影＆編集したネガ像を、ポジフィルムであるLLPへ転写するため、ポジフィルムではあるがネガ像のままという状態で、それを更にネガフィルムに転写することにより、最終的なポジ像が得られる仕組みになっている。従って、この「LPPフィルム・バージョン」は、本来の画面は色が反転していたが、これをデジタル・テレシネし、さらに色を反転させることにより、本来の色彩を得ることができ、オリジナルに非常に近い鮮やかなものとなって甦えらせたものである。これまで完全盤としては、カラー映像とはいえ、コピーを経るうちに退色し、全体的にセピア色がかった、単調トーンに近い色味があまり感じられない画面でしか観賞することのできなかったこの歴史的作品を、オリジナルに近い素晴らしい画質で収録している。色味に関しては前半に収録の1991年リマスターと比べ輪郭にやや甘い部分は散見されるが、色彩はより濃淡がはっきりし、鮮やかなカラー映像としては双璧をなす仕上がりとなっている。

そして本作の特長は、この1991リマスター・バージョンと、LLPバージョンの2種の映像を、さらにそれぞれ2種の音源で切り替えることが出来る点である。オリジナルの音声と、リマスターされた音声がそれぞれに併録されており、2×2で合計4バージョンが収録されていることになる。

【DVDディスク2】
こちらのディスクには、アメリカとイギリスでそれぞれシェア・スタジアムとして放送されたバージョンを収録している。前半はアメリカABCバージョンで、放送前の流出映像らしく最初にカウントが入っている。そして冒頭に番組の司会者の挨拶があり、その後に本編に移行するという構成になっている。昔からフィルム上映会などで見ることが出来たのはこちらの映像である。ディスク1に収録の1991リマスターやLLPバージョンのように、美しく鮮明なカラー映像で見ることが出来る今となっては、このセピア色の映像にノスタルジー以上の感情を持ちえないかといえば、けしてそうではない。色彩という点では確かに劣るが、輪郭の精度、画像のきめ細かさという観点では、こちらの方が圧倒的に優れている。

後半はイギリスBBCバージョンである。依然としてややセピアがかってはいるものの、よりカラー映像らしく色彩はナチュラルかつクリアである。画像の輪郭の精度も高く、こちらもまた捨てがたい映像である。それぞれの良い部分を掛け合わせたような、バランスのとれた映像であると言える。

【DVDディスク3】
そして本作最後がこのディスク3に収録されているRE-BUILTバージョンである。今回新たに、通して最も視聴的に現在考えうる最強のシェア・スタジアムをという意図で制作されたものである。当時の編集の粗さを可能な限り修復し、映像と音を合わせて鑑賞しやすく再構築したものである。「I Feel Fine」や「Help」で顕著だった、映像と音のズレが解消されているのもポイント。他の曲で部分的に使用されていた「She’s A Woman」も冒頭少しだけだが再構築して収録されている（後半はN.M.E.の映像を使用したコラージュとして収録）。

1965 NEWS FILMは、本編の映像とは異なり、当時の報道用に撮影された別カメラによるシェア・スタジアムの映像である。警官が見守る中、スタッフに先導されて会場入りするビートルズのメンバー、グラウンドに入り込もうとする警官と熱狂的ファンとの攻防など、報道用に見栄えのする映像が収録されている。従来のシェア・スタジアムの映像しか知らないファンにとっては、このような映像も残されていたのかと驚くであろう。

そして最後は1966年シェア・スタジアムの映像である。アメリカにおけるビートルズの人気も1966年に入ると斜陽になってきたと伝えられるが、この1966年シェアの映像を見ると、それがただの伝説であり、依然として熱狂的なファンに囲まれて衰えぬビートルズ人気を見ることが出来る。ビートルズのメンバーも前年に大規模スタジアム公演を数多くこなしてきたからか、幾分余裕があるように見える。

最後に収録されているのが1966年シェア・スタジアム公演のカラー8mm映像である。最初の8mm映像は、おそらく当時のファンが客席から撮影したのであろう、遠目ながらステージ全体を俯瞰するショットで当時の様子が収録されている。続いて正面からの8mm映像である。日本公演でも着用されたストライプの入った白のスーツで揃えた衣装で歌っているのがわかる。3つ目の8mm映像は短く、また遠目なため記録以上の意味を見いだせないが、いずれ貴重なものとしてこちらに収録されている。そして最後の8mm映像は会場の外の様子や、開演前のまだ陽が出ている明るい中でのシェア・スタジアムの様子など、これまた今まで見ることが出来なかった貴重な当時の資料映像である。そして空が暗くなりコンサートが始まる。ビートルズ以外の前座の映像なども鮮やかなカラー映像で収録されているのに驚く。

【SHEA 1965&1966】
ビートルズのライヴ史上、その頂点とも言うべき熱狂のシェア・スタジアム公演を、前座はもとより本編までを完全収録。しかもオリジナル音声で収録しているのみならず、BBC放送バージョンも同時収録。さらにさらに、リアル・ステレオ・バージョンと疑似ステレオ・バージョンなども併録。また1966年シェア・スタジアムの初登場音源を含み、2年越しで行なわれた、これ以上ないシェア・スタジアム公演の音源の集大成となっている。

また映像は、1991年ニューリマスター、LLPバージョン、ABCバージョン、BBCバージョンと、それぞれに特長のあるバージョン違いを全て収録。それらの特長を全て備えたRE-BUILTバージョンを決定版として収録。1965年に関しては別カメラによるニュース映像なども収録している。さらに1966年のシェア・スタジアムに関しても、残存する貴重な当日の8mm映像やニュース映像などを収録している。

また全セットに1965年USツアーのパンフレットが付属している。ビートルズそれぞれの写真がふんだんに盛り込まれ、かなりページ数も多く、当時のパンフとしては画期的なものであろう。今回、ミント状態のオリジナルのパンフから復刻。これだけでも価値が高いものである。また見開き6面のインナーには、元の素材となったスコッチ・リール・テープの写真や、ツアー日程、使用楽器、解説、ポスターやチケット、そしてアナログ・ブートの写真などの資料を満載している。

もはや、これ以上のシェア・スタジアムは後にも先にも存在しえないだろう、そのような未来永劫の決定盤である。今まで数多くのシェア関連のアナログ、CD、ビデオ、DVD（コレクターズ・アイテムとしてはBlue-RayRでもリリースされているが、元がハイビジョン撮影ではないため、入れ物がBlue-Rayというだけで画質は変わらず、意味がない）などを収集してきたマニアにとっては、本作が最終到達点になるのではないか。手に持った時に、ずっしり重い充実したセットである。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。スリップケース付。
