さて、本盤で使われている音源ですが、今回は新たに発掘された、既発の「GEOFFLY’S BIRTHDAY PIRTY」とは完全別マスターの新ソースを使用しています。音質は、比較にならない程にアップグレードしており、まるでライン録音のようなクリアーなサウンドに、「こんなもの何処にあったの？？」と、マニアは驚愕の思いで聴き入ってしまうこと間違いありません。今回の新音源はOpen Your Eyesはノンカットで収録されており、初めてこの日の同曲を完全版で聴くことができます。欠点はイントロ部分からWildest Dreamsの1分30秒冒頭が欠落していることですが、その部分は既発「GEOFFLY’S BIRTHDAY PIRTY」より違和感無くつないであり、完全収録しています。専門サイトでも「今後、幾つかの83年音源がリリースされても、恐らくこれ以上の興奮が収録されているかどうかは疑問でしょう。」と、この日の異常なほどのハイテンションな演奏を絶賛していますが、それを、ツアー屈指の最高音質盤で聴けるのです！！これを聴いたら既発はもう聴けません。音質に関しては、それ程の差があり、3ランクアップと言っても過言ではありません。音の鮮度が抜群ですので、高域の突き抜け方も半端なく、音のふくよかさ、自然な広がり、分離感、全てが最高グレード。ここまで気持ちく聴ける1983年音源がかつてあったでしょうか？前述の通り演奏内容も抜群！バンドの切れの良いパワフルなアンサンブルも最高ですが、ウェットンの絶好調ボーカルがとにかく凄まじく、その音質同様に、ファンは感動間違いありません。楽音も驚く程に近く、音質も、ショウが進むにつれて、まるでサウンドボード録音のように変貌していきます。力強いEye To Eyeの絶品の演奏ぶりは全てのファン必聴でしょう。Only Time Will Tellは、全ての楽音があまりに魅力的に「鳴る」ので、パートパートでいちいち感動してしまいます。この位置で聴ける、この時期ならではのアレンジで聴かせるキーボードソロセクションも非常に新鮮。美しく太い音色で聴かせるムーグの響きは絶品で、華やかなキーボードワールドに浸れます。（後半、フットルースのメロが登場します。）普通、キーボードソロは退屈なものが多いのですが、この意外な魅力に満ちた6分間は非常に楽しめ、実際、観客からも大喝采を受けています。ウェットンの「ステージ別サイドにいる友達、世界最高のギタリスト、スティーヴ・ハウ！」の紹介に、これから起こる悲劇的離別を考えると複雑な気持ちになりますが、ハウの演奏も絶品で、当たり前ですが、あれだけ凄い演奏を続けてきたイエスの解散から、まだ3年しかたっていないことを実感させられます。この日の初の完全収録版となるOpen Your Eyesの絶品の演奏は全てのファンを感動させてくれます。まさにドラマチック・ロックの権化！バンドの歴史上、この日が頂点であったかの好演が楽しめます。音質も最高！ディスク2冒頭3曲は本盤最高の聴き所です。「シングルBサイドの曲」として紹介される Daylightのドラマチックで切れ味鋭い演奏は最高。2部構成でプレイされるThe Smile Has Left Your Eyes（力強いドラムサウンドに感動！）は、ウェットンの涙腺を刺激するボーカルは最高で、この時期のみの独特のバンドアンサンブルは必聴です。この時期のDon’t Cryをここまで良い音で聴けるのは本当にありがたい事です。ウェットンは本当に冗談みたいに声が良く出ています。Here Comes The Feeling、Sole Survivor での凄まじいばかりのバンドアンサンブルも強烈。それぞれがエイジア史上のベスト・ライブトラックと思えるほどです。アンコール前には、前述の通り、ウェットンの音頭でジェフへのバースデイソングがウェットンの音頭で歌われます。（この辺りもクリアーに収録されており、必聴）Heat Of The Momentも独特の疾走感を感じさせながら、非常に整合感を感じさせるベストな演奏が聴けます。後半のハウのロングソロも縦横無尽に弾きまくり、ラストをダイナミックに締めます。ここの部分は本当にロックしており、聴き応え満点のです。ラストの熱心のファン一群の「エイジア・コール」も感動的。

この後のウェットンはエイジア脱退という悲劇的事件が待っています。1983年12月のグレッグ・レイク入りエイジアも、あれはあれで良かった（と思いたい）のですが、このオリジナル4人のまま、日本ツアーをやってくれたらと思うと本当に残念でなりません。こんな凄いライブが日本で行われたら、プレグレッシヴ・ロックが再び評価され、ファン・メディア間でも再燃したかもしれないかも、等と思わず空想してしまうほどの、それくらい説得力あるライブです。日本では70年代前半期にサバス(with Ozzy)、ジェネシス(with Gabriel)、クリムゾン（with Wetton)のライブが行われなかったのが常々、残念に感じていますが、これと同じで、1983年にウェットン入りエイジアで是非来日して欲しかったものです。いずれにせよ、1983年夏のエイジアがここまで、神懸かった演奏をしていたかが、判る1枚と言えるでしょう。全ての意味で「格が違う」1枚。1983年「アルファ」ツアーのベスト・ブートレッグは間違いなく本盤。限定プレスCDにて好評Virtuosoよりリリース決定です。

ジェフリー・ダウンズの誕生日を、観客とバンドメンバーがバースデー・ソングを歌って祝福するシーンがあることで有名な既発盤『GEOFFLY’S BIRTHDAY PIRTY / (No Label)』。長きに渡り83年エイジア屈指のレア音源として君臨したタイトルだったが、本作はこれに代わって登場した素晴らしい上位音源である。今回新たに見つかった新発掘マスターから収録されているのが最大のポイントで、既発盤では楽曲の大半が無残にカットされていた「Open Your Eyes」と、曲後半がフェイド・アウトしていた「Heat Of The Moment」の両曲がノーカットで収録されている点は非常に大きい。音質も大幅に向上しており、Disc-1の中盤以降は既発盤より格段に音が良くなってきて、Disc-2では殆どサウンドボート級の優れた音質で収録されている点は特筆に値するだろう。
音質だけでなく、演奏面も聴き処が多いのも特徴だ。例えば「Time Again」はギターがミュートカッティングをしていたりトレモロを多めに入れていたりと、その装飾音がいちいち効いていて面白い。 ウエットンも歌詞2番の最後の部分を「…all alo～～～、～～ng♪」と、メロディラインをグイグイ押し込む若々しい歌唱が胸を打つ。「The Heat Goes On」ではメインフレーズに入る直前でギターがスライドしているニクい演出も聴き処だし、ウエットンが歌詞3番を適当にデッチあげている様子にも注目したい。また「Eye To Eye」でも各歌詞の最後(“to go～♪”、”on thin ice～♪”、”no more time～♪”等)をにひねり上げて歌う様子が他日より際立っており、この辺りのスポンテニアスな表情の付け方も大きな聴き処になっている。
そして何といっても「Open Your Eyes」。 既発盤では無残にカットされていた冒頭～中盤の約4分間がここでは完璧な姿で存在している。しかもこれが想像していた通りの素晴らしい名演で、冒頭のシンセとボーカルの静かな導入から力強いアンサンブルへ引き継がれる様子は大変強いインパクトを放っている。 収録音が秀逸な為に一音一音が鮮烈に聴こえるのも特徴で、レガートの効いた流れの中を芯の太い音が潜り抜けてゆく様子は絶品である。セットリストに加わって間もない「Daylight」は2分14秒付近から始まってゆくギターとキーボードの対話、そして音のバトンタッチのスムーズさに83年らしさを感じる筈。終曲部ではウエットンが音程を意図的に一定に保ったまま最後の歌詞を歌っているのも印象的だ。更に「Don’t Cry」では相変わらず1番と2番を混同させた適当な歌詞をワメき散らしているウエットンが確認出来るのだが、これまた色んな意味で魅力的である。
そしてこの公演を特別なものにしているのがディスク2-繆。”Happy Birthday, To Geoffrey～♪”とウェットンが歌い、他のメンバーやオーディエンスからも祝福されている様子が収録されている微笑ましいシーンだ。但し残念ながら00分20秒付近でカットの痕跡があり、本来ならウエットンが「～～、It’s, Geoffrey Downes Birthday!!!」と叫んでいる重要なシーンがカットされている。既発盤ではこの部分がノーカットで聴けるだけに残念ではあるが、補填は既発盤から極僅か移植すれば済む筈なのでここはいつかアップグレード完全版が出るのを待ちたいところだ。しかしラストの「Heat Of The Moment」は一転して本作の実力が大爆発しており、一音一音の鮮明さと近くてラウドに鳴り響くパンチある収録音には驚かされるだろう。また既発盤ではこの「Heat Of The Moment」がフェイド・アウトしてディスクが終わっていたが、本作ではノーカットで最後まで聴けるうえ終演後も録音が暫く廻り続けて会場の余韻まで克明にレコードされているのも特筆されると思う。久し振りにアップグレード・タイトルならではの並々ならぬ興奮が詰まった一枚。初めて聴く人や新しいファンには衝撃のレア音源だろうし、既発盤を知っている往年のファンには更なる驚きと感動が詰まった好タイトルである。2CDプレス盤。
