そんなモスクワ・ライヴもまた、日本盤LDは格別な品質となっていました。この映像を御覧になった事がある方なら分かると思いますが、このライヴのライティングは恐らく意図的に” 赤色 “が基調になっています。勿論それは共産社会主義国のイメージ・カラーの為と思われるのですが、実は日本盤LDはこの赤色の発色が大変鮮やかなのです。これは当時同時リリースされたVHSのビデオテープ版を観てみると顕著ですが、ビデオ版は磁気テープの特性からか赤色がもっと滲んでおり、色差信号の解像度の低さによって映るもの全て(※ 特に光源や人物の輪郭)に鋭さが欠けているのです。一方水平解像度400本以上を誇るLD版は映るもの全ての色調がキリッとシャープで、物の形と質感がグッと掴み易い映像となっている為、記録メディアによる情報量・水平解像度の違いがハッキリ判るのです。リリース当時(※ 日本での発売日は1991年3月31日でした)は明らかに継ぎ足した拍手、恐らくホームビデオで撮ったと思われる客画シーンの異質さ(※ そしてその客画は同じシーンが何度か使い廻されている)などマイナス面ばかりが指摘されたものですが、しかしLD版はその編集の稚拙さでさえ愛おしくなるほど鮮明な画質・音声で、このライヴのドキュメンタリー性を現在に伝えてくれるのです。

これを今回同時リリースの『ライヴ1990』同様に、26年間完全未開封M+の日本盤LDから初回再生したものを最新機材でデジタル・トランスファーしたものが本作となっている訳ですが、その映像の美しさときたら目を疑うばかりの眩しさなのです。先述した赤色の成分も盤の再生傷が無い分だけノイズ成分が限りなくゼロに近く、音声もド迫力ステレオそのものとなっており、恐らく現時点でこれ以上は望めないクオリティとなっているのです。例えば「Sole Survivor」ではウエットンの伸び上がる声が磁気テープ版以上に中音域に芯の入った音で入っており、画質だけでなく音像でもその違い・記録メディアのアドヴァンテージ差が顕著に出ています。曲中間のブリッジではパットがタッピングを入れていたり、終盤でも原曲のイメージを壊さずに素晴らしいハードタッチで音を彩って音楽をグイグイと引き上げてゆく様子が観て取れますが、これも文句など微塵も付け様のない素晴らしい映像美で流れるのです。ダウンズのソロパート、いわゆるボレロのシーンとしての「Cutting In Fine」はウエットンが地元メディアのインタビューを受ける様子やリハーサルの様子、ロシア軍兵士も動員してのセット設営の様子がドキュメンタリー的に挿入されていますが、このセット組み上げの様子ひとつ取っても鉄骨フレーム一本一本まで確認出来る解像度を誇っているのです。この同シーンはビデオ版ではもっと粗くぼんやりとした映像で再生され、LDがいかに多くの情報量を持っていたかがよく分かるシーンでもあります。「Days Like Th
ese」では赤から青へ、ここに来て初めてステージ全体に青く強いスポットライトが当たりますが、この大胆な色彩変化もビデオ版を超える見事な発色です。一方「Rendezvous 6:02」で暗闇にピン・スポットが当たりつつ歌うウエットンの肌艶の発色、淡いライティングの再現度も抜群ですし、「The Heat Goes On」でドラムをタフに叩くカールがこちらにウインクする例のシーンも、史上最高の画質で登場します。曲のブリッジではショルダー・キーボードを持ってダウンズがフロントに出てフロントの3人が熱演を展開しますが、当時ならではのこのフォーメーションがこれほど極上の映像美で残されている事にも改めて感動を覚えるに違いありません。

バンドはこの後、1991年4月初旬に南米ツアーを行った後にまずカールが脱退し、継いでパットとウエットンが7月頃に去ってあっけなく夢潰えるのは御存知の通りです。(※ ちなみに日本でウエットン脱退のニュースが初めて流れたのは、恐らく91年9月12日放送のFMサウンドマーケット番組内だったと思います)。そう考えると91年3月31日にリリースされたこのモスクワ・ライヴは、ウエットン在籍時の89年~90年エイジアが残した最後の置き土産だったと言えるでしょう。


ファンとしてはそんなコメントを期待してしまいますが、もしかするとウエットンにとっての音楽的継続とは仕事をしている自分そのものなのであって、特定のバンドではなかったのかもしれません。振り返れば僅か2年間弱ではあったものの、その間にはベルリンの壁崩壊、そしてソ連解体直前のペレストロイカとグラスノスチに揺れる歴史の大きな大きな転換点があり、その中でエイジアは再生して新しい航路を求め・もがいていた訳で、それを鑑みてこのライヴ映像に映るウエットンを観ると、何と活き活きとそれに挑戦している事かと改めて胸打たれる方も多い筈です。本作の狙いはまさにそこで、決してウエットンが世を去ったからではなく、そのキャリアの集大成とも言えるエイジアで彼が果敢に再挑戦していた姿だからこそ未開封の日本盤LDを26年振りに開け、最新機材でトランスファーしたプレス盤DVDなのです。これほど重要なタイトルが廃盤になって久しく、再発売も見込めないなどあってはならない事です。是非この週末は永久保存に相応しい本作DVD、及び同時発売の『ANDROMEDA: ASIA’S GREATEST HITS LIVE: Laser Disc Edition』も一緒に手に取り、挑戦していた熱きウエットンに再会して戴ければと思います!!

そのサウンドで描かれる末期のショウは、場数を踏んで進化したASIAの姿を克明に映しだしている。「Don’t Cry」「Voice Of America」「Time Again」「Prayin’ 4 A Miracle」
「Days Like These」「Open Your Eyes」の6曲がカットされた不完全収録ではあるものの、そのアンサンブルのこなれ方は十分に分かる。フラッシーなパットのギターも、持ち味を殺さないまま楽曲に馴染み、ウェットン/ダウンズとの呼吸感もばっちり。このまま新作発表→全米ツアーと進んでくれたら良かったのに……そんな27年前の事が今さらのように悔やまれてしまう充実の演奏なのです。

オリジナル編成ではないものの、“ウェットンが歌うASIA”を日本に届け、『ANDROMEDA』『LIVE MOCKBA 09-X1-90』という素晴らしい映像作品も残してくれた再始動期。その進化の終着点を教えてくれる特級サウンドの1枚です。オフィシャル映像の史上最高峰クオリティ版である本編プレスDVDと併せ、存分にお楽しみください。
