プログレッシヴ・ロックの巨人、ジョン・ウエットンが世を去ってまもなく3週間が過ぎようとしていますが、彼の多彩なキャリアを振り返る時、特に眩い輝きを放っているのはやはりキング・クリムゾンとエイジアに尽きると思います。特にエイジアはスーパー・グループならではのマネージメントからの軋轢、自身の解雇→復帰劇など諸問題はあったものの、バンドや楽曲への愛着はひとしおだった様に思います。そんなウエットン在籍時のエイジアで特別な輝きを放っていたのがこのスタジオ・ライヴ収録時の” THEN & NOW “時代でしょう。ギターにパット・スロールを迎え、サウンドをよりアメリカ風の情熱的で華麗なハードタッチなものにして再起に賭けていた時期ですが、御存知の通りこのサウンドはウエットンが目指したエイジア・サウンドの理想形でもありました。これはスティーヴ・ハウ以外のエイジア専任ギタリストが全員HR/HM系の人選だった事からも読み取れますし、中でもエイジアの曲を一番自分の物にして米国のマーケットも充分に狙う事が出来たパット在籍時のエイジア・サウンドは、その究極型でもあったと思います。

このスタジオライヴは英国のセントラル・インディペンデント・テレビジョン用に撮影されたもので、キャパ400人のスタジオを満員にしたエイジア1990年第2回目のライヴでした。2月21日のビデオ発売に先駆け、英国では1月10日の深夜3時から前述の放送局でオンエアされていますが、この時は「Wildest Dreams」と「Go」がカットされており、ビデオを買う事によって初めてこの日の演奏が全曲観られるという放送内容でした。この時のエイジアの演奏は殆んどの曲が従来よりテンポアップが図られてアンサンブルのスリリングさが増し、スタジオ・ライヴという事もあって通常のホールやスタジアム・コンサート以上に音楽的な本質が間近で剥き出しになっており、どこを切っても新しいエイジア・サウンドが直球でズバズバと伝わってくるものでした。ダウンズのキーボード類も来日公演時より随分と多いのも注目ですし、ショウ構成やステージングもこの6月の映像から9月の来日までの3ヶ月間で彼らがどれだけのリハーサルと改良を重ねて日本のファンの期待と悲願(＝ ウエットンがフロントに居るエイジアとしての上陸)に備えていたかが実に良く分かる映像でもあります。更に言えば、ここで観られる水色のジーンズに白いシャツと黒のベスト(そして銀色の腕時計)という着こなしは当時のウエットンの定番で、90年来日公演時も連日これと同じ姿でステージに立っていた事を懐かしく想い出される方も多いのではないでしょうか。

ただ残念ながら当時の来日公演は映像作品としては残されず、来日記念の実況録音盤も出ませんでした。それだけにこの映像は当時のエイジアやウエットンを顧みる意味でも大変重要なライヴ映像となっている訳ですが、残念ながら国内盤DVD（こちらは全曲収録）は廃盤になって久しく、この先も恐らく再発は見込めそうもありません。因みにこの映像は海外では何度かDVD化されましたが、それらは何故かLDより画質・音声が劣るビデオテープ版をマスター使用していたり、当時英国で深夜放送された編集版(※ 先述した通り「Wildest Dreams」と「Go」が未収録となっているもの)を採用していたりと、この時のスタジオ・ライヴを純粋にフルセットで、しかも高画質で愉しむ事がなかなか難しくなっているのです。そこで登場するのが今なお世界中のコレクターから注目される高品質な日本盤レーザーディスクからの復刻となる訳ですが、今回当店は完全未開封の日本初回盤LDを26年振りに開封し、その初回再生映像をDVDにトランスファーしてこの重要な映像作品を現代に甦らせました。その深く端整な映像美は当然ながらビデオ版の比ではなく、メディアが持つ根本的な解像度の格差を冒頭からハッキリと感じ取る事が出来るのです。音声も公式既発海外盤DVDより抜けが良く透明度も高いため、例えば「Wildest Dreams」で入る非常にシャープなギターのカッティングやボリューム奏法でのアクセント、また「Sole Survivor」で派手にアーミングしたり速弾きしたり、果てはチョーキングして泣かせまくる等の、それまでのエイジアには無かった表現変化がますます掴み易くなっているうえ、ウエットンが歌い終わりの時に顔を左右に振って声の遠近感・奥行きを出すシーンも、LDで観て聴いてこその振幅感を伴っています。「Don’t Cry」で原曲に無いリズム・アクセントを入れる様子も音像にキレの良さがあり、それら曲の中の新しい軸が極上の映像美から見えてくる点もこの日本盤LDの極みですし、いよいよ始まる「Time Again」で体感出来るハードなエイジア・サウンドの究極形もまた感動的です。主題呈示が終ってから炸裂するグラマラスなビート感は当時の演奏ならではで、一新されたリズムと旋律の新しい融合感を是非この未開封LD初回再生の映像美で御堪能戴きたいと思います。

「The Smile Has Left Your Eyes」ではウエットンがアコースティック・ギターに持ち替え、今度はパットがベースを弾くという例のシーンも決定的な高画質で出てきますが、御存知の通りこの曲は9月24日の日本公演から82年ヨーロッパ・ツアー当時の(＝本来の原曲・原案通りの)2部構成に戻されて演奏される為、ここで鑑賞出来るスタジオ8でのライブはアコースティック単体でこの曲が演奏されたこの時期最後の姿という事になり、その意味でも貴重です。「Only Time Will Tell」ではダウンズのキーボード・システムが上方から暫く視認出来るシーンが序盤に含まれていますが、3ヵ月後の日本公演とは違うこの配置が確認出来るのも見どころのひとつでしょう。演奏も観客に手拍子を誘うスタイル＝近年まで続いた距離の近いあのアプローチの原初の様子となっており、これも麗しい映像で息衝いているのです。「Days Like These」で注目したいのはパットがしっかりコーラスに参加している点です。ウエットンがエイジアのギターに求めたのは「演奏に華があり、且つ、きちんと歌えること」だったのは有名ですが、それが曲中の様々なシーンでビデオ版以上に良い音で確認出来る点も要チェックでしょう。「The Heat Goes On」ではマイクの音を100％吸い込んだウエットンの歌声が真っ直ぐ飛び出し、スピーディな曲に合わせて変動する激しいライティングも光源ひとつひとつが実にシャープです。中盤のドラム・ソロでもドラムキットに反射するライティングが滲み・退色ゼロの鋭い輝きで出ていて、音声もベースの動きがばっちり追える・聴こえるのも嬉しいところです。「Go」はライティングによる浮き上がりが大変鮮明で、各楽器に反射する輝きの美しさ、人物の背後や頭上から漏れ動くスポットライト等、淡い色も強い色も極上の解像度で御愉しみ戴けます。「Heat Of The Moment」では頭上から4つのスポットライトがパットに当たる様子が感動的なほど綺麗な発色で出ており、途中でショルダー・キーボードを下げてダウンズがフロントに出てくるところも、そのフォーメーション変化のドキュメンタリー性が日本盤LDならではの映像美で眩しく現れます。「Open Your Eyes」もハードタッチで描き直された曲が史上最高の音像と美麗映像で浮き上がり、カールがマッシヴに叩き上げる姿も最強の映像美で出てきます。終曲部で切れの良いキーボードの和音に彩られながらバシッと終曲するあの切なくて熱い炸裂感たるや、まさに「見よ、大いなるエイジアを」そのものです。

それにしてもこの鋭くて眩い映像美と、透き通って密度の濃いサウンドには唸らされるばかり。今更ながら日本盤レーザーディスクの質の高さには本当に唸らされますし、さすが盤面に再生傷一つ無い26年間未開封の初回再生映像だと納得させられます。原題” ANDROMEDA “とはよく付けたもので、このスペックと最新機材で2017年に甦ったこの映像こそ、まさに星屑の煌きの中に吸い込まれるエイジア・サウンドをオリジナルのまま伝える最強の映像詩であり、この先も時空を超えて心揺るがせるプレス盤DVDだと確信出来るでしょう。今週末は本作を手に、改めて当時のエイジアとウエットンが目指したエイジア・サウンドに想いを馳せてみては如何でしょうか。ハードで情熱的なギター・サウンドは事実上のラストアルバムとなった『GRAVITAS』でも顕著でしたし、ファイナル・ギタリストとして選ばれたサムもまたそういうタイプのプレイヤーでした。でも最新機材で現代に甦った本作を観れば、彼が思い描いたエイジア・サウンドの理想形は1990年の大いなるエイジアが本格的な” ALPHA (＝始まり) “であり、そしてあの時点で既に” OMEGA (＝到達点) “だったと気付かされるでしょう。そんな1990年エイジアだけが放つ事が出来た重く硬質で色彩豊かな音の夢を、今一度この最新作でお確かめ下さい!

本作が録音されたのは「1995年10月12日ケベック公演」。1991年夏に再びASIAを脱退したウェットンはソロ活動を開始。名作『VOICE MAIL』や日本公演のライヴアルバム『CHASING THE DRAGON』を発表、さらにスティーヴ・ハケットの『GENESIS REVISITED』などに参加し、90年代前半をすごしました。そんな活動の一環として行われたのが、アンプラグドのミニツアー。1995年10月５日から14日にかけ、アコースティックギターを片手に単身、北米を回っていたのです。本作のケベック公演は、その一幕なのです。
そんな本作は、実に暖かみのあるオーディエンス・サウンド。恐らく現場はホテルのバーだと思われるのですが、とにかく親密感が素晴らしい。ギター１本が透明感たっぷりに響き、ウェットンの美声がしっとりと降り注ぐ。文字通り「同じ部屋にいる」感が溢れ出すサウンドなのです。そのサウンドで描かれるショウは、彼のキャリアを総括する名曲・美メロディの宝庫。ASIAやソロは装飾が取り除かれ、KING CRIMSONやU.K.はアンサンブルに頼らずに、メロディと歌声の美しさだけが丸裸になって光り輝く。
当時ならではの「You’re Not The Only One」や、アコースティックバージョンの「Only Time To Tell」「Don’t Cry」も素晴らしいですが、特に感動的なのはKING CRIMSON。このツアーにはオフィシャル盤『AKUSTIKA – LIVE IN AMERIK』もありますが、そこでは聴けない「Easy Money」「Starless」「Lament」「Exiles」がたっぷりと演奏されるのです。オリジナルでは緊張感溢れるインプロヴィゼーションの緩衝材として機能していたメロディが本来持っていた“美”。それだけに焦点を絞りきり、最大限に引き出されているのです。
