全体を通しての激しい演奏は本当に圧倒的ですが、コンサート終盤において「I Want To Hold Your Hand」が演奏された場面だけは様子が違います。いつもの「ジャジャジャーン、ジャジャジャーン」ではなく「ジャジャジャンジャジャン、ジャジャジャンジャジャン」と弾かれた何とも荒っぽい始まり方で、数多い同曲のライブテイクのどれとも違うフレーズから始まるイントロが風変わり。とはいえ全米を制覇した曲です、その盛り上がりは本当に感動的。映像も演奏も本当に素晴らしい。

スウェーデンTV出演の三週間後にマンチェスターで熱狂するファンを前に演奏するビートルズの姿を捉えた映像は初期のカラー・ライブ映像としてこれもまた古くからの定番。元はパセ・ニュースが制作したもので、現在は同社のアカウントからYouTube上で公開されています。しかし日本の、なおかつリアルタイム・マニアの方などはブリティッシュ・ビートのアーティストを集めた映画「POP GEAR」の始めと終わりで登場したライブ映像という印象の方が強いかもしれません。さらに言うと当店リリース「COMPLEAT BEATLES」には「Twist And Shout」が皇室御前演奏を装った編集を施されて収録されています。
いずれにせよこの映像、映画特有なピッチの高さがどの収録バージョンにおいても一貫して見られました。それだけならまだしも映画「EIGHT DAYS A WEEK」に至っては、何と64年ハリウッド・ボウルの音を被せてしまうという恐怖のサイボーグ編集が施されてしまっていたのです。よって1963年純正の音声で見聞きできるというのはもちろんですが、何よりもマニアの手によって正確なピッチへとアジャストされている点が大きなポイント。

そして最後に収録されている映像はワシントンDCのアッパー版と並んで今回リリースの目玉となるもの。映像自体は「BEATLES ANTHOLOGY」以来おなじみとなった感がある63年モーカム・アンド・ワイズ・ショー。ここではビートルズの出演シーンをすべて網羅しているのはもちろん、格段のクオリティ・アップを遂げた文字通りのアッパー版で、何しろ画質がウルトラ・クリアーなのです。このまま「BEATLES ANTHOLOGY」や「EIGHT DAYS A WEEK」に収録できるのではと？思えるほどに驚異的な鮮明さ。これまでにもビートルズの出演シーンは出回っていたものの、基本的にタイムコードが入った状態となっていました。その後タイムコードを消去したバージョンなども存在していたものの、今回はタイムコードなしはもちろん、根本的に画質の次元がまったく違う。
既にイギリスでは人気が爆発していたビートルズでも、この時期は今で言うところのバラエティ番組に出演していたという貴重な記録。そこでお笑いコンビ、モーカム・アンド・ワイズの二人との絡みを披露したことは「BEATLES ANTHOLOGY」でよく知られるところとなりましたが、ここでのビートルズはそれ以外に当時の最新アルバムとリリースされたてのシングルから両面の収録曲を披露。絶叫するファンを前にした演奏ではないので、どれも非常に丁寧かつ端正に演奏されているのが魅力ですが、中でも「I Want To Hold Your Hand」の最初期ライブ・バージョンがこれだけ鮮明な画質で観られるという価値はあまりにも高い。そしてワシントンDCの時と見比べると、これがまた何とも面白い。
結果として1963年後半から64年初頭までのビートルズ・ライブ映像をまとめた内容へとまとまっていますが、すべて口パクでない純生ライブで収録されており、おまけにどれも演奏内容が非常に充実している。それ以上に「EIGHT DAYS A WEEK」の元ネタ映像集的な内容にまとまっている点が同映画で各ライブ映像を知られた方に大変重宝することでしょう。いかに手を加えられていたのかが解るはず。そのような事実関係を抜きにしても、ワシントンDCを始めとした初期のビートルズならではのエネルギッシュなライブ・パフォーマンスを詰め込んだ見やすさ抜群の内容。それだけでなく彼らのマニアはもちろん、すべてのロックファンに楽しんでもらいたいライブ映像集。この時期のビートルズのライブは激アツ！
